rearadmiral -

What a coincidence that you put this story up right now. I'm in the same situation as you. Like you, I hate to delete anything and I also have a ton of drives, some dating back to the 90s. About a month ago I started going through the drives, making sure I had copies of everything on at least two offline drives and consolidating the data from the ancient 80, 120 and 250 gig drives to 2 terabyte drives.

My thoughts on it all? For one thing, don't slap the anal label on it. If it's a hobby for you, it's just that - a hobby, nothing more.

As far as the reliability of backup drives, I'm with you on the offline method. With thousands of hours (and a ton of money) wrapped up in my collection, I actually keep one set of drives in a safe. I tend to stay with 2 TB bare drives, using an eSATA dock to hook them up to the PC. Unlike the 3TB drives, I see them as time tested enough to have a reasonable expectation that they'll last. But, even when one does die (it's happened here), I still have a duplicate. I like bare drives over externals because of the cost factor. When I see a great sale on a drive I like, I jump on it even if I don't immediately need it. I just leave it in the box until I do.

Sites do disappear. Some also change what they keep on their servers, dropping their older content. I'm not saying that the heavy hitters you mentioned will suddenly drop out or change what they offer, but unless you have a direct line to the webmasters, you never know what they have planned for the future. To me it's a classic case of better safe than sorry. In the event that a site does disappear, it'd be a shame to have to say to yourself, "If only I'd saved it..."

For wiping out your data, I think every hard drive company has a utility to do a low level format and I'm pretty sure they're all available from the their websites. They all do the same thing - they write zeros to every bit on the drive, leaving it totally blank. There are also third party utilities you can use. I use one of the apps in Glary Utilities. Unlike some of the drive company utilities, it can be run right from Windows instead of from a CD at boot up. It also allows you to configure how many re-writes you want to do, further ensuring the erasure of the data. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I sometimes wonder about what the parents are thinking when they name their kids. I mean, if your last name is Cox, Hunt or Head, you've got to be really sadistic, really stupid or have a seriously bizarre sense of humor to name your child Richard. Most of the names are real. The more exotic names just reflect their heritage.

Haloti Ngata - Tongan descent
Lofa Tatupu - Samoan descent
Osi Umenyiora - Nigerian parents
Oshiomogo Atogwe - Nigerian parents
Paul Posluszny - Polish descent
Tshimanga Biakabutuka - From Zaire
Chris Fuamatu-Ma'Afala - Hawaiian
Obafemi Ayanbadejo - Nigerian father
Chad Ochocinco - legal name change from Johnson in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and to reflect his uniform number - 85. Since changed back to Johnson.

(Reveen - been to gamefaqs, I see LOL) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I can't tell you how nice it is to know that it's not just U.S. banks that are finding new ways to grab whatever money they can from their customers. Because of all the charges and fees, I haven't had a savings account in at least 15 years, a checking account in about 2 and no credit cards for about a year.

But here's one I don't think the banks have thought of yet. I almost got hit the other day by the cell phone people. Most Verizon stores have an ATM-like bill pay kiosk, some don't. Driving around town one day, I happened to be near a location that turned out to not have one, so I went to pay my bill at the desk. I was informed that there was a one dollar charge for paying in cash. At that point I totally lost any trace of tact. I said, "You've got to be fucking kidding me!", and walked out.

The fact that the drive is formatted to FAT32 tells me the drive is pretty old - I haven't seen an external formatted to anything but NTFS for years now. So, along with that and your explanation of what's going on, the best I can tell is that your MyBook is dying. Clunking noises aren't normal. I can't say I've ever heard of a hard drive (internal or external) directly affecting a wireless adapter, but I do know a slow hard drive can cause a general system slowdown. It causes the processor to have to work harder to access the files stored on it. If everything runs fine without it hooked up, I would recommend getting a new external as soon as possible to transfer all your files off the old drive before it goes completely bricked. It's more than a bit time consuming but, when the spam gets to be more than you care to deal with, there is something you can do. Forward the emails to agencies that crack down on spammers. The time consuming part comes in because you have to forward them with full headers. That means opening the email, clicking on whatever your particular email uses to show full headers, copying the header and pasting it in the body of the email before sending it. I personally send them to spam@uce.gov, but there are other places you can send them to. Google can help you find them.

After you've done this a few dozen times (maybe more?), sit back and watch your numbers. It won't happen overnight, but you should see a decrease in the amount of spam you get. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I bought a pair of red/cyan glasses at a local dollar store a bunch of months ago, not really thinking about why I wanted 'em - I guess I was thinking I'd have 'em in case I stumbled onto something 3D.
Turns out it was a pretty good purchase. They aren't heavy like those goggles but not flimsy like the cardboard versions. Yeah, it's a little gimmicky. The color rendering with cyan/red 3D is pretty weak, but the effect is interesting enough to make me think that whole big dollar was well-spent. What a coincidence that this topic came up. I'm in the middle of a major house clean out right now and came across 15 or so Mad books that I remember reading over and over again. Now the big question is whether to keep them for the nostalgia, reading 'em once again, then let 'em go back to collecting dust or try to sell them. Not sure I understand what you mean by that. Do you mean are the power supplies strong enough to safely run the drives? A very nice assessment of the state of things, Squirrel. I especially like the rant you stuck in there. "Don't try to trick me you fucking bastards". Amen!

I also like to see people talking about backing up their back ups. As I type this, I glance up at a stack of thirty some hard drives, wondering why I've spent so much money (and time!) on all these destined-to-fail devices. But, when I think about the files I've lost over the years, it reaffirms the need for the madness.

One last thing. Now that you've discovered the wonderful use for external drives, there's yet another step you can take. They're called hard drive docks. USB and/or eSATA devices you drop bare hard drives into. Bare drives are typically much cheaper then having to buy a drive in an enclosure. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Some things just never settle in my head. Without mentioning the names of the sites, (especially one I've long avoided and frequently spoken out on) it really makes no sense to me that people will go back, time and time again, to sites with known billing (and other) issues. The comment sections for some of these sites are full of the words like, 'beware', 'scam' and 'ripoff', and yet people still take the plunge.

Why?

I don't get it.

WHY DO IT?

Help me understand. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

From what I've read, the only thing Japan's laws say is that the uncensored porn is for export only. I am definitely surprised that they don't export more. With the exception of a prepaid card, insane banking fees are why I am now running on cash only. In the course of my bank being bought out by another bank, I expected some new fees to pop up. One that raised my eyebrows was a monthly fee just for maintaining overdraft protection. Even if I didn't use it, there was a fee? I went to the bank, spoke to a representative and told her I didn't want overdraft protection and wanted it removed. After about an hour and a dozen phone calls, I was told it would be removed from my account. Not one to believe much, if anything, from a corporation, I got it in writing.

The following month... surprise!!! (Not) There it was. The overdraft protection fee. I'd had enough and closed the account. For the next six months, I got a bill in the mail for the fee, despite the account being closed. Even after faxing a copy of the signed letter to them, they kept sending me a bill. It took getting just short of abusive on the telephone with various people to finally get them to give up. "Take me to court. I have a signed letter" seemed to finally do the trick.

The whole thing just makes me wonder how many people don't look at their statements close enough to catch crap like this. Or, how many people would have just given in and mailed them a check. With more and more people trying to reduce their debt, I'm sure the financial institutions are frantically trying to grab whatever bit of cash they can, anyway they can. I've never tried to play video directly on my television, but I do know from Windows experience that, in addition to the many different file types, every audio or video file requires a codec to play. If your system doesn't have the right codec installed, you won't get sound and/or a picture. Unfortunately, there are also different codecs that can be used to create a video file, .mp4 files included. The only thing I can think of that would keep your television from playing the files in question is that it can't read them. As an analogy, look at the iPods. They use a proprietary codec so that they only play on Apple hardware.

In case you don't know, codec stands for Compression/Decompression Module. In simplest terms, it's just software that is used to create and playback audio and video files. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I've given it some thought about whether or not I'm burnt out on reviews, too.

Let's see... I've done 27 reviews since 2007. I guess that's what happens when you basically join the same 4 or 5 sites over and over again. I don't see too many sites making radical changes that would warrant a new review. Then there are sites where I've joined but can't see doing a review because I couldn't add anything of value to the reviews already up on here.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not burnt out - I'm just in a rut. Happily so, but a rut nonetheless.

Advice for Denner:
Don't sweat it. Take a break. Don't feel compelled to write reviews and just sit back and enjoy the forum. When something does come along that strikes you as review-worthy, you'll know it and you'll write one. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Well I sure as hell couldn't resist chiming in on a rant.

There's no reality in reality porn any more than there's reality in reality TV. It's all scripted and turned out like it's on an assembly line. Quality be damned. To me, the women all look like they're tattooed to death, makeup-encrusted, fake tit carrying fuck machines. And I think the guys all look like they couldn't get laid if it weren't for the fact that the women are getting paid. They're either fat and greasy looking or musclebound jocks who fuck with steroid-induced anger. And, yeah, the abuse factor is a major turn-off! It's gonzo. It sucks.

I prefer a real reality, or at least something closer to it. They aren't all good looking, but amateurs will be "my thing" until the classic style of the 70's comes back. I guess that means forever - and I'm good with it. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

It's not as inconvenient as you might think. I solved that problem with an eSATA dock. Each drive is numbered and I have a master list of what's on each drive. Keeping a shortcut to the list on a Rocketdock icon, it takes me about a minute or less to find a particular drive and have it up and running.

Interestingly enough, I have to say that I've never researched the different RAID arrays to know that some configurations actually turn drives on and off. I don't know if I should thank you or curse you for giving me something else to mess with on a computer. I already spend an inordinate amount of time in front of the monitors. I'll just leave it this way - Thanks, damn it! Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I've often thought about going to a RAID solution, but I keep coming back to what I consider the simpler option - bare drives sitting on a shelf.

With a RAID array, you have to keep multiple drives running which generates more heat and draws more power from the power supply. A setup like that would mean I'd have to have 24 drives running full time and add more fans to keep it all cool. At that point, noise also becomes an issue. On top of that, I'd be into two power supply territory, even with the 1200 watt supply I already have. Still more noise and more money going out to the electric company.

I went online and bought a decent USB adapter that handles every major drive type and form factor. Hooked to a bare drive I simply copy over the files that I want to save, disconnect the drive and put it on a shelf. Done deal. Drives that don't run constantly don't burn out (so soon, anyway), don't waste power and don't generate heat or noise. It's also the cheapest way to backup a lot of data. Bare drives are cheaper than externals.

To me, the only drawback is that I don't get what amounts to the "instant copy" I'd get with a RAID array. I do have to be more conscientious about copying files. It's just become a habit with me to copy files as soon as I get a hold of something "keepable" - like at the end of a month's subscription or when I get a movie I know I'd hate to lose. I looked at the 164 sites listed on the Manwin's page and clicked on all the partner program links, and nothing I saw made me think, "Yeah, I might join that". I think that's very likely to become a past tense statement. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I don't know how many people look at the different types of drives when considering a new purchase. For instance, Western Digital has blue, green and black series. The black is optimized for performance, are noisier than the others and use a lot of power. The blue is for general use, with a good balance of performance, power consumption and noise. The green is designed to use as little power as possible and make as little noise as possible, with some sacrifice of performance.

I bring this up here because the cheaper drives, from WD and other manufacturers, usually fall into the "green" category like I just mentioned - and they typically, at least in my experience, turn up with errors and complete failures before the more performance-rated drives.

Any of you drive junkies have any thoughts or similar experiences with this? Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on Sep 08, 2012, 11:43am

It can't be all that popular - otherwise there'd be hundreds of names for it. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Denner - have you tried uninstalling IDM and going back to the last version that didn't give you problems?

I think just about everybody has run into something like this before. Something in an update puts a glitch in the registry and... well... problems result. I'm a firm believer in that newer isn't always better. Before I update a program or install new software, I use my backup app to make an image of my system drive. That way, if I've updated or installed something that starts giving me problems, and reverting back to an earlier version doesn't help, I have a copy of a stable operating system. WD 2 TB Caviar Black WD2002FAEX - $144.49 on Amazon right now. Pretty good for a drive that was $220 a few weeks ago.

Edit:
And, just like that, the drive went up to $168.54. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on Aug 26, 2012, 01:13am
