3 x 5 External Hard Drive, 500 GB size of a thick index card I've been saving all my porn on external hard drives for the past several years. No clogging up the hard drive. Disconnect and someone can use my computer without accidentally finding a ton of porn. Much easier to organize a collection by being separate from all those business and personal files. Anyhow, the problem in the past is that external hard drives were the size of a book, needed to be plugged in separately, and were fairly heavy if you need to travel. Solution: I just bought a 500 GB external Hard Drive that's incredibly light weight, 5" x 3" x 1/2", and only needs to be plugged into your USB port for energy. It could be kept in the back of a desk drawer for those who need to hide their porn and cost me $119 USD yesterday. Just thought I'd share my excitement at a new and easy way to store and organize porn. Jay G

Always nice when you buy something and feel thrilled with your purchase. Happens so seldom these days. Congrats on the new gizmo. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator Now at: MyPorn.com "To get your ideas across use small words, big ideas, and short sentences."-John Henry Patterson

So is this thing like one huge capacity "thumb drive" with no moving parts? Who makes it? I'm interested. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

sounds like the western digital Passport series of HDs. They're pretty damn good, lightweigt, reliable, run off usb, and come in various sizes, from 260 gig all the way up to 500 (i think i heard there is a terabyte one now).

It still would have moving parts. It is basically a laptop hard drive in a very tight enclosure. For no moving parts it would need to be solid state and those things are VERY expensive still. A 500 GB, which I have not heard of yet, would likely start out at about $1000. Still, the size of a latpot hard drive is very convenient for hiding or traveling. This thing is only a little bigger than many of the new phones people carry. This has a serious travel advantage over my collection method. I have been buying 1.5 TB drives. I just bought 5 for $450. So while I got them at a significantly lower price per GB they simply do not travel well. I do not know of any enclosures yet that I can put a drive that size into due to power requirements, although I have not looked either. So it sounds like Jay G got himself a nice new toy. Sounds like a great way to carry around some "pocket porn" :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~ PU Interview

Western Digital makes it, but I don't know about moving parts. Since they call it a hard drive, I presumed it's that with a very tiny disk, and I haven't taken it apart to check. It does have a five year warrenty, though, so it's got to be pretty durable. I'll still back-up (like I do everything else) on on of my larger hard drives, though. Jay G

These are great and I have researched them as well. The reliability long term is not proven though. Just like flash drives they are short lived after awhile depending on use. Also, disconnecting a drive does not erase use of porn moreover video's. So for those that want to buy a drive and disconnect it be aware of a few factors. 1. Your computers cache depending on OS etc. 2. Your temp files are not erased upon disconnect. 3. Latest history in player. 4. Your Play lists. 5. Your IPOD or others / and associate software. The above depending on set up keep different history's removing or deleting a file does not erase registry setting that store this stuff. So beware, external drives are not 100% or even 75% removing your usage. That said very cool toy and very fast if I recall stats. Since 2007

I lost my "A LIST" stash 1-1/2 years ago that was stored on an 80Gb Maxtor external drive for no explainable reason at all, except that the drive was about 3 years old and was heavily used. I have also lost day-to-day stuff on my little flash drives as well. As a safety measure I maintain a redundant backup process where everything on an external hard drive is backed up on a second external hard drive (or, in some cases, on 2 DVD's) and I always download everything I store on a flash card to a permanent place on my computer if I want to keep the data. Also, it's important that everyone know that, just because a hard drive or a flash drive can no longer be accessed by a USB connection, it does NOT mean that the data on the drives is gone. It is most likely still there and readable, sometimes even by just plugging it into a different computer. If the price of these little index card devices goes down as fast as the prices of conventional hard drives has gone down recently, these little guys could be a terrific way to do the redundant backup without having a boat load of clumsy hardware to manage.

I have several of the Western Digital drives. I think Iomega makes them too. These aren't flash drives, they still have moving parts. The thing I like is that they are small and powered off the USB. My oldest one of these is at least four years old and I haven't had a problem yet. I have seven of them (ranging from 120GB for the older ones to 500GB for the newest one) and can't recommend them highly enough.

I really agree with the backup process and automatically back-up everything on two drives as I said. A friend told me years ago that all hard drives will fail eventually...not "if" but "when." Jay G

These are just portable or mobile hard drives; like their less portable, more stationary, big brothers minus the larger capacities and fans. I have one myself, it's very easy to move around, quiet, and it was pretty affordable. A year ago Popular Mechanics did a very unscientific test of four portable hard drives to see if they would still read/write data after being dropped on the floor. A LaCie Rugged drive survived until a 15ft fall on concrete, but it comes with rubber edging on the case, which probably makes a big difference in absorbing physical shock. They are nice for moving around data when a memory stick is too small -- you lose it too easily, and there is not enough space for all your porn, I mean data. The only thing is treat them gently (they are still a hard drive after all), use a case, and they need a powered USB port (no keyboard or monitor ports), or 6 pin FireWire port to run. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove

My externals have big fans as well alum case cooling is important to secure and safe from data loss as well hot drives do not last as long as those kept cooler. Since 2007

Been using this external for close to six weeks now and love it more than ever. Still have my larger plug-in models for backup, but they seem like dinosaurs now. Jay G
