Just had that dreaded drive not responding with 2 years+ of collection on

Just realized the last 2 years or more collecting but never getting around to backups has today turned the drive on and saying drive needs to be formatted to work and error in a directory or something. So gutted, all them sites, all them gems gone it looks. It is the major trouble with collecting porn, drives simply don't last long and they are quite expensive and backups take ages to do at the best of times and finding space for so many hard drives.

I'm doing a disk check scan now with windows 7 and its going as slow as hell, will probably take 24 hours at the rate its going and not knowing if even then it will be a complete waste of time, but I guess I've got to try it to try and save the drive.

I'm having a bad month with drives as it happens, bought one of them portable drives for my business backup drive and that failed on me after trying to do a backup and then it wouldn't do anything.

So not a happy bunny. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

I feel for you.

There are people here at PU saying that you need to backup your porn and other data on a continuous basis.

But I'm too lazy or disorganized to do that.

Hoping that any of my drives that fail do that after I'm safely buried in the ground.

It's sad to hear this. It takes too long to collect, and the best porn is something you don't want to lose. It is irreplaceable if the site is long gone, so what I do when I download, is to very quickly transfer to two externals. I make the time to do one after the other so I always have at least one backup, because I know they are going to eventually fail. Hope you manage to salvage that material elephant.

Well I maybe Ok, weirdly one directory won't open and luckily its not really great stuff in it and from what I can tell the other directories at the moment still open and play movies ok, so I'll maybe be OK, crossing fingers. So relieved as you are correct it takes so much time to collect and to lose what was my bestest stuff would of probably given up collecting altogether and found a new hobby lol. He's hoping I'm ok and I can get another drive, slightly skint at the moment though but needs must.

Oh yeah I ended the scan as it was probably going to take a couple of days and couldn't leave the machine on that long, so slow it was unreal.

Cheers for the support guys anyway. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

I'm hoping you can salvage the majority of your material. If it's irreplaceable it hurts. Non porn fans wouldn't understand that. It's a hobby and some of us are collectors, even though it's just porn, it's a collection. Gotta get that drive. Good luck with the rescue operation.

One trick to salvage data from a failing drive sounds insane, but it does work in some cases.

Put the drive, along with some sort of moisture absorbent (like the dessicant packets that come with a lot of products), in a ziplock bag and put it in the freezer. Wait several hours for it to cool down. Hook the drive to a USB adapter or in a dock and quickly copy everything you can to a good drive. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I lost my drive a few months ago, lost the entire DDF, AMK, FTV and Twisty picture collection and a shitload of videos, almost 2TB worth of porn, 75% of my collection . Almost cried over it, took forever to sort through all them zip files. I took it to Geek Squad and they said they could recover the data, for around $5,000 per terabyte! So I just bought a new drive and have to pretty much start my porn collection all over. Hope you can salvage your collection. Edited on Jun 25, 2013, 10:11pm

Since I got my collection fried years ago I operate on the motto of "Even though you got backup you still need backup". One never knows when the dreaded "click-whirr" will start to come from a backup drive so I have another external just to be backup for my backup. Admittedly I only update the duplicate backup once or twice a year but it beats the time and expense of trying rebuild.

That's how my sickness got started - but I'm not giving up the habit. I have some material on more than a few bare drives that sit disconnected from the computer. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Another interesting reply, witty one, as well as one sprinkled with your usual unique style of humor.
Never un-noticed, I would add, is your proclivity for packing in the kind of stuff that gets our attention.

This one for example, was purely instrumental in shifting my thinking on how to deal with the situation conveyed in this thread..... namely wasting no time devestng oneself of the whole smear ...........buy all new stuff and start over.

Screw revamping.

Also, hasn't it been ascertained that the fun is really in collecting... I rest my case
