Spam From Hell

Courtney Sperle

In the past two weeks, I’ve received emails from the above listed ladies and about 2000 of their friends. Each claims to have met me last week in a bookstore or a Starbucks, and each invites me to click a link to see a lady with yet another name, take a shower, play with massage oil or other such “wild action” Each then closes with “authorisation trombone plow wrecker yqwekmdu” or other such nonsense. Two or three a day is not a problem. Two hundred a day is killing me.
They are never from the same name twice so my spam filter is useless.
The subject lines say hey, howdy How you doin? And any number of greetings that is common in legitimate emails.
In the past 6 or 8 months I have not surfed free sites or tube sites, where I could expect this kind of crap, but have been enrolled in 6 or 8 paysites (one at a time).

Any suggestions?

I’ve had the same email address for 30 years and changing it would be a logistical nightmare. It is a business contact for me so I have to open most of them to avoid deleting someone who wants to give me money unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.

If you are using a webmail service like Yahoo! mail or similar, check the advanced options. You frequently can boost the aggressiveness of the spam filtering engine. If not, you could try shutting down your email address for a few days - this will bounce the spam email back and may cause you to be automatically deleted, or you could use a email program that can fake a bounce-back to attempt the same effect. I know Thunderbird is capable of this feat. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Get a new email address and tell your friends and business associates what it is.

Or get two new email addresses: one for personal, one for business.

Unless you can find some program to filter out the spam on your old email address.

As far as I know, once your email address is being used by a bunch of different spammers, the easy solution is to get a new email address. Because the spam you are getting now will not stop.

Toadsith's method should work fine for you, assuming you have saved all of your clients or whatever in your address book you could even turn on the filter to only accept emails from those in your book.

You aren't using the same email address for porn and business are you? I hope not, that would be a recipe for disaster. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I get loads of similar spam but Gmail does a prety good job of tagging it as spam at the default settings. You can use Gmail's interface and services for non gmail accounts, my company ditched our exchange servers and now use Gmail for free instead but we have also kept the same email addresses. May be worth looking into. The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Why don't ISPs shut down blatant spammers?

It has to cost a lot of time / money dealing with this white noise?

It can fluctuate a little but I would say that I get over 50 spam emails per day. The great thing is that most of them go into my junk section. I will sometime peruse a few of them on the odd chance that a good email got sent there by mistake. Otherwise I simply delete them. Long live the Brown Coats.

First we got e-mail, then we got spam, then we had to get spam filters, and now we have the problem of good email accidentally going in with the bad.

And who do we have to thank for this?

The SPAMMERS

They should be force-fed massive quantities of until they die of hypertension. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I am afraid that like2fireone's suggestion is the only way that will work. You have to bite the bullet and create separate email addresses for business and porn.

No spam filter will trap this stuff without also blocking legitimate emails. And the spam will keep increasing, since, once your address is on a spam list, it gets sold to further spam lists.

NEVER use the same email address for porn and business contacts. like2fireone advises two email addresses. Let me tell you something. I have 27 email addresses! I set a up a new email address for every site I join. Then if I get spam, I know where it has arisen and I can let the site know. I then delete the email address as soon as my billing cycle has ended. So, if I get any spam at all, it is never for more than a month.

My porn addresses are completely separate from my business and personal addresses. I have an address for friends, another for banks, another for on-line purchases, another for forums ... and about 15 for porn.

You can easily let your existing business contacts know your new email address if they are in your address book. Just make a contacts group (most email software can do that) and add the email addresses for your business contacts to that group. When you have set up the new email address, send an email to yourself, with the contact group as bcc (blind carbon copy). That way, each contact gets told the new address but nobody gets to see anyone else's email address.

I am using gmx and they do a great job with their spam filter. I have to pay 10 euros/year but it reduced the spam amount from about 40-50 per day to something about 1 in 2-3 days. They have a learning algorithm which you can also feed with spam and it is quite intelligent.

Totally agree with that procedure. I would even donate some money for spam to buy. All hail to the hypnotoad! Edited on Jun 18, 2012, 04:58am
