I have to write down those random passwords and hope I get the caps and numbers right. It's easier for me to pick my own password.

I second what merc wrote and add that if by some fluke the website does not email me a confirmation of their password than I'm screwed trying to log in to the site.

I prefer random passwords. It keeps me from having to create a password. Random passwords, however, are usually less secure than the passwords I create. But it keeps me from wasting time creating a secure, unique password.

I AGREE WITH MERC77.
IT'S EASIER TO PICK MY OWN PASSWORD RATHER THAN TRYING TO REMEMBER SOME RANDOM GENERATED PASSWORD.

I just let the site pick a password and then store it in the browser. I'm rarely on a site for more than a month anyway so it's just easier than making up new passwords every time I rejoin a site.

No matter how you do it, managing passwords is a pain. First choice is always to use my own, but even that is a challenge sometimes. And if the billing service doesn't send a confirmation email, then they go off my list of acceptable services.
I agree that it shouldn't matter if your browser keeps track, but not all sites allow the browser to keep the PW.
