Porn Ethics

Dunno why, but I started thinking about porn ethics today and thought this would be an interesting topic for this forum, since it could be approached from so many directions.

Certainly there's been discussion about how "rough" is acceptable - many her express dislike for the Max Hardcore "treat 'em like vile whores" school of interaction between the male & female performers.

Then there's the question of consensual vs non-consensual interaction - there's a number of sites out there that purport to be sneaky pics at beaches, etc, whether they are or not.

But I was most interested in the ethical decisions that we porn users have available to us. With the internet what it is, there are a lot of forums that post links to get material from just about any kind of site that you want. Especially in the land of bit-torrents, there are "full site rips" available without too much searching, but even if you're too low-tech or lazy, like me, to get into the bit-torrent world, there are site rips available - and other forums that purport to have usernames & passwords available for many sites for free. There are a lot of people posting in those forums that take the position that you'd have to be a moron to pay for porn.

So why do it? Why pay for porn? Why join sites in ways that involve credit card transactions instead of just joining forums that brag about having all of that material for free?

Personally, I don't claim to be "pure" in my decisions in this area any more than I am in most areas of my life. I'll drive over the speed limit if I feel like it and feel no qualms. I obey traffic laws more strictly if I feel that I'm going to pay a price for not doing so - but on an ordinary basis I drive carefully because I don't want any injuries to befall me and I don't want to injure anybody else - not just because of the expense, but because I'd feel like shit if I did injure somebody else by my negligence.

In terms of these forums that are all over the place, I check them out and I'm not above downloading stuff that I want to see, but I also join the sites that I find consistently exciting - because if people are doing a site that's going to be consistently exciting to me, as far as I'm concerned, they deserve to be paid for it. There's a matter of self-interest in wanting them to survive and prosper so that they keep going and keep on presenting the exciting material - and understanding that they need money to do so - and there's an ethical factor that, to me, if someone's doing consistently exciting work, I don't want to rip them off. I want to pay them for what they're doing.

I don't feel bad about using these forums to check out material and see what the quality is like, but I don't want to feel that I'm ripping off the sites that are great, from my perspective - and I'd feel like more of a moron for taking their stuff for free than I do by paying them.

On the other hand, I'll also do what I can to find the best prices available, including prices lower than the currently advertised prices. Google is a great tool to just put sites' names in and see what comes up and see what prices are being advertised with what comes up - sometimes you can find prices $5 or more off the currently advertised price or the best price available through TBP or other such sites - just because old links sometimes still work fine - and I've got no ethical problem paying the lowest price that I can find to join.

Anyway, that's my long-winded rant to start off this topic. I'll be interested to see if others have any thoughts on this, including from some of the webmasters that post around here every once in a while.

I can get anything I want for free, but I like to be in a site. It's easier, and I like being a member of a good well organized site.

But I have nothing against collector to collector sharing.

I have two main reasons and people will be surprised by this, but I honestly don't have a long explanation.

The first reason is simply that I do not have the time to acquire free porn - it is often tedious work and can be dangerous to the health of your computer in the form of frustrating viruses. There are a few forum sites that make it relatively easy, but if you don't pay for the "premium" service provided by whatever download server they are using, you end up only being able to download a few things a night. So that alone is reason to pay, now that I'm working and have money, I don't have time so to pursue porn in my spare time, I need efficient methods that don't irk me.

The second reason is because it gives me voting power - I'm able to influence the face of porn with my dollars. I keep good sites alive and let bad sites die. Sure my voting powers aren't massive, but you can bet my dollars spent on porn have more power than any vote I've cast in any county, state or federal election. I'm picky and I want porn I like to prevail. It is the same reason that I never turn down a product survey - surveys are usually quite small (1500 people at most usually) that gives an individual vote massive sway comparatively to any normal election. So yes! I may be the reason you see washing machines showing up in your stores with paint jobs depicting Unicorns battling Ninjas. I mean come on, isn't that better than beige?! Geeze a collective review usually spells out the pro's and cons of site review. But what Pink Panther is saying or asking I' m not sure? Are you questioning the cost of a site? Honestly you're all over the place? Will

I'm with Toadsith on this one, it simply is not worth my time or hassle to try to obtain copy written material illegally. Plus doing so defeats the material owner's ability to stay in business.

So if there's porn you like, why not pay for it, and save the time, hassle, and yes a bit of conscience, and keep the producer of it in business to make more.

Toadsith is right, the almighty dollar is the most powerful voting influence we have, in any industry.

So, Toadsith, if I give you a dollar, can the Unicorns and Ninjas be having sex with Mary Hart on my refrigerator instead? Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb. - Batman

You know, the company I work for used to deal with a company that produced custom refrigerator door skins that you'd apply over top of your normal fridge. Of course that would set you back more like $50 at the time and you had to provide them with the graphics. Sadly, I think they closed up their custom individual orders division and have gone back to industrial applications. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

It certainly can be easier to donwload dirrectly from the site, but sometimes it can actually be easier to download form somewhere else. The trouble with downloading somewhere else is you do not what you are getting in terms of viruses and such, and you do not know if you missing the video you would call a total gem but is not posted. If you go to the site you are assured you will get a chance to see everything they offer and not miss the one video that having makes you feel that it was money well spent.

The difference between websites and actual dvds is that you can get hundreds of hours of good video for the price of one middle of the road dvd. When it comes down to it the price of the site is not all that bad. $20 or $30 is much cheaper than a movie at the local adult store if you want something good. Granted the price of sites has been going up.

When it comes down to it for me the cost of the site is the lower end of my expenses for downloading. I have to pay for internet and hard drives as well. The dsl I have cost me $80 per month because I have to pay for a worthless phone line, and I pay about $130 per month on hard drives, although that price is coming down :). So there I have $200 per month. I have 4 $10 subscritions, getting ready to end 2 of them, and one $18 to digital desires. So basically only about 20% of my monthly porn downloading budget goes towards membership fees. Of course this grows when I get a $30 membership.

Paying $10 a month to Videobox really is not a big deal especially when you consider how much I get from them. It is usually more than 25 GB per day. 25 GB just in terms of space would be like 4 dvd from the store, and if I pay say $40 a piece you can clearly see which is a better deal. So why even bother trying to steal it.

I will say though that it is nice to download a few ripped off videos to get a real idea of what is inside a site before joining. But the site should not feel as if it were losing anything here because if I like it I will join the site to get more. Otherwise I likely would not have joined anyway, so they lost nothing. It is basically advertising for them. Unfortunately not everyone would use it in that way.

This is a question to ponder for a moment no matter if it is about internet porn, dvd, music, or whatever. Is it stealing if you download and play a song/video/picture without paying for it if you would never download it if you would actually have to pay to get it? Since it does not cost them anything if you download it from someone else's site an they were never going to get your money anyway....hummmm..kinda crosses into a gray area.

Is it stealing if you go into a store that sells maps and ask the clerk for directions and he gives them to you, with out purchasing a map? "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

My honest response is .

I have used other resources as I am and old school software designer by trade back in the day of C++.

I could easily do as is sugested, infact I think maybe a few videos linger from days past where I tried that idea.

But, I think giving your buddy a peak at your porn collection or even giving him a few vids is a far cry from ripping sites.
I do not condone either as its very expensive to produce porn and just like music its out there now you have a choice.

Raise the price of porn by getting it illegal or do the right thing and pay for it.

Example, I was partners in a Landscape business also years ago, and we were contracted to clean and entire yard tip top shape we were told they were selling it. After we gave a bid of 2500.00 they accepted and gave a 10% deposit.
We finsihed the job and went to get paid the next day and knowone was there, not a car nothing the place was empty.
It ended up being renters that wanted us to clean up and tben they split after getting their deposit back they timed it well too.

Long story short someone took something from us for nothing.
They figure oh well , we will make it up.

Thats the same thing if you steal porn my friends.

So if you are gonna jerk to something make sure you havent
jerked others around to get it.

"There are a lot of people posting in those forums that take the position that you'd have to be a moron to pay for porn."

So if everyone took their lead and decided to never pay for porn again, eventually there would be no porn to download, at least nothing of any quality.

I consider 30 USD a pittance when it gives me a month to select at will from a vast archive of material, which many premium sites offer. I Remember the old days when I'd plunk down 7 or 8 bucks for a glossy magazine at the corner stop-n-shop and I was lucky if I got a handfull of usable pictures.

I had a friend in the early 2000's who refused to pay a cent for porn. He'd spend all day downloading blind from various newsgroups via Outlook Express. I got tired of the time-consuming, pot-luck atmosphere of newsgroups very early on and began paying for what I want. Time is money too.

Besides, paying for it makes me value it more, naturally. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Edited on Dec 04, 2008, 01:42am
