That sucks about your hard drive, badandy. I am sure all the regular members share in your loss, especially considering your reputation for collecting. Hope you replace/repair it soon. Yup it sucks. It is not so much an issue of the inconvenience and small cost of sending the drive in to have it replaced, but more the loss of all the data on the drive. It takes a long time to download that much. Plus it takes a lot of manual input to download and organize all that. Especial since I have been much more picky about renaming things lately.

Worst of it is trying to figure out what was actually lost. I know there was a lot of video box on there which sucks but I can live with, that site is cheap and mindless to download from. I am not sure what, if any, smaller sites where stored on there. Even though there was a lot of Videobox on it and it is easy to download there stuff it still presents a problem of figuring out exactly what videos were lost. This will take an extreme amount of effort. Yeah, I love the chase as much as the catch, but when you have a lot of catch you kind of don't want to have to chase it all over again. After all the swearing, I don't know what I would do if one of my hard drives failed. The recovery fees I have see are ridiculous -- more than a new hard drive and all the memberships required to refill them -- plus, I bet they would just keep copies of all my data/porn for themselves.

I wonder if you could disassemble the drive and install the platters in a new drive. I am sure it as least physically possible, but you probably wouldn't be able to read any data anyway. This can be done, but it more likely to simply replace the defective parts in the drive. I would concider this and there are kits out there to do exactly this, but they are a little expensive too (several hundred dollars) and require practice. Also, this would void my warranty on the drive which is only about 6 months old. I UPSed the drive yesterday anyway, so it is too late now. I just need to find a way to figure out what was on that drive, that is the main thing and I think I am screwed on that detail.

The biggest thing I need to do is hurry up and get a RAID 5 setup. Thiis would go a long way to preventing this sort of issue. Only problem with a raid 5 is if I ever needed to run some sort of recovery it would a total pain and would require a much larger amount of space to get it done. I love dredging the thread up every now and then. It has been over a year so I guess it is time again. I am always curious to see what fellow porn addicts use and I have even learned a thing or two from them. Since I have been back I have seen some new people here, well at least new to me. This is a great little place to brag shamelessly about your stuff.

So here is a fresh list of what I have, or at least have on order right now. I am including all of them.

1x60 GB
1x250 GB
1x120 GB
1x300 GB
2x400 GB
6x320 GB
12x500 GB
8x750 GB
4x1000 GB
29x1500 GB

Totaling 62.7 TB

I also got new internet today. My 3 MBit DSL is now a 16 MBit cable connection. I know I still have not match the Library of Congress, but damn it I am trying! Otherwise not much else has changed with my computer setup in the past year. I kind of miss the simpler times when personal computers were the new thing. I had many wonderful years playing with my Apple IIc computer. The first time I bought a joystick to play games on it was amazing. Said joystick was a small box with a stick that was used with a finger and thumb plus one action button. A big game would have required a couple of 5 1/4 disk which had to be swapped from time to time. Long live the Brown Coats.

Your Tandy 1000 package includes:

- The main unit, which contains the CPU with 128K RAM, one 360K 5 1/4" disk drive, built in monochrome and color graphics adapters, a 3 voice sound circuit (for complicated sound and music generation) and a speaker.

- The keyboard which features 90 keys.

- The MS DOS diskette with full BASIC.

Just a trip down memory lane for anyone who's pissed that their 2 gig porn video seems to be downloading slow.

So true - I remember when my room-mate got a PC in 90 or so - spent 2 grand plus, I believe. It was pretty basic. It was able to have word on it and it ran Tetris - ooooohhh. Now it's amazing what you can get for less than 2 grand.

Or less than one grand. My first computer was a Commodore VIC 20 (I still have it) and it had no operating system or very much functionality.

Worse in the late 80's I bought a 512kb machine for around $4k and thought I had the ultimate. The notion that I could download HD porn videos 20 years later never occurred to me.

I think the trend away from desktops towards portable machines will continue, but also cloud computing (which I'm not keen on) will start to gain ground properly so processor speed/ram etc. will become much less of an issue than Internet connection speed.

In the nearer future I expect to see the line between laptops and tablets blurred even more. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

^I have a slight difference of opinion. I do belive that Tablets will be responsible for the death of the portable computer market to the point where only a few companies will continue to produce machines.

I think that desktop machines are going to have a major resurgence in the years to come in large part because tablets will have killed the laptop market and paople will want a computer. Tablets are really nice toys but they are not computers and can not become so with todays level of technology. Most makers are trying to make them as thin as possible, light as possible annd the while adding as much processing power and gadgets to their respective tablet. Unless someone invents a processor that doesn't heat up while doing major calculations than tablets can only ever be of a certain size before they risk major damage to overheating. Then you have to add battery power to the equation and again you can only make them so thin and lightweigh before you lose play time.

The only solution is to make tablets larger and thicker but guess what? A bigger and heavier tablet is basically a laptop without a keyboard. Long live the Brown Coats.

Id have to agree with your analytical view of this Pat362,
I know Googles cloud idea system is to make things assessable elsewhere. However people love power. The same reason even if a bus in on the corner near your house and your drive mustang, how do most people get to work?
In the Stang of course. Since 2007

• Hard drives will be considerably bigger, and hopefully many companies will build computers with SSDs or moving towards using that technology.

• I wouldn't be surprised if many models are available with no disc drives.

I know this one sounds crazy, but we are moving away from physical media and it could be entirely possible that in the future you only purchase software in digital formats and back it up to something else if you choose. Recovery discs could be replaced with a thumb drive that ships with the computer and you watch all your Netflix (or Blockbuster ) online--assuming those companies are still around in 5 years.

• I'm hoping wireless becomes the standard for input devices like keyboards and mice while also utilizing rechargeable or even solar batteries (which already exist).

• USB 3.0 (or 4.0 by then?) should be in everything, even the products of stubborn Apple engineers, but something even faster and more versatile may be available--and also wireless! (And it doesn't give you a tumor in the process! )

• Price? <$1000 easily for a decent laptop or desktop, and hopefully Internet porn habits won't become prohibitively expensive. And big monitors and good projectors will become even more affordable as well.

• Ram and processing power will keep improving. No reason not to keep boosting a computer's power, plus it goes against Moore's Law. (Okay, the law is not supposed to be very accurate in a few years, but still.)

And the problem with faster Internet isn't a technological challenge per se, but more of a political/corporate issue. I'm not sure how it works in the UK but in the U.S. there are a few giant media/technology/whatever corporations that control high speed web access for most citizens. And they do business with profit in mind, not what's the best in terms of speed or innovation--i.e. consumers can go fuck themselves if they have a problem.

Again, this is a major issue that would require a change in the entire political environment of the federal government, which is highly influenced and driven by moneyed interests, or corporate citizens, not human citizens. I also see Internet freedom decreasing as well, especially considering recent proposed bills that give the government more power to seize and possibly censor websites. And even if the public sector ultimately never did that the cynic in me says that private corporations would be more than happy to do the job.

So, my : Hopefully I'm right about computers getting way faster and cheaper but the 'net still remains a sort of digital Wild West. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I agree TS, I think that hardrives will be solid state.

One annoyance is how windows handles kernels and memory blocks has sucked since the early 80's. It the reason Macs are faster with less memory and processor speed is they do it better.
I would like to see the PC as we know it become obsolete.

It needs to be a system where Ram,Solidstate memory drive and CPU are as one. The pathetic interchanges on a mother board have not changed in years. They get faster and better, but not more efficient compared to other leaps.

Sadly because of this push to be faster not better
CPU are built cheaper and have less shelf life then a Pent-1 had, many of whom would fire up today if you found one. But your average Dell or HP is trash after 5 years due to the power supply or motherboard fail.
Friend of mine ( who remain nameless). said PC manufactures have been designing PC's to fail within a few years of release. The idea was to have great new ones to replace the dying one. And by the time your old Dell is dead, you want that new shiny one anyways with a new OS.
The Bios's are also designed to fit this unique failure.

As the wild-west becomes tamed I think the Dark or Hidden the internet will become more popular. As my guess is as the Cloud becomes a mainstream, porn and adult search engines will end because of government intervention.

There may even become Adult only ISP accounts, where if anyone lives in the house under 18 you can not get one.
There are already some limitation in real life, like stores that sell porn or liquor you can not bring kids in.
Same idea, as they find that parent supervision over porn use is a joke.

My friends and I talk about this stuff often and we feel a new kid will be on the block soon to change the way things are done. Our fear is and its real is the new kid will come in at the form of government regulation suite ! Since 2007

I love the idea of an adults-only Internet provider, or even better an adults-only Internet!

As I'm neither a child nor a parent I don't need every other site treating me like one or the other (or occasionally both ). A few seconds on Google and you're corrupted--at least if you know what you're doing--and yet they still default their image search engine to "SafeSearch."

The NSFW (Not Safe For Work) warnings make sense sometimes but if you're getting those you probably shouldn't be perusing that site anyway. Or what's "safe" for work is such a wide range of things that pretty much everything on the web is okay to look at in some work setting somewhere. For example, I'd imagine doing research on pregnancy--and not pregnant women porn! --would bring up plenty of "objectionable" material. Hell, try research breastfeeding and I bet some are risking a warning from either the tech guy or the boss. Maybe a Not Safe For Politically Correct Work warning would help.

Still the idea of Congress or any other governmental body attempting to regulate the Internet, or more specifically its content, sends chills down my spine and swear words out my mouth. I really feel I've been spoiled by the web compared to the fairly mainstream groupthink mentality of TV and print media. Spend a little time researching something on the Internet and the breadth and depth of information, whether good or bad, is amazing compared to how TV and print sources present things.

And this may be the problem--no control! Oh my! People are looking at uncensored opinions and media! Sorry, but when people try to control what I read, watch, and listen, then I feel as if they are trying to control how I think. And considering the abundance of socially outdated, technologically ignorant dinosaurs in charge of so much of the government this does not sit well with me.

And one more to add to my predictions:

• Monitors will add a lot more touchscreen capabilities and maybe do away with physical buttons altogether.

My opinion on any Cloud system is pure control of data by the corporations who own the system. Sadly all the people buying into cloud based systems are actually signing away control of their data to corporations intent on making as much money from you. I will never believe that my private data saved on someoe else's server is safe and will never be accessed by anyone but people who have authorisation.

If Facebook did what they did and still does it today then why would anyone think it would be different with Cloud based systems? Long live the Brown Coats.

I agree Pat, The cloud thing with Google etc, makes me nervous seriously. I mean our ISP already know and track us without cookies and sell this information.
Why this is so important to me is as an American I worry when ever I am controlled . I know there are laws, but It makes me wonder how stupid people can be to think if you store data on internet hardrive they wont peak at it. or pass information along they deem national security.

There is a anti-terrorist house bill that in section 1031 would allow detention of U.S. citizens arrested in the U.S., without charge or trial, until "the end of the hostilities." How long will that be? "Indefinitely," says Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who led the charge opposing these provisions in the Senate.

Section 1032 would require the military to handle cases of certain suspected terrorists, even on U.S. soil — though we have a robust civilian justice system for trying and punishing people for crimes on U.S. soil.

With this kinda of control it would be scary for anyone to
access to all your data. I mean it is feasible they could know everything about you from this access and who knows based on what they find lock your ass up until as mentioned above they deem it safe to release you.

Now more then ever I am concerned about where things are headed. Since 2007

My problem with all Cloud based systems is that I'm not certain that there are any current laws when it comes to governing the way the data is handled and who really owns the data. I'm sure companies are claiming that the data is only saved on their server and they can't access it because they have created some kind of complex encryption
system to prevent that but you would have to be a fool to believe that. Aftertall it's their system so I'm sure they have to have a retrival system in case of a server crash so that means they have to have a way of accesing any and all data saved on their server. Long live the Brown Coats.

It is kinda like your car, if you park your car in my state in my driveway and leave it there. I can try and take possession after awhile of it being there. I just have to make notice my intent to get it. If you do not respond or I know you can not respond in 60 days I can own it legally. If there are laws that allow a person to take your car, I am sure the legalese in a billion dollar company can word it to where I feel safe, but the data is not mine.

Example the new Kindle fire, your data is kept online some of it, and the unwary owners have no clue that their face book passwords and data are not stored on their Kindle as Kindles do not store cookies etc. But being most are familiar with PC having access. I really don't like cloud storage for private data. It's my data, I like to keep control of it.

But I suspect it might be a generation thing. I don't think twice about storing my data on my laptop, buying stuff online and using a computer as my primary form of communication. The generation before me often are reluctant to do many of those things.
I suspect my kids' generation won't think twice about cloud storage, sharing data etc. because they will have mostly grown up with the technology and will be much less suspicious of it. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I agree that it's a generation thing but not because we didn't have this type of technology available in our day so much that we don't trust it and for very good reasons.

Todays generation has no problem posting shit on the net that we would never have. Why are there repeated cases of nude pics showing up on celebrity sites? Why are there nude and semi-nude pics of complete strangers also showing up on the net. There's a teen girl who made the stupid mistake of taking pretty racy pictures of herself and compounded the stupidity by saving it on a site which was hacked and those pictures are all over the net.

Our generation understands that you should never blindly trust a complete stranger and that's what pretty much everyone is on the net. I like you guys and girls but I'm not about to share very pewrsonal info but that's what many kids and teens do on a daily basis. Facebook is one of the best example. You're going to tell me that the people responsible for Facebook aren't a bunch of greedy fuckers that wouldn't blink an eye before screwing with their customers? Long live the Brown Coats.

For anyone interested, I recently upgraded to:

intel i5 2500k quad core cpu @ 3.3GHz
8gb ram
gforce gtx 260 (bit old school now)

samsung syncmaster p2450 monitor

3 x 1tb external usb hard drives
2 x 120gb ssd
1 x 320gb internal hard drive

win 7 64

the ssds are for OS and core software / databases etc, the internal drive acts as temporary storage and then get's archived and categorised weekly onto the usb drives.

thanks to people for posting scanner and truecrypt, both look interesting.

the most used piece of software by far on my machine is ThumbsPlus, it's $$ but I've really not found anything that can compete with it (it even supports Python scripting now).

regarding cloud storage (specifically for stashes):

1. I would only use cloud storage if it was privately encrypted and all data was backed-up on the fly and all backups were encrypted.

2. I would want competitive pricing per TB and the ability to (at any time) download the entire lot.

3. I would want porn sites to allow me to enter my details so that I could push content direct from their site to my cloud account.

4. I would want guaranteed max dl speed from the cloud service.

Next hardware upgrade will probably be a cheap touch screen tablet or some 3D glasses.

Been a while since I have updated this. Had a few major upgrades since then. Purchased a fair amount of capacity since then and have built a few RAID systems. Everything is rack and rail mounted, cleaner and looks cooler.

Not sure on the amount of storage capacity I have now. I am going to guess 95 TB give or take a few. I can not find them all. You read that right, I have actually lost a few hard drives during the move to my recently purchased house. I think they were a few 320's with stuff from videobox on them.

I have two Norco 4020 cases, 20 drive backplane 4u cases. A LSI 8888elp raid card, using Chenbro SAS expanders in each of the backplane cases. Those cases are pretty cool, basically 20 drives connected to my computer using a single cable. Have found a few issues with this setup though.

Since they cut the shuttle program they have to store all their alien porn somewhere. You thought the Japanese thought up some crazy shit....
