At one time, back in the 1960s, that might have been a rude and embarrassing question. But today? Does it make a difference that people can live together openly without marriage? Or have children without marriage? So why is it such a big deal that the mother might not be sure who the father of her child is? Can't she just say she's got the right to breed with whoever she wants? And as long as she says it with confidence and a smile, she can say, "Fuck you. That information is private." I'm not saying that society in general will cheer her position. But there are women out there (actresses I've read about) that take that position. They are often lesbian or bi. | |

Sad news article. You read the story and wonder what's happening to Randy Quaid. Are the problems he's having with the law (being arrested for using a bad credit card, living on the property of a house he used to own) a sign of mental illness, drug use, or what? The man (and his wife) apparently need not just legal help, but mental help as well. And he is not that old. Eli Wallach appears in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which opens today. He is also in another movie, The Ghost Writer, which opened this year. The guy is 94. He's been married for 62 years to Anne Jackson (the actress). Wallach will be getting an honorary Academy Award this year. I thought he was great as the bandit leader in The Magnificent Seven. And he was great as Tuco in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with Clint Eastwood. The man is a freak. Married 62 years to one woman. Still acting after 65 years in the business. Being both a fan of Quentin Tarantino's movies and a fan of good history, reading Patrick K O'Donnell's fine book, The Brenner Assignment: The Untold Story of the Most Daring Spy Mission of World War II, which discussed OSS missions behind enemy lines in Italy in the latter days of WW II, I was blown away to realize how much of Inglorious Basterds was very close to life, including an OSS captain who could easily have been a model for Brad Pitt's character, stories of all-Jewish or mainly-Jewish units that went behind enemy lines to kill as many Nazis as they possibly could, and SS commanders, fully as smart, ruthless, and persevering as the main Nazi character in the film. Good stuff! | |

I had to share this with my fellow PU members: Justin Bieber is open to falling in love with a fan. Oh my gosh, golly, gee whiz! Justin Bieber is one of the hottest teen stars around. Funny that you have this story. I guess this is his PR team doing damage control after pictures of him kissing a girl in the back of a cab surfaced last week. The girl in question is his opening act. Justin is a 16 yrs old that looks about 12 or at least that`s how they want him to look. This kid is destined to have serious issues in the not too distant future. Editors are sort of the directors behind the scenes, and they can end up having a lot of control over a movie's final cut, though the director is probably heavily involved too. Sad because it might have been an easily preventable death and she likely would have worked for a few more decades.
Take a Camelbak full of water or lots of bottled water! Triple digit heat is dangerously hot, regardless of the humidity, though being in bone dry Southern California could probably make you lose water faster than you realize. When it's really humid and hot it's like your in a sauna and you're much more aware of how much water your body is losing. But you're right going hiking alone can be risky. The S. Cal users can probably attest to this better, but I have heard there are numerous mountain lions around L.A. and San Diego and they pose a serious threat to people and their pets. To be fair PP, on CNN the other night they said she headed out with a companion, but turned to go back down the canyon alone. It may be semantics, but that is hiking alone as she chose not to continue with her companion - regardless of the fact that she started out with a friend. Obviously her death may not have been preventable even if she had stayed with her companion... Perhaps what they said on CNN was wrong, not like it'd be the first time. Either way, it is a sad story. PinkPanther, I understand you are angry and upset that she died. I believe it was careless for this woman to be hiking alone with her dog in a remote area where the temperature was extremely high. What help was available if the woman had a problem? People are sometimes careless. And sometimes it does not turn out well. The fact that this woman died indicates that there was some problem, or she would not be dead. I don't know if it was the same thing in the US but Iron Man 2 was sold at the ridiculously low price of 22$ for the Blu-Ray version and 22$ for the regular at Walmart in Canada. Those prices were sure to boost sales. Just to compare a movie released this week. The Blu-Ray version of Beauty and the Beast is sold for 28$ at walmant in Canda. We are talking about a nearly 20yrs old movie. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

I saw both Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2 at the movies. I liked both movies, but thought Iron Man 1 was better. Enjoyed the relationship between Robert Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow in part 1, where they are getting close. Then in part 2, the relationship started over, and they didn't even get as far together as they had been in part 1. Kind of hard to develop relationships, or advance further, than "interested" or maybe "sleeping together", when you have separate movies. Especially for comic book movies. So the relationship in part 2 of Downey and Paltrow went nowhere. Also liked the story in part 1 better. There was more emotional involvement. The Downey character grew in part 1, from being a pure playboy to someone who cared about Paltrow emotionally, as well as someone who cared about his country and people in general. And the villain (Jeff Bridges, mainly), was excellent. Mickey Rourke was more of a cartoon villain. Along with Sam Rockwell, another cartoon villain. And Scarlett Johansson, a lovely hunk of flesh, was just wasted as a minor character. She was there more to introduce her character for other movies in the franchise, than as someone to be interested in in this movie. Iron Man Part 1 was a great introduction. Iron Man Part 2 was a step backward, as far as I am concerned. | |

Well, even at $20 a copy, over 5 million copies means $100 million dollars in sales. That is almost all pure profit. I figure it costs less than $1 to make the DVD. Have to split the revenue with the retailer, etc., but this is a blockbuster movie with huge profits going to the studio. Separately, Disney, which has a huge catalog of back movies of classic cartoons, has made bundles of money from their DVDs, TV shows, merchandising, etc. | |

Movie marketing costs-Not sensible or reasonable: I'm not in the business, obviously, but the financial side of movie making appears to have little sense or reason. A mid-level movie that costs $32 million to make, costs $50 million to market. That does not make sense to me. You spend $32 million to make a movie, and then it takes $50 million to advertise the movie? It would seem that you would spend the bulk of the money to make the movie, which is a "somewhat" lasting product (theatrical run, DVD sales, TV sales, whatever). And then you spend a much smaller amount of money to advertise or "sell" the movie to the public. Why spend such a huge amount of money on advertising, which has an extremely short-term effect on sales? The budget for making a movie is very well calculated before they start filming and unless there is a major problem during production then cost overun should be minimal. The reasons why the marketing can be more expensive is that you can't predict the cost of advertising on TV ahead of time since it's based on the show and time slot you select and those numbers can fluctuate based on the popularity of the show(s). I think radio and print advertising is prety stable so those numbers should not fluctuate very much. You then have to add the cost in paying the actors to attend film festivals, red carpet events, press junkets and so forth. It's also possible that smaller movies require a bigger advertising budget because unlike a blockbuster that has word of mouth buzz propelling them along, they need to tell people what their movie is about. Average movie ticket price is $13 in New York City. And I thought my area was high for tickets (I live in a suburb of Los Angeles). People who live/work in New York City need a higher salary because of the higher cost of living. "I'm heartbroken," David said of his separation from Courteney. "I'm not the one who called this separation in order...we're still in love with each, we're still best friends." According to David, he and his wife of 11 years began to drift away from each other. "After our 11th year anniversary she gave me the motorcycle and said, 'I don't want to be your mother anymore,'" David said in the interview recalling a past incident with Courteney. The Hollywood rumour mills have been active for quite a while now about both of them and I think there were some indescretions from both sides. It's next to impossible to keep any secret if you are in the public eye. The days that an actor like Rock Hudson could pretend to be the are nearly gone. It`s getting harder and harder for actors and actresses to do the pretend game and get away with it. Who knows, maybe David was a fan of natural women and when Courtney got some large implants then he lost interst and it was was the beginning of the end. Then again it`s Hollywood and can anyone name me an actor or actress that is still married to their first wife or husband? I mean longer than 15yrs since 10 seems to be the magic number for Hollywood break-ups. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

Thanks Toad. That's pretty impressive and Ed is married to actress Amy Madigan which makes this even better since that is usually a good indication that the mariage will break up because of their onscreen pairing or the fact that one is more popular than the other and that often causes issues in the mariage. I've ceased being a movie buff a long time ago....just seems to happen to a lot of guys my age. However, Perusing this thread for the first time, I've picked up on some pretty nifty stuff....I mean, like, shucks! I don't get this much up-to-date news even on the major news and entertainment TV channels. And you, 1k2fireone, they could use you at CNN. But what actually spurred me to pen this post was your opening up the subject of Eli Wallach. This master showman is far and away one of my favorite actors of all time. The man has talent to burn. Why I haven't seen him playing in leading roles is beyond me.....unless he choose to do character parts. It doesn't surprise me that he is so highly sought-after for parts....the damed man simply lights up the screen. And, more importantly, he makes his counterparts look better than they actually are.  | |

The actor was a patient of the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, a San Fernando Valley clinic that caters to actors in the multibillion-dollar adult entertainment industry. The actor's identity and gender have not been released. Clinic spokeswoman Jennifer Miller told the Los Angeles Times that efforts are under way to notify individuals who may have had sexual contact with the actor. Miller did not return calls or e-mail from The Associated Press on Tuesday. Wicked Pictures and Vivid Entertainment told the Times that they stopped production as a precaution when the positive test was revealed. Los Angeles County public health officials and state occupational health officials have said the widespread lack of condom use on porn sets puts performers at risk for contracting HIV and other diseases. Major adult film producers, including Hustler's Larry Flynt, have spoken out against the use of condoms in porn because viewers find them to be a turnoff. Last year, a woman tested positive for HIV immediately after making an adult film, and in 2004, an HIV outbreak affecting several actors spread panic in the industry and briefly shut down productions at several California studios. Porn actors are required by law to test negative for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases within 30 days of going to work on a film. State workplace safety officials at Cal/OSHA are considering strengthening rules designed to prevent transmission of disease through bodily fluids to specify the use of condoms in the adult entertainment industry. Currently, the same laws that call on health care professionals to wear gloves and other protective barriers when dealing with patients applies to the adult film business, but the laws don't make specific provisions for porn. AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein said his organization has been advocating for a tightening of the rules, and the adult entertainment industry and AIM clinic would "do everything in its power to prevent us from knowing who was impacted." Weinstein said the latest case is the ninth HIV-positive adult film star to be treated at the AIM clinic since the 2004 outbreak. Chief Counsel for Cal/OSHA Amy Martin said the clinic has been uncooperative in providing state regulators with key information by citing a patient's federal right to medical privacy. But the clinic has even refused to provide redacted copies of employment histories for infected actors, which would allow the state to investigate porn production companies without naming the sick patients, Martin said. HIV is spread most often through sexual contact, but can also be contracted through sharing contaminated needles for drug use, infected blood products, or babies born to or breast-fed by infected women. Popularity is a funny thing. Eli Wallach is a major character actor, who has been in continuous demand for over 60 years in plays and movies. He's played leading roles on stage, but never got leading man status in movies. Although he is and was a major recognized talent in movies. As I said before, I thought he was great in The Magnificent Seven and in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. | |

I'm certainly not the marriage expert here at PU, but some states have no waiting periods after filing divorce, so it theoretically could be granted the same day. Tennessee law requires 60 days, but New Mexico has no waiting period, so that's probably why they filed there. Just saw Never Let Me Go the other night, and it is an excellent film, I highly recommend it. Although it is sad, it definitely left my lady depressed for the rest of the night - a good movie nonetheless. If only Keira Knightley weren't in it, I would say it was excellent - there is something about her that just irks me, even though I normally like thin, athletic, small-breasted women... And to poke an older post in this thread, Iron Man 2 is a horrible movie, I felt ripped off even though we only paid a dollar at Redbox. I'm not sure why movies like this make so much money, poor plot, ridiculous special effects, subpar acting, whatever... Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars. Stop the press! Harrison Ford might be willing to do another Indiana Jones movie. Would the fact that Ford made $65 million from Indiana Jones Part 4 have anything to do with that idea? I've enjoyed most of what Harrison Ford has made throught out his career but Indy his not a role that he can still pull off anymore than he could do Han Solo. Those roles require youth and he's 68 yrs old. At some point your integrity should appear and you would put away the hat and whip and tell George that if he wants to make another Indy film then find a younger actor. I think that's what they had in mind with the introduction of Shia's palying his son in the last film. Talking about Harrison and George has just reminded me that I read somewhere that there are some rumours that George wants to make a sequel to Return of the Jedi. I know he mentioned for years that he wouldn't do any but he seem to be exploring the idea. I would much prefer that if he's going to do any sequel to Star wars and the other movies then he should remake Star Wars with new actors and simply continue with these same actors. I really don't want to see Carrie Fisher, Luke Hamill or Harrison Ford reprising their roles. That would be worse that the 3 prequels. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

I like Ford and I like the first three Indy movies. but the fourth...aliens! I mean, what the fuck?! Who cares how old someone is when it felt like such a ridiculous concept to begin with. Plus Ford's age was more integrated into the plot, so as to be a part of the humor rather than hinder the action. I knew I was in trouble the moment I saw Indy survive a nuclear blast because he was in a lead lined refrigerator. Are you kidding? They addressed his age but nowhere like they did for Sean Connery's charater in Indy 3. Sean was 59 when he did Indy and Harrison was 63 when he did Indy 4 but Hrrison certainly didn't act like a 63yrs old. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

Kim Yun-jin from the ABC series Lost was nominated for best actress for her performance in Harmony, a story of female prisoners in a choir along with Yun Jeong-hee from Poetry who won the best actress at the Grand Bell awards and Jeon Do-yeon, who has previously won the best actress award at Cannes for director Lee Chang-dong’s drama Secret Sunshine. Su Ae from Midnight FM and Seo Yeong-hee from Bedevilled were also nominated in the section. For best actor, Lee Byung-hun from I Saw the Devil and Kang Dong-won from Secret Union were nominated along with Park Hee-soon from A Barefoot Dream, Won Bin from The Man from Nowhere and Jeong Jae-young from Moss. Separately, the director Lee Chang-dong’s Poetry was excluded from the nomination for the award’s best picture and best director as Lee boycotted the awards and refused to attend the ceremony since 2002. Lee won the best pictures at the awards with his debut film Green Fish in 1997. But Chosun Ilbo, a conservative South Korean newspaper which hosts the awards, has run into frequent conflicts with Lee when he served as the minister of culture, sports and tourism under a liberal government led by the late president Roh Moo-hyun in 2003. Regardless, actresses Mun Sori and Jeon Do-yeon who starred in Lee’s films were nominated for the awards and attended previous festivals. “The film Poetry was excluded as Lee strongly expressed through direct and indirect routes that he will not attend the awards ceremony,” the awards’ organizers said in a press release. “But we nominated Yun based on a decision that the awards could not curtail the actor’s rights to her reward regardless of the director and the producer’s political judgment.” This year’s Blue Dragon Awards ceremony takes place on November 26 in Seoul. Is it stupid or smart to require viewers to watch an advertisement before they can watch the trailer for a movie? After all, a trailer for a movie is advertisement for the movie. So Yahoo (and other sites) are now making you watch an ad before you can play the trailer for a movie. I used to watch trailers on my PC to get an idea of what the movie is like, but being forced to watch advertisements I don't want to see, means I am going to be much more selective on which movie trailers I will watch. I wonder how many other people are watching less movie trailers because of the commercials that are required before you can view a movie trailer? And since Google took over YouTube, you now have to watch an advertisement before you can watch a YouTube clip. Is there a zapper program that will kill the ads, so you can go directly to the movie trailer or the YouTube clip? | |

Parts of the conspiracy are being exposed: East coast people who hate L.A. (and perverts from Northern California in the San Francisco/Sacramento regions) have long ago declared war on the beautiful city of Los Angeles. As patriots, we need to fight back, and send nuclear missiles to all regions East, North, and South of us. Since our nearest neighbor to the West is Catalina Island, I believe, and since we enjoy friendly relations with that tiny land-mass, we can save our Weapons of Mass Destruction for the real enemies that are surrounding our beloved city and county. I live in the county of Los Angeles, not the city, but I urge both county and city residents to work together to destroy our enemies. Perhaps we can get George Bush to lead this fight, since he did so well in the struggle against the Evil Empire. Or was that Ronald Reagan, who was fighting the Evil Empire? Through decades of disaster films, Los Angeles has been targeted by aliens, toppled by temblors, sunken by tsunamis, leveled by lava, and a rogue tornado once took out the Hollywood sign. And so it will be that calamity again strikes the City of Angels in the new sci-fi film "Skyline," opening Friday, followed by another bout of destruction early next year in the movie "Battle: Los Angeles." What is it about L.A. that invites such repeated devastation? "People love watching Los Angeles get destroyed," says "Battle: Los Angeles" director Jonathan Liebesman. "It's nice to screw up the great weather." But there's so much more to it than that. The city is home to Hollywood and the movie business, so the artists who write about, direct and execute mass destruction in Los Angeles are often intimately familiar with the territory. Production designer Jackson De Govia — who helped blow up the Beverly Center shopping mall and decimate Wilshire Boulevard's museums in 1997's "Volcano" — says he loves trashing his own city on film. "One of the funnest things you can do in movies is blow stuff up," says De Govia, who also pulverized Nakatomi Plaza in the original "Die Hard." "And if you're blowing up your hometown, and that hometown is Los Angeles, it's even better, because who hasn't wanted to do that at times?" L.A. is a city filled with internationally recognized landmarks — the Hollywood sign, the Capitol Records building, City Hall and the skyscrapers of downtown — which make for "convenient cinematic shorthand," says Craig Detweiler, director of the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture at Pepperdine University. "It allows the scale of the disaster to strike everybody," he says. "Everybody recognizes the Hollywood sign. It's like, 'Oh, that's big.'" Apart from its landmarks, L.A. is a popular disaster-movie locale because of its geography. Sitting in a seismic zone on the western edge of the continent, it is surrounded by beaches, mountains and deserts. In real life, the city is subject to floods, fires, earthquakes and big waves, so seeing freeways collapse or Santa Monica swallowed up by the sea (as in "2012") isn't such a stretch. "L.A. can have these multiple functions as an apocalyptic disaster place because it's on the verge between urbanism and nature," Braudy says. "There's a sense of the precariousness of human habitation over this potentially eruptive nature." Los Angeles is also a city many people love to hate, notes American Film Institute historian Bob Birchard: "L.A. and certainly Hollywood have been associated in some people's minds as a hotbed of the devil's work, so that underlying element is part of the genre." That notion isn't just implied in 1996's "Escape from L.A.," it's stated: Los Angeles becomes known as the "island of the damned" and "a deportation point for all people found undesirable or unfit to live in the new moral America." Birchard says the first disaster film was "The Lost World" in 1925, in which London was destroyed. New York took its first on-screen beating in 1933's "King Kong." Since Los Angeles didn't rise to prominence until after World War II, it wasn't a popular site for annihilation until 1952's "War of the Worlds." Since then, the city has been subject to all kinds of disasters, both natural and otherworldly, in films such as "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston, "Superman" with Christopher Reeve, and more recently "Terminator," "Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012." Ultimately, heaving destruction on Los Angeles shows Hollywood's sense of humor, sense of optimism and a real love for its sunny, palm-lined home. Greg Strause, one of the filmmakers behind "Skyline," says the alien-invasion flick was inspired by the breathtaking view from his Marina del Rey condo. The invaders' first target? Movie studios. "It's a strange coincidence that the motherships, they descend on all the studios first," he says with a laugh. "One's in Culver City. One's in Century City... Those aliens, they have peculiar tastes." "We barbecue all of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills," adds co-director Colin Strause. The destruction was achieved digitally at the Strause brothers' own visual-effects firm, Hydraulx. The company also did special effects for "Battle: Los Angeles," another alien-invasion tale as seen through the eyes of one Marine platoon in L.A. De Govia and his team lovingly rebuilt almost the entire Miracle Mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard at three-quarter scale for the destruction scenes in "Volcano." They also built the Beverly Center in miniature. Then they blew everything up. A longtime L.A. resident, he's been moved — literally — by other disaster films set in the city. He wanted to buy a home near the reservoir in the Hollywood Hills, but decided against it after seeing "Earthquake," in which the reservoir's dam breaks and floods the neighborhood below. "It's always in your mind," he says. "Dams do break. We see it in movies all the time." But regardless of the on-screen devastation, there are always a few survivors in these films, along with a message of hope, which USC pop-cultural historian Leo Braudy relates to the West Coast's spirit of optimism — yet one more reason for Hollywood to choose L.A. when doing digital disaster. "It's kind of hedged, but there's always hope: Hope for change, hope for resurrection," he says. "It's an odd kind of Western optimism: We're going to start over again, like a phoenix rising from its own destruction." It's cathartic to see people triumph over tough challenges, and it's fun because it's all pretend. Los Angeles may be in ashes, but step outside the theater, and there it is in all its gilded glory. "L.A. is good at playing itself in film. It's a familiar face," says Detweiler. "Just as we expect Will Smith to rescue the day, we expect L.A. to get blown up and somehow miraculously reappear in the next summer blockbuster." | |
