An alarming number of downloaded files are dissapearing from folders. Where did they go?

Think about it ..... you open a folder that you once labeled with files you downloaded from a particular site, and you get a message telling you that the folder is empty.

I shook it off when first I discovered it was happening.
But the problem has grown and I'm loosing an alarming number of my favorite pics and vids.
I haven't taken an inventory because I'm afraid Of what I might find. I know I can get another exterior drive to transfer what I can, but that'll take a lot of time because I'll have to view and clear any transferrables containing blocks that'll kick back files that came from another computer.

Anybody out there who might have answers as to what or who's the culprit that could lead to a cause? I sure would appreciate anything you can throw this way that could help. Edited on Jan 16, 2014, 03:48pm

It would probably help a little if you gave folks an idea of what your current operating system is.

Well, many thanks for the saying, Sir. I can always use the help.
As luck is well overdue, I think I may be right in answering your kind inquiry by saying the unit is a Dell, originally came with Vista operating system but upgraded to Windows 7 Premium edition.
The only thing "premium" about it, however, is it's generosity opening the door for sundry attackers from the four corners of the world. I was getting used to their rude habits and figured I'd live with it........ until my last main reason for living was being swiped from right under my nose....... well, by golly, I'm mad, an I'm goin' to my old dust-covered trunk, wiping away the cobwebs, and I'm extracting my two 44-calbers, testing the gun-belt fit around my ample waist, and, depending the forum's outcome, I shall later track down the ornery low-down vermin who's behind all this.
Or .......... I'll utilize help from one of the many PU's angelic members .......
Or.......
I'll end up mortgaging my home for funds to pay a local Guru to come to my house.

Graymane, not for sure if I can be much help, but this happened to my wife before we got married and could see it accidentally happening to anyone, though she did it intentionally, then didn't know how to work around what she did.

Just a short explanation about why she experienced "files disappearing". She had just started downloading porn. She has two children who use her computer. So the last thing she wanted was for the little ones to accidentally click on a porn movie. She found this handy feature called, "Hide folders and files". Then one day she texts me and says, "You know those files I hid? I don't know how to unhide them!"

So try this. It works in Windows 7 and 8.
Click on the start button in the bottom left corner and go to control panel.
Once inside control panel, go up to the right hand corner search box titled "search control panel". Search for "folder options".
Once inside folder options click on the "view" tab at the top. Look down the list until you see a folder icon that says, "Hidden Files and Folders". Just below it should be the option, "Show hidden folders, files and drives". Click that option then go back and see if the files are still missing.

If the files are still missing then it sounds like (from experience) your hard drive is having problems and you may want to get an external to move everything to in case it crashes. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Thanks a bunch, exoits ...... your explanation is so simple and well written even I think I could follow every step with amazing ease.
Stay tuned, I'll let you know later how things work out using your system.

Since I'm not really familiar with Win 7 I'll hold of on any general suggestions until after you see if exotics4me's suggestion helps.

However, I will mention ...

While it's not impossible, it's highly unlikely that anyone "swiped" your files from right under your nose. Stealing files isn't like stealing your wallet. When a file is "stolen" it's actually just copied. The file stays on your computer -- often leaving you none the wiser that it was stolen.

Do let us know how exotics4me's suggestion pans out. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I might suggest that if you know the name of one of the files you find missing, use Explorer Search (not Internet Explorer) and see if it finds that file. If it does then right click on the file and have it take you to the file location.

Good hunting my friend. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

Alternatively on the start menu look above "Documents" where there will be files under your user name. They are arranged slightly different to files under "Documents." For instance files downloaded using Any Video Converter are not listed in "Documents."

Another suggestion is to download Glary Utilities. At the bottom of the home display are some icons. At the centre (fifth from left) is a circle broken into three slices. Run the mouse over that and it says "Disk Space Analyzer." Run that and it breaks your disk space into files. Somewhere in there will be your files if they are on your computer.

Another round of thanks, guys. If this was monopoly, I'd give you all "Park Place and all of my railroads.!"

To Khan and exotics: I followed exotic's instruction, and all the while each step I took on the way up to the top gave me more assurance these guys really know what they're talking about;
His suggestion was tech-book level and just looking like my answer was just around the corner..
Alas, the last click didn't bring my babies home!
Not to worry, you'll both still get my "get out of jail free" cards.

Onwards now to jberry's and the squirrel's kindly guidance ....
I shall keep thee informed to the fullest what develops from this next journey, mapped for me from the great minds of two of PU's finest!

This problem may be caused by a corrupt file system and/or a failing hard drive. Your files may be recoverable, but please try to minimize using the drive that contains them, since any activity can overwrite them until they are recovered. First, I would not wait to back up everything that remains. I understand you have a Dell, what model is it? Also, is this problem confined to one drive? Is it an external or your primary drive?

Let's say for example that the F: drive is affected. Please go through the following steps:

1. Open the start menu

2. Type "cmd" in the search box

3. Right click on the cmd icon and select "Run as administrator"

4. Type "chkdsk F:" and post any error messages here. Substitute the "F" for whatever drive is affected.

Let me know, and we'll go from there. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

GM, not to point out the super obvious, but are you sure you are downloading them to the correct location, my lady used to always somehow download documents to a temp directory, edit them, and then they would disappear and she would freak out. The only way I can even think one could steal, was if your wifi was open, and or a guest wifi access was open.
I have neighbor who has non-password access to his wifi.
If you are sure they are gone there is a free program called recuva that could scan the drive and if nothing has been written over it will restore them to another drive pretty easy. I a 1tb drive act weird and lost files. I then put it on and external put a fan on it to chill the drive and ran the program. Problem was drive was over heating due to defect and ended up losing data. This program allowed me to save them and its free made by teh same people whom make CCleaner so is not spy or malware. Since 2007

I'm really excited about all this feedback.
So far, I jumped ahead to LePee's reply and went straight to my F-drive before getting into my registry. Or using JB's or Squirril's points.
What I found was so startling it lifted what little hair I still have straight up.
"Dell Recovery (F) .....4.19GB free of 9.99GB
Upon opening the drive, this is what I got:
list of 9 folders titled as follows:
$RECYCLE.BIN
Dell
Program files
Program Data
Saved games
sources
Tools
Users
Windows

Choose and opened "programs files"
inside were two other folders labeled common files and Internet Explorer.
Opened common files, into which were two more folders labled Microsoft shared and System.
Opened system folder:
That contained three folders labeled ado, msadc and Ole DB
Opened ado and got a list of icons displaying blank paper that I can only gather was once tangble files. all togerher representing not more than a few MBs.

I went from there to drive E backup. The complete starage of everything I had on my old Vista operating system before upgrading to Windows 7

Showing on that drive > 419GB free of 9.99GB
Opened that to find all my old programs and files gone ....each replaced with the numerous same blank display of a sheet of paper with the top left corner folded down.

For all practical purposes, from this layman, he's debating whether everything that was once original downloaded files and folders have gone the same route as those mentioned in beginning of this thread.

If anyone can get anything from what might be looked upon so far from me as unintelligible gibberish explaining this problem, and still can throw anything my way, before I bring in my hit-man ... the welcome mat is still out.
I the meantime, I'm following through on what so far has been thoughtfully laid-out by jberry, squirrel, LePee and the toad..

Did you try looking at the C: drive? I can't speak to Win 7 but that used to be the default letter for the primary drive.

BTW, was what you just posted actually the results returned when you ran chkdsk (as LPee23 suggested in post #10 above? Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Not yet, chief ....... as per the above said quote, I'm giving all the suggestions a go of it over the weekend.

I'm really at the point that most here who's alluded to the fact this has all the evidence of a failing hard drive has about made me a believer.
This baby's labored horrendously for over five years, stuffing her metallic gut and put-upon with all the excess of porn that I've laid on her plate.

PS..... yes, the C-drive is the primary .... and it's working flawlessly..... apart from the fact it's letting the fox in the henhouse.

Thanks much for your help on this matter. Edited on Jan 18, 2014, 08:26pm
