How Do Downloads Work?

You right-click, save target as ...

No, seriously, I have a techie question. No biggie, but I've always been curious. Mostly I use IE7, if that matters.

Downloads I understand: You right-click, save target as ..., the box that says how big the file is appears, start download, then watch the progress bar and speed and all that until it's done. This is typically my experience with sites like Twistys, FemJoy, and MetArt.

Downloads I DON'T understand: After that first progress bar completes, ANOTHER progress bar shows up. Now my computer is getting noisier. Sometimes the number of minutes it's probably going to take increases, sometimes by a factor of even 3. This is typical, for me anyway, of sites like InTheCrack -- especially the vids -- and JustTeenSite.

So what's going on with that SECOND progress bar? Why does it happen? Any techie insights would be appreciated. Thanks. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Haven't used IE for downloading in a long time but the second progress bar looks like it's moving the file from a temporary location to the final one. My guess is this second process should be almost instantaneous: shouldn't take so much longer unless there's some trouble with your setup.

You should definitely give Firefox with the DownThemAll plug-in a try.

Thanks. That idea -- moving the file from temp to MyChosenDestination -- makes some intuitive sense though I don't know why it happens only with some sites. And the time that thing takes, wow, it's slow and makes the box sound like popcorn is on the way.

But instead of just changing the directory info, which I think is what happens usually when we "move" files from one directory to another on a disk drive, I guess it's actually moving the file, pieces at a time, to the "Terminus of My Porno Download."

Which seems about as stupid as the Ministry of Silly Walks. Why not just "put" the thing where I asked for it to "be" to begin with?

BTW, I do have DownloadThemAll added to Firefox, but haven't made a complete migration away from IE. And anyway, I was curious just the same.

Thanks again. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Feb 06, 2009, 03:42pm

It could be scanning for virus's. My Firefox does that if I right click and save. Normally it doesn't take very long at all but some bigger files can take alot longer.

Drooler, I believe I have an answer that sounds good enough anyway.

When you download things they are not saved exactly where you say to save them. In fact, usually, they are saved to a temporary place as it is being downloaded. The idea is that it is not going to its destination fold, thus you can not mess it up by trying to move or rename it.

When the download completes the file is then moved to the destination folder where you told it to save to and suddenly it shows up completed and ready to use. The noise comes into play because there are moving parts in the hard drive moving back and forth and a bit of strain is placed on other areas of your PC for the few seconds it is copying that file over.

Many download managers work the same way. Especially when you download a file with several connections at once, because then it also has to piece the file together.

One advantage to downloading to a separate place and then moving the file is if you back things up on dvd or whatever. If you have a half complete download and you back up that folder onto dvd you are also backing up the half completed download which for obvious reasons does you no good. Yes, that makes sense. All downloads are first put into "temporary." So if one's actually chosen destination folder gets moved or renamed before the download completes (something I'd never do, of course) the file won't be affected. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

To expand a bit on the previous explanations, I wanted to postulate first the reason it might be taking a while - do you happen to have multiple hard drives? Internet Explorer, being the archaic program that it is, stores it's download temporary files exclusively on the main system drive, no matter where that file may be going in the end. So if your porn files are stored on a separate drive, it then has to move them over to the other drive after the download is completed. To top that off, moving a file from one drive to another is slower than copying the file over because the computer is progressively deleting the original file while it is building the new file. Normally you don't notice the difference but on huge files like video files, the small percentage difference becomes noticeable.

Now if all this double progress bars and junk is annoying you, I'd highly recommend switching over to Chrome or Firefox. Both have reasonably sophisticated download managers built in and both store their download temporary file in the same folder that the final file is going. If you have hidden files toggled to visible in the settings you'll actually see two files appear when you start the download and then the temp file will be deleted once it is all completed. I'd recommend switching to Chrome as it's very simple, extremely fast (faster even than Firefox) and highly compatible with all sites. I will note that if you are worried about people knowing that you are searching for porn, you'll want to use Chrome's Incognito Window feature. When you open one of those, it automatically deletes the cookies and cached files for anything browsed in one of those windows when you close the session. This means you don't lose your history, cookies and so on for all the activity you did in Chrome's normal windows, even if it was at the same time as you were browsing porn in the Incognito Windows - it keeps them totally separate and deletes all records of what transpired. Nifty feature. I never use it because I don't hide any of that stuff, but it could be quite useful for some and it is very easy to access and use. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Ah yes, Toadsith makes a good point as usual. Having more than one drive will make difference, particularly if it is an external drive connected through USB. If it is connected through ESATA or SATA it usually is not bad.

Another thing to consider ia if you use any download acceleration. I Was for short time on a fairly week computer and found that the file merger time was sometimes longer than the actual download time. In this case, the second status bar was the progress of taking the split downloads and gluing them back together. This is great for download speed when downloading one file at a time on a nice connection, but can really bit you if you download multiple files at a time and have an older machine that is a bit lazy. Thanks to both Toadsith and again badandy400.

I always download from and to the same drive, so it wouldn't be the transfer from one to another that causes the big post-World Wide Wait that I get with an occasional site.

I'm just going to have to train Firefox in my passwords and get on with that. By now I should be getting the message. ;) I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

It's been awhile since I switched somebody over, but the last time I did, Firefox automatically grabbed the bookmarks, history and passwords from IE - so the switchover might not be as painful as you are expecting :-)

On the other hand, I'd strongly recommend taking a serious look at Google Chrome - while Firefox has the advantage of years of Plug-Ins, Chrome has impressive speed and simplicity of use and the sheer momentum of Google backing it. With every update, Chrome finds more ways of out dating Firefox and rumor has it that plug-ins are coming to the browser very soon. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Probably not the problem but you may want to check that the hard drive you're saving to is not getting close to full. More specifically, that it doesn't need defragmenting. A badly fragmented drive can cause read/write slowdowns.

Also, if the noise is significantly more than the drive has been making in the past, it might be prudent to consider backing up that drive. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Thanks. It's got about 72 GB of space left (roughly 50%) and the last defrag was 2 weeks ago. And the noise level is "normal" for those secondary "download" events.

Actually, this machine has been having other kinds of problems just recently ("stop errors" that I can't seem to solve), but what I described at the start of the thread has always been the case.

Anyway, if I "disappear" for while, it will be due to this machine needing a fixup. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

That's right. IE downloads, then copies.

Great thread here - and thanks!!!
Had/have the same/similar problems as Drooler describes - and included two external harddrives thing are really getting "weird" in connection with downloads of different kinds - especially "mysterious" delays in spite of download manager.
And - BTW - when joining movie-files or extracting big zip-photofiles downloaded on one of the external harddrives - it takes forever..
So after reading the answers from Toadsith and badandy - I figure it primarily has to do with the external harddrives - or am I wrong...
Asked my pc if it wanted to defrag because of this, but it said no reason....so?
(from a certainly not very technical PU)

Denner, you may want to make a temporary folder on your main drive to save the files to when you initially download. Then move the file to the external at your leave. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Yes, I've done that too - but that's extra work and it also takes extra time, too - for this lazy user..he,he

Finally, as of today, my long "stop error" nightmare is finally over. It was a trojan that had the effect of 1. causing the machine to crash and crash again at various points of shutdown and restart, 2. causing Google search page results to link to the wrong links, 3. causing my anti-virus to be unable to update.

All of that shit finally went away with an update from Microsoft that finally came. And I'd been trying to access Microsoft's updates, just as with the antivirus, but the damn Trojan was preventing that, too.

Reminds of that old adage about death and taxes. Which reminds me of our banking system here in the US, collateralized debt obligations, and well ... can I find a sick bag, please? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.
