I'm sure you know that just because it's free doesn't mean it's bug-ridden. And I know everyone's PC has it's own quirks, but I've had more problems with some paid for apps because they're so bloated. Free apps - especially open source, on the other hand, usually have had a lot of people working on them to work out the bugs. And they rarely, if ever, install anything but themselves. The Open Office Suite is a good example. It allowed me to get rid of M$ Works altogether and I no longer have to deal with Microshaft installing the Works Calendar Reminder that you have to go through a bunch of crap to keep from writing itself back to the autostart menu.

Some of the programs people have posted here are now in my folder of keepers and it might surprise you how handy they are. Unless you're running a dinosaur operating system like me (Windows 2000), at least you've got system restore in the event of trouble. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I've never expected much from bonus content. Half the time I can't even get into the sites 'cuz the passwords don't work or there's some issue with cookies that I won't allow. Come to think of it, the only bonus content I've ever saved came from a signup at AllOver30 - and there wasn't much of that either. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Those are some good choices, exotics - especially having the wife's pic in the mix.

As far as the talking popups are concerned, if you're using Firefox and don't know about it, there's an extension called NoScript that stops most of those things. Obviously, since I do get hit from time to time, it's not 100%, but it does keep most of the crap at bay. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I'm not sure I understand what you would you call video editting then. Conversion isn't editting? And, with this program, you don't necessarily have to compress the output. I've set the bitrate the same, or even a bit higher than the original, and there's no apparent loss of quality. Maybe it's because I didn't mention it specifically, but one of the filters gives you the ability to chop out whatever you don't want. You can cut out the scene where you caught Aunt Bertha picking her nose at your daughter's wedding. That fixes the wedding video and you can put Aunt Bertha's special moment up on YouTube. Like you said, there are plenty of videos out there that are way too long. It's done wonders on some of the videos from one of the last sites I commented on here. As an example, I took a 250 meg file with over 10 minutes of fluff and turned it into a 4 minute, 60 meg file of "the good stuff". I've also used this on a bunch of 70's classic porn flicks, brightening the picture, correcting the colors, cutting out the noise lines and black bars in the original VHS rip and, in some cases, correcting a distorted aspect ratio.

I don't know... That all looks like editting to me. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

• There's about 2 dozen filters for manipulating picture and sound quality, with most of those filters having several options of their own.
• There are output options galore with both video and audio file types and the quality thereof.
• Does batch conversions.
• Makes slideshows with and without sound.

All in all, it's just about options, options, options and how easy it is to use. The interface is fairly intuitive and I find I can do a lot of things with Tmpgenc that I can't do with other programs. I'm really not one of those people I (respectfully) call a videogeek. I don't know how to write too many scripts like you have to do with programs like Avisynth and there's still a bunch of stuff in Virtualdub that I still can't make heads or tails of. There's still more for me to learn even with Tmpgenc - but even with what I already know, the final products from my editting already look and sound better than anything I'd done before. To me, a hundred dollars isn't all that much for a product that actually works and works well. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

First, the freebies:

Even though it's been called outdated, I still use DVD Decrypter to help when ripping DVDs to avi.
http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ (You'll have to manually copy and paste this link - it doesn't seem to be posting right)

The name is a bit misleading, but I use a program called Cdrom List Creator to make lists of files in folders and on drives.
http://www.leeos.com/cdrom_list_creator.html

When working with pictures, I use Colorcop to grab a pixel's color code. It gives you both RGB and hex codes
http://colorcop.net/

For grabbing flash video, I use Orbitdownloader.
http://www.orbitdownloader.com/

For converting flash video, among a couple of other programs I have, I use All2Avi.
http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/

Every once in a while I like to clean up my favorites folder. AM Deadlink looks for dead links and duplicates
http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm

You have to be somewhat of a Videogeek to make full use of it, and I have to admit I'm not up to using it to it's full potential, but Avisynth is the only way I know to make a video run in reverse.
http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page

Open pdf files faster and without the mildly annoying splashscreen that you get with Adobe using the Foxit Reader
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Clonespy finds duplicate files to save drive space. Majorly configurable with all kinds of filters.
www.clonespy.com

For renaming files and folder en masse, I love Jim Wilsher's Bulk rename Utility
http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

Stuff I've paid for and never regretted:

Tmpgenc 4.0 xpress. By far, the best video editor I've used to date. Heavy on system resources, but the options and ease of use make it a gotta have to me.
http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html

ImageDupeless scans for and shows you duplicate pictures. There is a free version that has limitations but I liked the program enough to buy it.

Now that's timing. A couple days ago, I was thinking about starting this thread. Today, I saw Colm4 started a poll about desktops. So it turns out I'm not the only one curious about peoples' desktops.

There is a free codec identifier available here
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
It will tell you what codec(s) were used to create the files.

You could also try a different media player. VLC plays just about anything without the need to mess with codecs.
It's also free, available here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I'd always thought the extra cost to join with a non-recurring membership was just for people who don't want to have to worry about remembering to cancel. That, or maybe there's some thought to minimizing email contacts to try to hide a sign-up from a "potentially concerned third party" like the wife or the boss. (In some cases, I guess they could be one and the same.) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Unfortunately, with the state of business today, where it's more like trying to grab money by any means necessary rather than offer any real product or service, this is just the kind of thing that brings up the old adage, "Caveat emptor - Buyer beware!". I won't say I always read entire User Agreements when I go to sign up on a new site, but I definitely look for things like prechecks and the little security symbol in my browser before inputting personal information. If something does look out of place, but the site's content looks promising enough, then I will read the entire agreement and carefully check what all I'm clicking to see what's what. I forget what site it was, but there was one I wanted to sign up for but they weren't using encryption on the page where you enter your name, address and email. I sent them an email, asking why there was no encryption. I never got a response, so it was a just a no-go. Their loss. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I couldn't begin to post an all inclusive list of comedians I like. Reading this thread, I see there'd always be someone I missed.

Let's add another flavor to this thread - comedians you can't stand. It surprised me that no one's mentioned Howard Stern. Ever the one to go against popular opinion, I wish he'd just disappear already. It only took a couple of months of listening to him back in the late 80's to realize that he isn't funny. He's done the same "let me see your boobs" humor year after year after year. It got old real quick here.

It surprised me that I don't like Dave Chappelle. I noticed that I'd see him on TV and I just wasn't laughing. Every time I try to give him another chance and watch something he's done, I just don't laugh. So, I think it's safe to say he don't do it fer me. Yeah - I am forever, first and foremost, a Carlin fan. For current comedians, here's my list.

After that, my number one is Lewis Black 'cuz he rants my rants. He's angry like I'm angry. Next, Jeff Dunham for taking ventriloquism to a new level. Frank Caliendo - one of the best celebrity impersonators I've ever heard. And I love Rodney Carrington - kind of an X-rated Jeff Foxworthy. For the rest of the list, including past and present comedians, there's Wanda Sykes, Ralphie May, Robin Williams, Ron White, Eddie Izzard, Bill Maher, Victor Borge, Lisa Lampanelli, Richard Pryor (of course?), Flip Wilson, Sam Kinison and Steven Wright.

All in all, I'd have to say, the more sarcastic and cynical they are, the more bite they put into their act, the more I like 'em. But I also like what I guess you'd call storytellers - that's how G and PG rated guys like Victor Borge and Flip Wilson make it to my list of otherwise R rated performers. Skinvideo currently shows 2092 videos listed under Ebony. Of course, when it comes to that site, you have consider that a portion of that number includes scenes broken down into clips. Still a good number of flicks up, but that's one of the few things I don't like about SV - when doing a search, you'll see things like Movie Z and Movie Z Clip 1, Movie Z Clip 2... 3... 4... Since I don't allow myself to be bound by the constraints of being politically correct, I have to say that the world is a better place without the likes of Michael Jackson in it. Was he talented? Yeah... A great performer. But, whatever it was that plunged him into the world he created for himself is no excuse for doing the things he did. As might be expected, there are a lot of online conversations and arguments going on about MJ now and I've been told that, because he was a United States citizen, he was innocent until proven guilty. But, as I see it, admitting to sleeping with children would've had anyone else locked up. Stupid acts like swinging your infant child over a balcony would've had your child taken away from you by the authorities. Celebrity shouldn't buy you special rights.

Farrah, on the other hand, I'll remember fondly. Like JD said, people my age will always remember what she meant to the 70s and 80s. (Yeah, I had that poster, too) With cancer having done it's deed so often in my own family, my heart goes out to her family and those close to her. Badandy's right. It reminds me of a stunt I pulled on this one seriously homophobic guy I used to work with. The crew was sitting at a table in the cafeteria when I came walking in drinking a vanilla milkshake. I walked up to the table with my cheeks puffed out and spit a mouthful of milkshake onto a plate and said, "Fucking blowjobs taste horrible!" It had the desired effect - the homophobe couldn't finish eating and left the cafeteria. All that to say, yeah, maybe as a prank. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Now I'm really curious how you're doing this. If you run the multipliers and/or controller cards in RAID, you lose real estate. If you run JBOD, you rack up drive letters and, to the best of my knowledge, once you hit drive Z, you're done.

I might be next in line with drive space - with my externals running, I'm sitting at drive T for a total of 11.2 TB. And I'm getting a bit nervous because I'm coming up on that dreaded Z. My system is old and the majority of my drives are still IDE which, unfortunately, no one is making anything larger than 500 gigs anymore - and even those are getting scarce. To continue as I have in the past, buying drives as needed, I have two choices. With all my PCI slots filled already, I can either continue with USB externals, which I hate because they're horribly slow, or upgrade my motherboard to something that'll handle a bunch of SATA drives. That also means upgrading my video card, memory, CPU and fan. And I definitely don't have the money to do that anytime soon. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Anyone else using Firefox have to scroll down to where you were on a page when you hit the back button? The best I can tell from Googling the problem is that either my browser needs upgrading, or it's in the coding of the site. If it's a site issue, I'd just as soon leave my browser alone - I don't always go for "new and improved" when old and lousy works just fine. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

For speakers, I'm a big fan of Creative Soundworks systems. My satellite/subwoofer system is about 15 years old and looks like the first generation Bose Acoustimass system. I compared the two side by side and, considering the Creatives were less than 2/3rds the cost of the Bose and sounded the same, I went with the Creatives. I just checked their website and, even though my system is long gone from their catalog, I'd say their lineup looks just as promising. Check out their Newton series. This is kind of funny... I'm still on Windows 2000, so a lot of things like mbaya's hint of hovering over an icon don't work here. But, after all these years of collecting video, I just found out you can right click on a video file and select the summary tab and it gives you all kinds of info.

So, messmer, I'll also thank you for posting this question! I learned something myself today. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I don't know about other players, but here's what to do with the ones I use:

In Media Player Classic you can right click on the video window and select Properties then the Details tab.

In VLC you can click on Tools at the top, then Codec Information, then the Codec Details tab.

In Winamp, you can double click on the file name in the main window and it will pop up the properties in a window. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Okay... maybe to get the ball rolling... and without a real price range in mind... I've always seen Kenwood and Yamaha as good bang for the buck brands. For the last 25 years or so, I've upgraded the components to a Kenwood and Yamaha system that still rattles the walls. It's not top end by any means - but the neighbors still complain like it is. I have to disagree with one thing that GCode said. Unless something changed in the last year or so, turntable outputs aren't up to the same level other components are - that's why I mentioned the turntable with preamp. I know you can buy more expensive units, but the one I bought was around $30 and it does quite well for ripping. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I'm not exactly sure what you're after here. A complete stereo system with a turntable? If that's the case, your options are only limited by your budget. It'd be hard to recommend anything unless we know how much you're willing to shell out. I would definitely suggest you do a lot of online shopping/comparisons. Also read user reviews for anything you're leaning towards.

If you've got serious budget concerns, and your computer soundcard has a line in jack, I would just go get a decent turntable and preamp so you can digitize the vinyl. That gives you the option to listen on the computer, load up mp3 players or make discs to play in any existing CD players you have. But even that setup depends on what kind of money you have to spend. If you do go this route, I can tell you that you might want to avoid the USB turntables - none of 'em I've seen have gotten good reviews. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I've been using it for years, so I second Toadsith's recommendation of Window Washer. There are options to overwrite deleted data up to 35 times and it'll also "wash" open spaces on your drives that might contain data from previous deletions. There are also configurable plugins to delete data from dozens, if not hundreds, of common programs. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

It is prohibited - but some people probably need it spelled out in greater detail than what's in the rules.

Curious if your download manager also grabs Adobe 10 streams that use rtmp. I've tried half a dozen "grabbers" and have yet to find one that'll grab 'em. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I admit it - I used an online translator to try to put a little color into my post. So I blame http://www.translation-guide.com/free_on...nglish&to=Danish for the error :laughs: Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I believe you call it "gennemsnit opvakthed" in Denmark. Here, it's "average intelligence". All it means is, for every super intelligent person you cross paths with, there's someone on the other end to balance things out. It's not worth the effort to try to figure out why someone would blatantly steal a review. It'd be like trying to figure out why people still try to rob banks. 80 cameras all over the place... no mask on... and they wonder why they get caught. Brilliant!

I think that'd be giving him too much credit for thinking. I'd figure he'd try to come back with something like "moreofpat" Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on May 23, 2009, 09:54pm

I just now saw this thread and I have to say it - Toadsith, you are one sick man! ::BIG laugh:: But that is one awesome guideline you've put together. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Just a small correction to the site Cybertoad mentioned. www.oldversionS.com takes you to a search site. www.oldversion.com is a site that has all kinds of... well... old versions of software. Usually better than the current incarnations if you ask me... Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

It's kind of funny you mentioned that. I've always thought there should be a masturbation niche - but there isn't one! Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.
