I use AdBlock Plus so even if there are ad's, I don't see them. But on principle I hate them, once I have paid for something I dont expect to have ad's for other products shoved in my face.
Which brings me nicely to a pet peave of mine, the popup ad's that are all the rage on TV shows now. When you pay god knows how much per month to watch your favourite shows on premium cable tv not only do you have to put up with ad breaks every 5 minutes but also while the show is playing upto a third of the screen is taken up with advertising. Now that REALLY pisses me off.

I also have Adblock Plus, so I also don't see them. But they don't really bother me on a well designed website, because they are placed in ways that I can just ignore them.

A few are OK.
Sometimes a site is offered at a better price than even PU offers. Sometimes a site I'd never heard of shows up.
But what really irrigates me (pisses me off) is when an ad is disguised as part of the content and sends me to a signup page.

I've seen a few sites where the ads are plastered all over the page, and they take up as much space as the site contents you are paying for. That is ridiculous.

I only have a problem if more than a quarter of the members page is taken up by ads or if they are those that keep popping up whenever you return to the main page. I'd rather not see any except in a specially reserved section of the site but I can appreciate the need to make extra money so that you can keep your sites price down.

I don't like them mostly because you rarely see good deals (better than a TBP special). However, I can understand seeing a few, especially if they are marketing other sites owned by the company.
I disagree with Pat's analysis that the ads are keeping subscription prices down. I think most sites charge what they think the going rate is regardless of how much money they make from advertising (Does the price of Coca-Cola drop after a successful ad campaign?).

I hate them, but if they are kept to just the welcome/opening page then it's okay, or for a sister site that's owned by the same company, but otherwise I get pissed since I have paid for the site, not advertising.

REPLY TO #6 - Wittyguy :
Wouldn't the price of Coca-Cola go up, since they have to pay for all that promotion? Considering they are the planet's most ubiquitous brand I would imagine they spend a pretty penny to maintain their lead in the market.

Depends on the content. If the site produces the best content out there, then what the fuck do I care if they make a few extra bucks with ads? More money in their hands is more that could go towards new material.
But if the site's content sucks ass, then the ads piss me off.
Suppose I'm saying content is king, ads who cares?

I normally hate as and AdBlocker is my best friend. But I have to admit that ads sometimes do introduce you to a new site.
Inside a members area though, I say keep it to a minimum. It might be true that membership fees don't pay all the bills theses days so I understand if webmasters but an ad or two in the members area.
Just don't trick us into thinking ad for external sites are content. And no annoying/persistent ads or video.

Don't mind a few soo much, it's when it interfers or causes confusion when trying to navigate the website.

I don't like 'em at all. But I know they're as inevitable as the commercials on cable television. I must be old - I remember when cable came out, one of their selling points was "commercial free!"

hate them, because we paid to see what we wanted. now, with that said, if they decide that what they are advertising comes with the membership. then that would be a different story. :)

I don't mind a couple, especially if there's a promotional price involved.
MET, for instance, has gone a bit overboard with them, though. They put them on just about every thumbnail page now, and they're hard to ignore. I use ABP and it doesn't help with them.
