Gadgets - get your engines cranking? I found it interesting to see the reactions to Steve Jobs' announcement of the Apple Tablet yesterday. On the one hand, it's cool to see the tablet computers that used to be seen only in Star Trek coming to fruition so quickly, but for my tastes and needs, I can't see buying one. I suppose if I were the type that has or wants an ipod and has or wants an iphone or other "smart" phone and has or wants a portable DVD player and has or wants a portable game player, well then it would be a bargain to have a device that can do all that AND be an ebook reader. But I've got the simplest cell phone ever made and don't hardly know how to do anything but save phone #'s and make calls, I've got no ipod or portable DVD player or portable game player. I did buy the less expensive version of the Kindle - got a good deal through my job - and I've got to say that I really like it - it's a really immersive experience to read without all that weight being too heavy on one side then too heavy on the other, then the pages flip back so you lose your place, etc. With the Kindle, there's just you and the words - and with a good book, that's exciting. Luckily for Apple, the world is filled with people a hell of a lot more gadget-hungry than I am.

I'm with you on this latest Apple release. I can understand the Ipod, Itouch and Iphone but the Ipad leaves me confused. It's too big to be a music player, too cumbersome to be a phone and it's not a very good platform for games. I guess it's pretty good to take on a road trip since you can load it full of movies for the kids but I don't know how many people will spend 500$ for a movie player? I guess it's easier to have one Ipad than to carry 3 or 4 books with you but then again who normally carries more than one book around to read? The only ones that come to mind are people going on vacation. The problem is that although one Ipad is better the 3 books. I can't see too many people taking their 500$ book on the beach where sand and water are you too main thing. Then there is the fact that leaving you pocket book to go for a swim is fine but I don't think you'd do the same with the Ipad. I'm curious to see how many people will flock to the Istore to buy an Ipad? I'm not talking the first few that would buy a bag of shit if it had the Apple Logo on it but your average person. Will people still be lining up to buy one in six months and will it still be the must have Christmas gift? Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm still in the Gutenberg-era gadget phase when it comes to reading--i.e. these things called 'books.' I do primarily use an Apple computer for most things but the whole Apple cult has sort of passed over my head. I don't like Kool-Aid and group think just isn't my thing, so waiting outside a store overnight to throw away my money on the latest electronic gimmickry is pretty stupid. I will even go so far as to say that given how far down the toilet the U.S. economy is that all the fanfare and press over Apple's newest toy is obscene, and may even explain many of our current problems. Everybody is too busy caring about how many tasks all their gizmos and gadgets can do to give much of a shit about real problems, like why the U.S. is the only industrialized country to view universal health care as an unnecessary entitlement that intrudes on people's freedom, or when is the porn industry going to get a federal bailout? Oh, and forget to mention, what's up with the name? I have already read numerous jokes about how thoughtlessly feminine hygiene-sounding anything with the word 'pad' in the title is, though maybe they are trying to expand their female customer base. MadTV even did a funny parody of Apple's gadgetry and came up with the name back in 2006. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I think there will be some market for this, but not as much as they like. It still requires people to carry a phone. The stuff the tablet can do is cool, but people want away from carrying multiple devices. They keep this up and they will have to make an Apple/Batman Utility Belt. If you want to buy this thing I would suggest waiting. Apple is well know for price skimming. They price things too high and shortly after launch reduce the price. The problem with the iPad is that it's supposed to fit somewhere between a smartphone and a notebook, but it doesn't actually have the capability to replace either one of them. If you buy one, you still have to carry your smartphone, and, at the moment, it's not full featured enough to fully replace even a netbook, let alone a notebook. We may be able to say different in a year or two, but right now, this is a product without much use in most people's day-to-day lives.

TBH my view of modern multi-purpose devices is that they are average to crap at everything they set out to do. If I want a computer, I'll buy a computer. If I want a phone, I'll buy one that I can actually speak to someone with. If I want a camera, I'll buy a camera. I am pretty straightforward that way. ;0) Cap'n. :0) Admiral of the PU Hindenburg. 2009 PU Award Hilarious Post of the Year 2010 PU Award ( I would have preferred it to be Helpful Post of the Year for Guys who Hate 'Retail Therapy' ) :0/ Sanity is in the eye of the Beholder!

Wittyguy, minus the phone you sound like you are basically describing a stripped-down laptop, which is what the iPad sounds like it should have been. Given its $499 starting price (and going up to over $800 with options) anybody with a brain would be better off spending their money on a laptop. Okay, they would be better off not spending their money at all, but the idea of putting it down on an up-gunned over sized iPod Touch makes me laugh. But I'll laugh even harder when the initial tech junkie price goes down by a $100 or so and everybody who shot their wallet's load too early gets pissed off...while they save their money for the next gee whiz toy. :) I think the one thing it does not need is a phone. I still get creeped out by people who look like they are talking to themselves only to see they are actually wearing a near-invisible headset while discussing the finer points of their shopping location. The thought of people holding a giant electronic tablet up to their ear or shouting at it in the grocery store would be too much to handle. On the plus side it would be a little harder to lose. Whatever else the Kindle does or doesn't do in the future, it's done what no other device did - it showed that the e-book is here and that there's a market for them and that a good e-book reader will be successful. Before the Kindle, there were burbles and publishers would put resources into e-books, then take them away because nobody had put a reader out that anybody was buying. Now there are dozens of e-book readers coming onto the market as well as devices that are e-book readers plus. It will be interesting to see if there's a 3rd generation Kindle that takes what Apple did and does more. Interestingly from a demographics viewpoint, the majority of sales of the Kindle so far have been women in their 50's, which doesn't surprise me since women in their 50's like book clubs and many read a whole hell of a lot and the Kindle is great for anybody that reads a hell of a lot.

Allow you to carry alot of books with you without taking up as much space, for starters.

Well, there is that. How many books do you want to read at once though? If you're someone that reads a lot, it's not at all unusual to carry multiple. If you're a fan of lengthy books, a) they're heavy, 2) they get worn and tattered easily. If you're a fan of more dense literature, it's nice to have a built-in dictionary wherever you go Then there's the book-marking and the ability to have a conversation with someone about great books and buy it and have it download to your reader during the conversation. It's like anything else. If you don't see a need for it, you don't buy it - that goes for cars, computers, microwave ovens, digital music players, and on and on and on - and amazingly, it applied to porn sites. Why would anybody need to join a porn site when there's samples all over the place - look at a few samples, get off, move on with your life. Unless you want to join porn sites - then you do - same as the Kindle.
