Experiences with Download Managers I've seen some comments on PU that suggest that Internet Download Manager is a good utility. I checked the site Internet Download Manager and found that there is a current price of $24.95 (a $5 discount) good thru tomorrow. I'm interested in knowing what you guys think about IDM and other download managers and, more importantly, how universal they are. In other words will a certail D/L manager work on any and all sites? Are there factors to consider before buying one? Etc. Thanks for any information you can provide. Edited on Jul 02, 2008, 07:09am

There is a huge amount of download managers - most not freeware. This user paid for, yes - IDM - of all. And I do not regret. I'm almost only into video-downloads (I dislike streaming and hate streaming only) to my hd - till I get rid of them again - after a while - and some for keeps. And BTW: It works fine with downloading photo zip-files too. Never will I go for a site that do not allow download managers. I've tried some alternatives to IDM - but nothing works as well and as easy as this little program. I think I got value for my money here.... I'm using GetRight DM and I'm happy with it. Ever since I bought that software 2 years ago I got every update for free. The version I bought was 5.x and now I'm using 6.3e. Those sites that aren't Download Manager friendly are mostly not worth a cent. With quality sites it makes fun to fill the queue and see how the files come in one after the other.

If you join a site and then discover afterward that your favorite DL manager doesn't work, there's a Firefox extension called DownThemAll that's been known to work. I haven't needed it yet though. Since it's embedded into a real browser it's harder for sites to figure out that it's a DL manager.

I use Free Download Manager -- that's it's real name and yes, it is free. I haven't tried any of the other managers so I can't comment if it's better/worse than the others. It is a fully functioning piece of software and it's worked fine for me on all except one site.

To me, paying for something that you can get for free is kinda foolish. Between FreeDownloadManager and the DownThemAll plugin for Firefox, the only time I haven't been able to download using a manager is when the site prohibits their use. I use FDM almost exclusively though - there's a plugin that integrates FDM into Firefox and it rarely, if ever, fails me. It's available here http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Alright. I have been using IDM for some time now and I have very few complaints about it. It has saved me a great deal of time. You can download a trial edition for free the last I checked. I would highly recommend at least doing that before buying or not buying. It has a very handy "batch" download option that is nice. It can save different file types to different location with is nice. It can download using splits, many can do this though. One of the handy features is the ability to import and export download queues from txt files. This is extremely useful for sites that have a lot of photos that are named similarly because you can use MS Excel to form the list and then import it into IDM and let it do the work for you. It also allows you set download limits and schedule downloads to happen at whatever given time of the day. Another handy feature is that you can change the file name even during downloading. You can have multiple queues, and run them at once. And many other cool things about it! The program itself runs pretty stable. I will let it run for weeks at a time 24/7 with no issues at all. The best thing I can tell you is to try it out, and compare to free managers. Keep in mind though that some managers are simply better in some conditions than others. Do keep Download Them All around though because it seems to work on sites that no others will work on because it is completely part of the browsers so there is no log in issues. Initially I used Internet Explorer's download manager, then I switched over to Firefox Mozilla about 4 months ago. Their download manager is far better than IE's, but I started this topic because I wanted to know what';s out there and what D/L managers are not effective on porn sites. I'm not getting it, probably a brain cramp. When I tried the trial version of IDM I had nothing but problems with it and had no success whatever getting even a single clip from Video Box to download at all.

I use FlashGet & HiDownload and they do the job for me, very well in fact.

DownThemAll! works great. I haven't found a problem with it yet. Before that, I was using wget and curl exclusively, and still use them. If you haven't guessed, I'm using Linux. I found of all of these, wget gives the most error-free downloads. Curl has given me a couple problems, and DownThemAll! has given me a couple corrupt files, but nothing I can't live with.
