Does Microsoft Word have a document size limit?

I keep track of all my porn in a relatively simple way; I have a three-column Word document with the first column being the name of the DVD or website, the second column being the names of the female models and the third being the drive where the folder and file is located. This seemed like a good way to track information when I started doing it a decade or more ago because my collection was smaller and I don’t know much about other software that might have been a better choice.

The possible problem I have now is that as my collection has grown my Word list has also grown. It is now 2.92 MB in size and 270 pages long. Long ago it gave up trying to point out spelling errors in names that it didn’t recognize. Lately when I try to load the document it sometimes crashes Word but more often just takes a long time to load up. Neither of these is that big a deal (I keep backups too) but I’m wondering if anyone knows if I’ll eventually hit a wall where Word simply won’t be able to handle the document. It’s just a large table and there is only text. There are no pics, graphics or hyperlinks in the document.

Can anyone provide some advice?

Thanks!

You're lucky you didn't start your record keeping in Notepad, which is much more limited than Word. I use Notepad, because it's free.

But the file limits depend on which version of Word (or Notepad) you are using.

If you are using a very old edition of Word, it might help to switch to a newer version. I remember that the maximum file size of Notepad was increased when I upgraded to a newer computer many years ago.

Or you could switch to a different (free) program, and try importing your records into that.

..................................................

From a google search:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211489

Word 2007/Word 2010 limits

Size of file Word can open 512 MB

Maximum number of records to display in recipients list dialog 10000
Note The 10000 maximum is for the recipients' list dialog. If you search in that dialog, you are limited to the displayed records even if your data source has more records. The workaround is to filter the records so that those that you are looking for will fit in the dialog or to use the Find operation in the wizard task pane.

How about Open Office?

That is a free equivalent of Microsoft Works.

Their Excel substitute Calc is very good for jobs like that.

I opened up my version of MS Word (which is Word 2000), clicked Help>Microsoft Word Help and typed "maximum size" into the index field, and clicked search.

It gave me a "limits for Word" entry.

I would guess the same procedure should give you the limits in your version too.

For Word 2000, it is 32MB, or approximately just over 10 times the size of your current 2.9MB file.

Of course the proper vehicle to use is MS Excel spread sheet. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

2.9 MB and 270 pages really isn't all that large, I have several word documents from work that are well over 10 MB, and quite a bit longer as well.

As jberry suggested, you probably would be better off using a spreadsheet anyways, easier to sort and whatnot. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.
Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Wonderful woman. We're all, we're all very fond of her. Very free-spirited.

Aye, another vote for Openoffice from me, both the excel and word equivalents are good and free from some of the quirks that word has.

I used to use word 2003 for years but if I tried to copy in text from a web page that was too large in size, word would crash. I found that if I copied the text into notepad and then into word it would work, it seems like word (the 2003 version anyway) doesn't like dealing with html and will bork itself where openoffice is ok.

Thanks to all for the replies. I've loaded the backup I have and it seems to be working better. And my comfort level is increased knowing that I'm nowhere near any maximum document size. I'll happily add to it for years to come.

I know I should use a better tool, like Excel, but I don't know Excel well enough to have any confidence to migrate the data over. And at 270 pages long I can't do it manually!

This should be pretty easy actually. Copy the entire document and paste - you do have two columns right? And if you are just copying and pasting you can't lose the original data. Wish I was there, I would help. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

There is a way, Jberry.
Although I don't know how it would go over with PU's brass; or, considering the fact one has to genuinely trust his helper, that it could be implimented.
I doubt the process is a revelation to any of our regulars, inasmuch as most are at least basically computer-savvy ... and to those who're technically advanced, the action is nothing more than a cake-walk.
This mode of attacking software problems and inquiries is growing rapidly, and despite its risk, more and more tech support using this method is being bought into play. Why? because positive and immediate solutions to software problems can be solved on the spot.
Its a proceedure I predict even PU will ultimately be taking a serious look at.

Although by now, most already know from whence I speak.
But anyway, The magic lies with a two-way connection between the party who needs a fix and a guy/gal who's able to provide the fix. The kicker? The fix-provider (via an agreed upon duel term acceptance)takes complete control and possession of your computer.... wherein he has access to every nook and cranny, in which to search for the culprits.

Or he could just email jberry the file?
(or me for that matter, it is really not super difficult to transfer a two column document into a spreadsheet) Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I'll chip in with recommending the spreadsheet. Word to Excel copy and paste shouldn't be a big problem.

I've got an Excel doc with 3 different tabbed sheets in it for my porn records that I started in 2000 or so and it's still working, even on the latest WinDoze syztim. It's 1.45 Mb, so it's not as big as your Word doc, though.

But all document types have size limits. Can't say what they are, even after a quick Google search. Sorry! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
