"Where have all the 4:3's gone"??

Instead of the ol': "Where have all the flowers gone" - I'd take the liberty to rephrase and ask here:

Where have all the 4:3 monitors gone??

I'm a fan - tried a couple of those widescreens monitors - but not to my liking - one's in the basement the other my wife enjoys.

Just love watching my porn on that old 4:3 - and keep searching for a new and even bigger one.

Been looking all over, but can't find any 4:3's - are they still out there in new productions?.......or are they "gone with the wind"? "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

4:3 monitors are still being produced primarily for businesses. The wider screens are of little use to someone viewing documents, so the industry still provides for these folks.

My 20 inch 4:3 Sanyo died 8 days out of warranty, and wanting a quick replacement, I opted for a wider model because a 4:3 would have to be ordered and shipped.

A 20 inch 4:3 is 12 inches high. You'll have to get a 24 inch 16:9 to get the same 12 inch height. Most businesses don't see this as economical. unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.

I was looking on a few computer store sites and to my surprise they do sell a few non-widescreen monitors. They seem to max out at around 19", which would be kinda small for a widescreen, but I guess it's decent for non-WS. Interestingly many look to be a 5:4 aspect ratio, which makes them slightly closer to a square than 4:3 monitors.

I'm a widescreen lover--great for lying-down landscapes and girl-girl toy sharing! "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I got so used to 16:9 through my LCD TV that a widescreen monitor doesn't bother me one bit. As a matter of fact I like to watch true HD videos a lot better this way. Just wish I had the money to upgrade from 20.5" to something like 24".

I'm an old-fashioned (?) 4:3 man m'self. I'm happy that my 4:3 tube is still running good. It just seems to correspond to the human visual field better that the "wide" types.

Let's keep 4:3 alive! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I do a LOT of writing documents and a widescreen monitor is amazing for it. 1920x1200 is brilliant for creating documents as I can have two full pages on screen side-by-side - much easier and faster than scrolling up and down to refer back to something on the last page. On top of that my monitor has the option of being turned through 90 degrees (ie portrait) so if anyone prefers to lose the width they can have height instead (just remember to rotate your desktop in Windows to match the screen!) Actually Drooler, I've seen articles stating widescreen fits more naturally with human beings' field of vision. Couldn't find any specific articles, but I seem to recall cnet having a piece on it years ago.

Personally I think it is just a matter of getting used to it, I find widescreen very useful at work as it is easier to look at documents side-by-side, and in my field of engineering documents are commonly in a 1.5:1 or so aspect ratio, so it can be easier to look at them full size on a widescreen monitor. About the only folks in my office that have 4:3 monitors these days are those with dual monitors, so they are just creating a sort of "super widescreen". Seems like two deals here - go for the wide screens and get use to it - or some of us old timers who have that thing about the time when monitor screens keeps getting bigger and bigger and still in that NICE 4:3.
I spend an entire Friday afternoon looking for somethings bigger that my good ol' 19" - and asking so called experts on the net.

The info was that almost no one makes them anymore - only special screens for call centers and office use. The biggest I could get - in Europe - was a 21,3" - and extremely expensive..this link is in Danish..BUT the price - it's somewhat over $ 1200 - crazy - when you can get an ok and big wide screen for $ 2-300.

So for 4:3 fans - take care of your monitor..........or surrender "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on May 29, 2011, 08:38am

Sometimes there's a fine line between objective reporting and making your financiers happy. Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I have euphemistically "special" vision, but it can't be both that it's natural and that it takes getting used to, can it?

I do understand your reasons for liking how they make documents readable side by side. I've got a wider screen at work (strangely enough) and it can be good for that.

But for video, I like 4:3 better for taking in the "whole" picture at once. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Well, even if something was originally less natural I could see it taking some time to get used to the more "natural" way.

There is so much widescreen content coming out, games, media, porn, that sooner or later you'll probably find that your aren't getting the whole picture anymore on 4:3. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Ouch! That sucks, because all the non-WS monitors I saw online were as cheap as current WS (all 19" or less though). "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Well, have you ever thought that what you're are used to now may not actually be natural? (BTW, always answer "Hell no!" when this question is asked in regards to your favorite weird porn fetishes.)

When working at a desk I'd prefer a wider monitor over a taller monitor any day. But at least, I hope, we all agree on a preference for flat screens over the desk-stressing CRT monstrosities of yesteryear. I just recently got rid of one and it was like lugging around a lead block with a power cable hanging out the back.

Yes, it was 4:3, but no, it was not working. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. CRT was built more for stationary use than for lugging. In spite of the "portable" 12-inch or smaller TV models from way back. Lol.

Sweating it out to get rid of that monitor made me think that since so many of the comparatively ultralight LCDs now have carrying handles that maybe the old CRTs were never intended to be moved...ever. It is oddly satisfying to smash an old tube TV or monitor but I was aiming to recycle it and therefore not break it into a thousand pieces (and I think they have lead in them, probably along with some other poisonous ingredients.)

The film and TV industry still use portable color-balanced CRTs for monitoring picture, supposedly as one of the last commercial users of such products. These are usually under 12" with rectangular metal cases and carrying handles since they are moved frequently. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A good quality CRT still gives a better reference quality picture than the vast majority of LCD screens as they are not affected by angle of view etc. That's why the TV industry use them. LCD and LED technology is always improving so it will only be a matter of time. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.
