What's in a name? I was reading Denner's post about model names and didn't want to hijack the thread so thought I would discuss the issue here. I was wondering what your vote would be for the most overused or obnoxious stage names chosen by models in the industry? Back in the 80's and 90's there were a lot of Ambers,Bunnies, Porsches, Lynn's, and Stacys. Sometime in the 80's, models stopped using common street names and tried to get real creative. Like today, however, it just got repetitive. I personally dislike the following name choices and cringe at any name that ryhmes( e.g. Alexis Texas) : Alexis, Nikki, Candi, Jasymn, Rio,or Jayden. I also wish models would stop using a lot of X's in the last names like Staxx or what have you. I wish the industry would drop the dippy Tracy Trollop conventions and go back to more common fare when choosing names. IMO, I would find a name like Barbara Smith or Jane Williams to be more interesting and attractive than the overused cliches chosen today. Just my two cents. It would be interesting to hear your opinions. Edited on Feb 16, 2012, 04:39pm

Common names are a bad idea for porn girls for one specific reason: For a girl (especially the ones in the US), your name is your branding, and you want to own your brand. If someone types your name into Google, you want the first 10 links to actually be about you. You want to be able to buy the domain "yourname".com in case you ever decide to make your own website. That's why you almost never see a name like "Barbara Smith" anymore. They don't have to be deliberately "dippy" or "porny", but if you're looking to make a real career out of it, it should definitely be original and not common.

When I had a membership to Fucked Hard 18 recently I was a bit disappointed to see the models listed only by their first name. I'm pretty meticulous (ie anal...) about cataloging my collection and I want full names in case I want to locate all the scenes on a model that I might later have some interest in. Some of them were obvious, but since FH18 uses a lot of new, little known models I spent a lot of time on IAFD tracking models by identifying characteristics. Names like Allie, Bailey, Kara (there were four Karas on the site...), Katie, Lexi, Tiffany and Victoria are VERY popular choices among ladies just starting out and who have done little work. My guess is that if they aren't creative enough to come up with a unique name then they probably aren't creative enough to become a star.

Common names sure worked in the 70's and 80's. I guess you have a point with the web and URL's being a consideration, however. And there weren't as many models back then. It's just that I have seen enough Ravens and Jaydens today that I can't really distinguish between them anymore--at least not from memory. Most anyone over 30 would know past adult film stars just from their names. Christy Canyon, Georgina Spelvin, Jill Kelly, Seka. Then, in the late 80's it got really convoluted. I hoenstly don't recall the difference between Porsche Lyn or Brandi Lyn. Now we have Jayden Staxx, Raven, etc....say who??? Most people will never remember any of the stars today by their stage names in 5 years.

Well, I suspect that the studios or producers might be choosing the names for the models, just for marketing purposes. I would think the studios or modeling agencies are trying to build an image and might select the name accordingly. Models also seem to be changing their names quite frequently, which only adds to the confusion.

The name US performers choose is not really a big deal for me because it's pretty rare that they'll use more than one name in their career and the one they pick may look like another one but there are normally some variations that differentiate it from the other performers name. Since they tend to only use one name then searching for scnes or movies is pretty easy. I think each new generation of girls has a similar name to a past performer but I think that's more because their manager picked it for them because they looked like that past performer and managers like continuity. IAFD list 199 girls under the name Amber or a variation of that name but then you notice that a percentage of these are European performers and most of the others used a second name with Amber. Long live the Brown Coats.

Amy FH18 8.5 and I dump it in a FH18 file folder - the 8.5 is my grade of the scene. Maybe something there that ease the tension on your sphincter muscle. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee. Actually, I find it obnoxious when a site uses playmate-style names. Pier999 did this, though looking back through their model list now, it seems they've changed a lot of the names back to the more recognizable ones. Anyway, names like "Veronica Maplehurst" and "Gloria Drake" are the linguistic equivalent of "Did I just eat something?" fast food. Another annoying practice that is far more pervasive goes something like this: What's her first name? Kristina. What color is her hair? Blond. OK. Kristina Blond, then. Finally, some names are just used so much that for a long-term porn collector, you wind up with quite of lot of brush (if you'll pardon the expression) to wade through. I've got so many Ann's, Anne's, Niki's, Nikki's, Nicky's, Veronica's, Veronika's, Veroniyka's, and Verronnikya's that I need a friggin' telescope to find the damn vanishing point. Oh, I have a postscript: Girls named X XXXX. You know, like Veronika XXX, or Kelly Foxxx or Nikkii SeXxX. Boy, now that's a cliche that deserves a speedy retirement! Quick! The gold watch! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Yeah one names should be banned in porn, makes collecting an annoyance when you have so many Michelle or Anna etc. I'm with you on the boring porn names too, but do like an unusual name and creative. I think 'Ashley' probably wins the match for my collection. I counted 25 different Ashley's, and that's after culling the pre-millennium and sub top-notch performers' folders.

I seem to remember a small website that gave you a list of names and you had to guess which ones were porn stars and which were characters from "My Little Pony". The number of pornstars has incresed exponentionally since I was a kid going into a friend's garage and sneaking a peak at his father's Playboy. I laugh thinking a pair of tits on a bearskin rug was so hot. Porn has come a long way since then. Pun intended. With the creation of feature films the industry found the need to put actors names in the credits. Then VHS and now the internet has opened the door for countless actresses. The very few women who make it big time want names that are memorable. Felecia, Annette Haven, Tiffany Minx; a lot of last names that end with "X". I don't mind the "X" so much until they end it with three of them. The name does not sound any different with those extra "X's". I've personally liked names that ended with "A". Victoria, Savanna, Ava. I think that comes from the first woman I felt attraction to, Princess Aura, in the Flash Gordon serials made in the late 30's. What a crush I had on her. No one can tell me a six year old is not aware of sex appeal. For a woman that hopes to make it big, there is a lot of competition. It must be hard to come up with a name that is exotic and different from all the others competeing for the lead roles. A few will go with Mary or Anne, but I bet we haven't seen the last Sasha or Jenna yet. Warning Will Robinson

Oh, yes, good question: What's in a name?? We can all like or dislike a models name - and yes weird, wild, crazy, stupid ect. stage names chosen by the industry - BG, got a point. (just suggested a poll on this, btw). But bottom line: It's a mess for us PUs with models with too common names...you look for a certain model - and get zillion of results.. Funny thing though: Those Russians, Easteuro or what ever producers has their advantage: In (for us) strange names! But boy, are they much easier to search for...
