Ditto merc77. The only times I'll turn the sound on is when there's some chatter at the beginning and when the babe is dancing.

If the music distracts from the other sounds or from the action than it's a huge problem.

Clearly it's not a question of how often, but of what kind of music it is.
As others have said, if it's ambient, it's probably OK. I hate loud pulsing techno. Let the performers do the pulsing.
No background music at all is even better, though.
