I just saw this the other day when I was checking around their tour pages. I was thinking of rejoining but now I don't know--I find all this BTS shit to get irritating, plus the last thing I want to see on ALS is boy-girl material. I always trusted them to be reliably boner-free, but now I have to look somewhere else.
Did Alex say anything in his blog about why they are putting this on their site? On the preview page for the release they said "Trust me, you don't want to miss this one of a kind treat!" but I bet there are more than a few members who could care less. It seems that by now they would have more than enough of their own material to not have any reason to post this stuff from a Club Sandy shoot.
Yes, great review! I am glad you are enjoying the site, hopefully based on some of my responses to your inquiries a few weeks back. :) I usually hate proselytizing, but I make a serious exception for ALS (okay, and most porn, but I prioritize my preaching for ALS!).
One of your cons mentioned one of my peeves -- voting. Goddamnit, a porn site should not be a democracy! It needs to be run by a qualified perverted tyrant who will just go ahead and release everything, and in order. But seriously, I remember some models, even ones from the last few years, with very little content due simply to not having the votes. I don't want to sound like Norm Coleman, but can we have recount? Just so we can see their material, please?
They do have some of the best photography and videography out there, at least in terms of using good equipment and proper setup, and then choosing models that will not require excessive Photoshopping. I wish other sites would take a hint, and try making their photography and models look a little more real, but they'll probably never learn.
Well, as far as extreme spreading goes, it really depends on the model, but yes, generally they do it with fingers, not just toys and "devices". I would say about 90 to 95% of models use a speculum, and a few just choose not to, but the vast majority of them do use it in at least one scene. They all use toys (who doesn't?) and fingers, though I would say toys and other insertables get the maximum effect for the "quick pullout" shots they like to get, that is, where they get a temporary gape. :) And they love fisting, though that seemed to be tapering off slightly when I was last a member (December '08), but there is still plenty of it there.
As far as ALS Scan vs ALS Angels goes, yes, it is pretty much petite (regular ALS) vs thick and busty (Angels), but it is a subtle difference unless you are into breasts. Older models -- say, from 1990s through early 2000s -- with big breasts (C and up) are on ALS, but after that, they are primarily all on Angels. A few of these Angels girls made it to the regular site for some girl-girl shoots and an occasional Caribbean trip -- like Carli did for their 2007 Caribbean trip -- but they stay mostly on ALS Angels.
If you haven't been a member of either, and big breasts, or lack thereof, aren't a big deal, then I would recommend ALS Scan first. Yes, it is five dollars more, but there is so much more content there, due to archiving that goes way back, plus most of their content goes there, so they have more regular updates.
I hope this helps, but I haven't been a member in seventh months :( so maybe starting a comment and asking for a second opinion would give you a better idea, as I am sure some of our regulars are current members.
I agree with you here, even if "chaotic" is not the right word; maybe "non sequential" is a better term.
I would like them to at least once -- just once is all I ask -- select a new model, without previewing her to members, and release all of her material, and in order. And all of it would be released within a short time period, say a month, no ifs, ands, or buts. Then, since everything seems to be based on what members say, see if this even popular, or if they should just stick with the current system.
Personally, it is one of my pet peeves concerning the site. I know I didn't mention in my review a year ago, but I did when I reveiwed ALS Angels, where they do the exact same thing. I just know there is more material out there, because the webmasters say there is, and some models have little content posted, but I also know all of it won't necessarily get released anytime soon, if ever. I understand they want to please the majority of members, and therefore what and who wins the most votes will see the light of day, or members' area of the site (no wonder I hate democracies...), but it's got to be irritating if you always vote for models/scenes that don't make the cut, so to speak.
I am afraid I am part of that 1% (if even that) that you mentioned, so don't worry, you're not alone here. I also miss their somewhat harder stuff, rather than the focus on glamor and tease, among other things.

Actually, I really don't care about director's previews. In fact, they can make for some pretty hot photos. I just don't like it when there's a nice, relaxing solo masturbation video, and then some guy starts talking (and, really, who likes all the background talking?) and walks in.
Yeah, I emailed him and told him I wrote it. I sort of figured it would get posted, since he mentioned it last Friday.
Alex's response is what I was expecting, and ALS is proud of what they shoot, as well as how they do it (as they should be). If they weren't, all the girls they continue to select might not still be as shaved and hot as the ones were when they first started in the '90s.
I don't really mind lollipops and the things models do with them as long as they do not do it too much, or with every single model. She has a lollipop, alright, now move on.
I also forgot to mention the "meal" scenes, where a model "eats" a meal -- usually breakfast -- and spills something on herself or inserts some utensil handles; it is just too dumb and repetitive for me, and every one of these scenes ends up looking the same.
I love this site and what it produces, but they have been doing some things in the last few months that need to be changed:
1. No more guys in photos or videos. They used to be pretty good about this, but now with "full" photoset releases (bloopers and outtakes included) they also have the occasional male assistant in some photos. I understand they work for the site and therefore help make it what it is, but I don't think it would too hard to keep them truly behind the scenes, or at least out of frame.
2. Cut down on the lollipops and baby oil. Lollipops and baby oil have been used by a lot of their models since the '90s, but they seem to really overdo it now. At most, they should only have one scene with a single lollipop or baby oil.
3. "Guest" photosets and videos. These are pretty rare, but I am not sure why they are there, maybe for some promotion agreement. They have only been from 1By-Day, usually with ALS models, but bottom line: it is just not ALSScan.
There are some great things they have been doing lately, and they need to keep it up:
1. New HD vid format. They now release new vids in an additional 1920x1080 wmv format – huge files, but huge videos…very nice.
2. Classic model remasters. These are great, especially since older releases were pretty limited in quantity and quality compared to today.
3. Hard with the soft. They might just be a girls-only site, but their hardcore is just as hot as the soft, and hopefully they won’t stop shooting it.
This is one of my favorite sites too, navigation aside. Their videos, including older standard definition, still look great, as well as the newer photos.
I do wish they would redesign some things though. Personally, I am not a big fan of everything being included in a single photoset (outtakes, goofs, etc.). I understand that this makes it much easier to download content, but it also just adds a lot of junk to downloads.
For example, their newest photoshoot releases are quite large, but it ends of being a lot of sloooow stripping and unnecessary shots with the male assistants in the frame. I like seeing just the model, not the dudes sweatin' between her legs with the camera and lights.
On the other hand, going through their older material (say pre-2000), and there is not enough content. Most of their earlier models are just as attractive as their current talent, but they have not released many of their photos or videos to prove it.
I am huge fan of Alsscan too but I am afraid you are probably right on some of these points.
1. It does seem slightly less extreme lately, but it's hard to tell if it really turns out to be softer content in the long run. Franziska is a good example; yes, she is really hot, and Alex says she is really popular but I have just not been interested, regardless of the braces or tan lines or whatever people thought was interesting. No fisting, not even a speculum scene (at least that I am aware of) -- pointless indeed.
I think it may be an excess of the fluff content rather than a lack of hardcore content that’s the problem. By this I mean all the cars, candy, and glamour shots they have started adding. If I wanted to see cars I would look on a car site, and the lollipops seem to be what everyone else is doing as well so it gets boring fast. The softer or glamour shots can be a little much sometimes and I think this was mentioned in relation to ALS Angels and in response they were adding some more establishing shots before a model goes straight for the toy or insertion. This is fine but it quickly adds a lot of boring repetitive stuff, especially now that they release a whole scene at once, including all bloopers and outtakes.
2. I disagree here, to me they release new models (or rerelease archived material) frequently enough, especially considering how big a release usually is, but...
3. ...I do wish they would release the majority of a model's shoot within 6 to 9 months. I hate it when there are random releases from a model they shot more than a year ago, then only to say "well, she wasn't very popular so we didn't release any of her stuff." I understand it can be hard to agree on whom, or what scene, is really the most popular -- even with a voting system -- but it is frustrating to see something on a promo page but nowhere else simply because a model is "unpopular."
This is still a great site and I think it can remain that way with a few tweaks to the formula.
Almost forgot about Zoe -- hot, nasty, and willing to try almost anything and actually enjoy it! I think she was actually on an episode of The Wonder Years 10 years before she showed her dirty side for ALS. They shot her again in their New Orleans shot doing girl-girl, and then again for one of their Jamaica trips, though by that time she had shorter hair and "enhanced" breasts.
The site's having another models poll, this time from their early models (1996 - 2001). This brings backs a lot of memories of when I first learned of this site and became an instant fan, and they have only gotten better! I am sure anyone who was a member that far back can't wait to see who they remaster next.
Their older models are sometimes hit and miss (possibly because ALS was not so well known), but quite a few stand out; Michelle, April, Monica, Nicole...the list goes on. Most of them were unknowns then and stayed that way, a few went on to do movies, but none of them were "stars" when ALS shot them so it gave them a sort of freshness compared to now when models appear on dozens of sites at the same time.
Apparently some of them don't have any video, though I am not sure which ones, and the photos are scanned from prints, but there are still plenty of hot classics to be found.
(By the way, was anyone ever a member of Kathryn Lee's or Mia Tyler's individual member sites? None of this material has ever ended up on ALS's sites so it would be cool to see it eventually released.)
I couldn't agree more; no direction can equal a good video. Usually it's just the model looking at camera, then talks to herself, "finds" toy under pillow/seat cushion, proceeds to orgasm, goodbye wave. Sometimes this can be pretty cool, like the Amy Lee/ Kacey Jordan fistin' and pumpin' scene, but it was a big relief to see videos without the director's constant influence (minus the goofy male assistants, a growing problem).
Their older stuff looks, well, older, but it's not too bad really. It's interesting seeing videos that have never been released, even if they are all photoshoot/BTS. Definitely collector's material, especially compared to the HD quality of current releases.
I am personally looking forward to Joanne's upcoming rerelease since I still own a video and CD of hers from the late '90s (yes, I've been an ALS fan for 10 yrs...time flies).
Their newest photos are supposedly even better and more HD than stuff from a few months ago since they got a new camera. I have only noticed this on hi-res versions of photos, and only ones that are close-ups; wide shots look the same.
The '08 Caribbean shoot is looking pretty good so far, and most of last year's tropics shoot has been released, which by itself is almost worth a month’s subscription. The HD videos are more focused on masturbation than BTS and photoshoot than older ones but tons of selection
Yeah, I'll have to check it out some time. The thing I hate about ALS Scan is when the director's blog talks about a really hot model and then ends with saying she's going to be released on the Angels site instead. Frustrating, but it's hard to ignore some of the models, especially when they're included in regular ALS shoots (like Carli in their Caribbean '07 shoot).
Yeah, this wasn't the greatest bonus ever, but it's a good trend. Jana was one of their earlier models, and though she already had quite a bit of photos on the site, remastering it was an improvement. The videos were just too boring though (a lot of photoshoot and BTS), plus I wish they had had her shave earlier (it is All Ladies Shaved!), or remastered her shoot as a brunette. Oh well, can't wait for some of the other old models to be released.

Bottom Line:
If you're into young, totally shaven girls who are willing to get nasty in front of a camera, then ALS Scan could easily become your new friend. This site shoots some very hot girls, many who have never done any porn or modeling prior, and a few who haven't done any since (that's exclusive!). The focus here is not just quantity, but quality, and new pics are offered in two sizes (around 1300x1000 and 3000x2000), usually with good lightning and crystal clear resolution. New videos are also in big, clear HD (1280x720). The owner/photographer doesn't mess around, and models are quickly undressed and lubed up in the scenes, with lots of toys, fisting, speculum, along with some models who pee, or do some anal; but only what they are comfortable doing, and it pays off in the photos.
My only gripes would be that the videos can get boring, and the newer ones feel too forced if they are masturbation. Yeah, it’s porn, but their older vids would just introduce the model and let her go from there. The owner also frequently talks, even in the masturbation vids, and his voice can be quite annoying, and downright creepy (a frequent complaint by other users). They are also finally putting their old design out to pasture, but the new one isn't perfect (no searching, you can still end up doing a lot of clicking). But the content more than makes up for these things, and as older material is being rereleased and updated, you'll probably end up quite satisfied.
It sucks when such beautiful talent gets wasted on a site like this. While I can't blame him for getting all these girls, I would rather see a site that isn't another dude's self-congratulatory tribute to his conquest of a lot of hot women.
POV is nice every once in a while, but a whole site, with the same swordsman and setting, is like you are just getting access to his home video collection. There is no variety, in the action or girls, and it is boring and routine.
That tiny download limit, plus that awful sample video, will keep me far, far away from this site.

I agree this is one of the better rear entry action sites out there, considering how widespread spreading the ass wide open is (I think I picked up too much wit from your review ;) ). I also think it's one of the better sites of the 21st Sextury network, especially with all the hardcore action going on at the other sites. Zoliboy now has a lot of boy-girl hardcore but it's not always anal and has its own crazy fetishes to fulfill as well.
I don't get the way they do photos either; they are obviously professionally shot and high quality except that they are so tiny. I don't think any site should release photos (besides thumbnails) that are smaller than their current video resolution and should really makes them significantly bigger.
