Still saving and collecting downloads? Does it make sense anymore?

For the past six to seven years I have accumulated 3.5 tb of video ; ( prior to that I had collected 400 to 500 of DVDs.)

Unfortunately, it just doesn’t seem practical to keep collecting; I already have 6 external drives and at some point it just seems ridiculous (and expensive) to keep adding more external drives. However obviously I’d like to still occasionally get something new. At this point, I have been trying to weed out material and reduce the amount of space I’m using but I’m find it really difficult as most of the material is stuff I would like to keep.

Because of the improvements in my Internet broadband, streaming is increasingly easy. I’m wondering if anyone out there has changed from keeping downloads to simply streaming from monthly pay sites. Obviously this means you don’t have anything new in your collection, but if you occasionally switch back and forth between memberships to different sites you still have on and off access. Anyone have any thoughts? rome476

I have been wondering the same exact thing. Where does it end? Or does it?

If you have favourite material, sure it does.

If you don't mind just viewing what is currently available, then no.

That doesn't work at all for photosets, though.

I mostly download stuff that I think I'll watch more than once so collecting is still important to me. I have started to clean one of my drives because it has stuff that I won't ever watch again. This makes space for newer stuff. Long live the Brown Coats.

The price of hard drives keeps dropping every year. And the storage capacity keeps increasing.

So, although we might complain about needing to buy "expensive" hard drives, hard drives are truly an amazing bargain.

Does saving porn on hard drives (or other media) make sense?

Depends on what you mean by sense.

Why do people spend millions of dollars on buying some paintings?

Wouldn't an enlarged photograph of the painting (or a poster) work as well? And save millions of dollars?

People like to collect. I think that for most people, the fun is in hunting/looking for new porn material, and storing it on their hard drives. You say to yourself (silently, not for public consumption), Wow! That's mine!

My guess is that very few of us who collect actually view our collections all that much. Maybe once in a while. But we spend far more time looking for new porn, than we do viewing it once it's in our collection.

Supposedly, man is a rational animal. I suspect that is theory someone thought up to make us look good. So we can feel proud.

A lot of what we do, does not make sense, if you analyze it from a cost-effective basis.

If collecting porn gives you pleasure, and you can afford it (money-wise, time-wise, etc.), then go for it.

If you think it's a stupid waste of time, then don't do it.

But if you had a collection of 400 or more porn DVDs, then you must have gotten some satisfaction from owning them. Even if you didn't have the time to watch many of them more than once.

You say your porn collection is about 3.5 TB. You can buy 1 hard disk drive for about $150, and store your entire collection on it. The price of hard drives is minimal, compared to the price you pay for memberships to porn paysites. Unless you are getting your material from tube sites, which are famous for the poor quality of their porn.

I find some humor here because I'll wager that the only time we go back and review that older material is when we think there is too much ... and we review it and decide - no, I'll keep this till the next time I review.

Which goes to my practice of editing material down to what I want to watch. While I'm not saying you want to get into the editing game it just goes to point out that I've capture the stuff I'm willing to watch repeatedly.

For me that comes down to specific performers - I might put together a compilation of some of their more memorable scenes - so that I have those set aside - Vicki Chase is a great example - I had an entire folder of Vicki (one of my favorites people for sure) and for some dumb reason/mistake I deleted the entire folder of originals. OMG!!!

But in retrospect I think, okay let it go. She will do more and I'm liable to purchase it. I'll bet if you lost an entire drive of material you wouldn't remember 95% of what you'd lost (unless of course you had written down what was on the drive).

At least I know that's how I am.

Maybe it's just me that watches my collection this way. I keep material that I watch repeatedly and then some of the material of older out of the business favorites (like Janey Robbins).

So - take one of your drive - transfer the MUST have stuff and delete the rest. I'll bet you will never miss it once it's gone and in no time you will have replaced it with fresh material (which you know you're going to do anyway). If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

I was in your shoes this last January.
I had so much I could not even remember what was where and favorite hard to find.

I took about a month and went through pain stakenly all my video's ( only to many picture to ever do that ).
So I sorted through and rated my porn

a
b
c
d
and top 100
Top 50
Top 10
In each niche

Then removed anything that did not belong, I removed about 2.5 TB from my collection that is now about 3 TB.

I did this because I had so much porn that many would not even play well on the newer monitors and were probably 10 years old.

A good way to renew your collection is grab some tea coffee or a drink set time aside each day or week and sort through. The beauty is you find gems you forget about and it renews your collection.
I used Xplorer2 because it allow preview and file deleting and sorting pretty easy.

I think we all would enjoy sorting through other members collections . But the next best thing is to have some fun and run back through your classics. It may renew your interest as well. Since 2007

Cybertoad, do you use the fee (lite) version of Xplorer2 or the paid version?

I've never used either version. But would like a better program than my Win7 search box to look at files on my PC.

And $30 for the paid version seems cheap, if it saves me the hassle of trying to find files/photos that my Win7 search box can't seem to find.

Several things keep me from adopting a "stream only" preference. In no particular order:

1. Money. Why would I pay money each month for the sake of not having to download to a hard drive? It wouldn't take many months on a site before you make up the cost of an external.

2. Here today, gone tomorrow. Unless we're talking about a major studio, you never know how long some sites will be around or before they remove older material.

3. Time. Unless the site has great navigation or allows you to build up a personal profile of scenes, you then have to navigate around to find what you want. Probably easier to find on your drive unless you're a hoarder with no organization.

4. Privacy. While we all know the NSA is constantly evaluating the quality of the porn we currently download, that's not my main concern. I would expect that the longer you stay on a site the more likely they are to see you as a cash cow, someone whose information would be worth something to other sites or individuals. Whatever privacy is in place today may not be there tomorrow.

5. Pics. If you like pics then streaming doesn't really work, especially if you have jump around to find the good shots you like online.

6. Cloud storage? I've never been a big fan of cloud storage because you never know who or what might have access to it, legitimately or otherwise. If you can find an online safe house though, that's another option. No externals to mess around with while still having 24/7 access. I would expect costs to keep dropping here as well. Probably a safer route if you worry about who might have access to or find your externals. Probably not cost effective for porn hoarders though.

There's my

I won't use the word 'never,' but I can't imagine the circumstances that would cause me to willingly stop downloading and collecting porn. I did learn in late spring this year that there is value in pruning your collection and there is value in being a bit more fussy about what you download. I managed to cut an approximately 20TB collection to half that. And I don't miss anything I deleted.

So with storage space being so inexpensive I'll continue to download for as long as I can, but now I 'quarantine' what I download to make sure I really, really want to add it to the permanent collection.

But I'll also have to admit that a lot of people must choose streaming otherwise it wouldn't be so widely offered.

I just purchased my first 4 Tb drive, so now the cost of 1 Gb storage is $0.50. With storage this cheap, I'm much less likely to delete pictures. The limits of storage used to force me to save only my favorites, but that's changed now. Finally it's realistic to download all of the pics on many sites, and store them for a fraction of the cost of membership. If I can store the content indefinitely for less than the cost of 1 month membership, I think that's a good deal. I'm done deleting pictures from sites I like, I'll just keep it all.

I haven't made up my mind on videos yet though. They are so much larger, I may have to keep only the best ones. I wish it weren't this way though. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

When i join a site, i normally site rip it.

But i have a file server with a total of 67TB usable storage space. So running out of HDD space isn't an issue for me.

I have the paid version because it has an advanced search system that the light does not. And the search is fast so you highlight a folder or drive and then click the menu and find files with options like wild cards etc and is good to find allot of stuff.

Here is a chart with a break down on the versions.
http://zabkat.com/comparison.htm

To me it is the best file manager out there, I chose not to make it the default cause windows gets all confused on some stuff so just made a task bar icon.

Have any more questions let me know been using it and light for about 5-6 years now. Since 2007

I second most of your post, but these two in particular.

One, I'm not totally sure what'll happen in the future when some Rand Paul-type junta or one of his many equally authoritarian rivals takes over the U.S. and declares eminent domain over all American porn companies, but it'll make streaming pretty useless. Okay, but more seriously though, you can't really predict the future economy of any particularly site or company. Whether it goes harder, softer, or just more "modern" and takes its older material offline because they know better.

For example, Kink.com's aptly-titled Pissing.com stopped updating sometime around 2011, but it's still available for subscription and I presume full download, but who's to say they don't suddenly one day decide "Hey, there's no electricity or water on this old site of ours, we need to take that shit down! In fact, take those other sites down too, because they're really eating up our utility bills." Sucks for the procrastinators out there. I figure at least once I download something it's somewhat safe, outside of EMP devices or outright robbery. I can always delete something in the future if I don't actually like it, but at least I had a chance to decide.

And two, while the NSA does have a Bond villian-scale facility out in Utah, I doubt they're using it to backup porn sites in case they ever go belly up. I said recently in the forum that the world is generally moving in a socially liberalizing direction, but there are still a veritable fuck-ton of anachronistic puritans with a death grip on much of the world's arts and culture. And it's almost too easy to laugh off the David Camerons of the world until one realizes that "for the children" is code meaning we are increasingly being treated like five-year olds by our respective governments. My two cents here are this - make sure the site is still around before you delete it. If you've been collecting for over 10 years, you'll be surprised how many are gone. In doing my own inventory of my collection, I found that of all the sites I have ever downloaded from, 40% have closed. Almost all of the big, high profile sites that are widely known are still there, but so many smaller, low budget sites have come and gone. I personally would have a hard time deleting anything from a site that has closed - actually there is a special kind of satisfaction in having something so exclusive. Anyway, that's just my advice. If you would still delete the stuff even after knowing the site is closed, then you can truly do without it, but my recommendation is to check first. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

Perhaps this is slightly off topic but it may interest you to know (if you don't already) that file sizes are going to go down in the not very distant future.

Today most video is encoded using H.264 (in MP4s) or VC1 (in wmv) but there are significantly better codecs that exist TODAY.

For example H.265 and VP9. Both of these can encode a 1080p video with the exact same quality as say H.264 but only take 50% of the space.

Unfortunately it takes time for these things to get adopted and become mainstream but they absolutely will. Now that more and more HD video is streaming online and 4K is trending the newer codecs will be necessary.

Given how cheap drives are now, I really don't see a problem with saving anything and everything you have even the remotest interest in. I've been backing up my files every week or so for years now. I've even gone one step further by using older, smaller capacity drives to make a third copy of the "cream of the crop" site rips and other "gotta saves". Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I find this thread very ironic. My very first post here not so long ago was singing the praises of a streaming site. I got called out by a long time member as being a shill, or something like that. Now streaming seems to be in vogue, at least by a few members. Oh, and this long time user has yet to offer an apology. Sorry, I can't let that part go.

Having said that, before joining this site (and thanks for having me!), I honest to God didn't know that most people downloaded and that there was a plethora of sites available for downloading. I've availed myself of about 1TB of downloads ever since. I have plenty of hard drive space to download, so that;s not an issue.

Now that I've had time to evaluate both approaches, I think they both have their merits. I never spent much money on the streaming site, no more than $30 or $40 a month, usually less. Granted, I came away not owning anything, but I had a huge choice. I never watch entire videos anyway. Now that downloading is not such a big novelty to me any more, I find myself using the streaming site more though not nearly as much as before. There are numerous videos I like there that I can't find on any download sites and the amount of new ones on a regular basis beats any download site I've come across.

To each his own.

I agree with this too. When I say I might delete content outside of my folder for closed sites, I am referring to stuff that is totally off topic for me. I am generally looking for stuff within my favorite niche - peeing. If I find that I have stuff even outside my niche from a site that has closed, I tend to keep it too. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

LPee23, I will say that our favorite niche seems to have a worrisome habit of eventually killing a site, at least if it's the sole focus of the site. Too many sites/series have gone extinct over the years, and I think it serves as a reminder to fans to save 'em while you got 'em; you don't know what will tomorrow will bring (or take away, as the case may be).

Even parent sites that stick around, like Kink.com and its Pissing.com niche, eventually stop updating, and, who knows, may just take down that site entirely. In their case I wonder if it was too tame, compared to the myriad of crazy fetishes among their other wild creations such as Fucking Machines, Whipped Ass, and Wired Pussy? Or maybe so many other sites starting doing it too that it no longer felt unique or "authentic" enough. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I couldn't agree with you more. When I took an inventory of my collection and checked what was still around as of last year, I found that almost 300 sites that once featured peeing content have either removed some or all of it or closed. Almost 350 remain that either still have everything or I haven't had a chance to check them out yet. It's pretty cool that you're into this stuff too. It would be great to compare notes with you. You don't have private messages enabled on your PU account, but feel free to PM/email me if you like. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.
