A possible way to reduce the spam posts here

I'm curious if any thought has been given to not allowing people to start threads in the forum until they've been "trusted by the five". That would stop people from stumbling onto the site, signing up, and posting whatever they feel like posting. That would be less cleaning up for the mods and a cleaner site all around for all of us. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

That's a good idea. It's consistent with the other PU policies.

It's not without its drawbacks, too, as it would increase the dearth of newbies on the forum, at least initially (see Wittyguy's "Where the hell is everyone?").

But you got to do what you gotta do. There's been too much spam and shilling of late. My vote is a "Yea." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I wasn't thinking of keeping newbies out altogether - just stop their ability to start threads. I like new voices - as long as they aren't spewing garbage : - ) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Somebody did make a spam post as a reply in a thread this morning, but it's not as bad as when they start 2 or 3 new threads and bump topics off the home page.

As you all know I am new here and I make sure I follow the rules about posting spam. If I have something new about a site I post it on the site news. If I am in doubt about something I email admin before I post anything. I can understand your point about spam, believe me I do, but I also think that those of us that follow the rules are being punished for those that do not.

With that being said I will of course follow any rule you put out there and try to earn my trust points. I really like talking to you guys and being apart of your community. I really appreciate how you have welcomed me in with open arms. Owner Kick Ass Pictures

Advent - I almost get the feeling you thought I started this thread with you in mind. It wasn't you. Most of the site reps on here, like you, have been a welcome addition. It was a user who signed up to post some Rapidshare links. They were just the latest in along string of junk posts like that, so my three remaining brain cells got together and thought of a possible solution to the problem. Good idea but I would suggest the following...

"trusted by the five" sounds good until one of them goes on a round the world cruise for 80 days. It might be a better alternative for the PU guys to promote some of you guys to "moderator" with certain powers.

By "trusted by the five", I meant a user gets his five thumbs ups and becomes a trusted user. By then, they realize what this forum is for and what is not for.

And I definitely see having moderators as the start of chaos. No forum that I know of is a democracy anyway, so why have more regulators? I think one of the reasons this forum has remained so civil is because we're all equal peons, subject to Khan and Crew. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Right you are, RB. I should've been clearer on that point. It was my own "GIGO" bad.

Of course newbies should be allowed to post. But now that I think about it, wouldn't spammers just post in threads without creating new ones themselves? There's the rub! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Yes, I'm really tired of the fact that 2/3 or 3/4 of the "new thread started" emails I get are for spam. Usually it is already deleted by the PU staff (?) by the time I take a look, but it sure clutters my inbox. I hate to turn off the email completely because now and then a new thread is started that I am happy to know about. I was about to suggest that some mechanism be put in place to get rid of spam "new threads" before an announcement is mailed out about them. So I wholeheartedly agree -- I'm in favor of having a requirement that moderators approve new forum threads before they go public. I haven't seen so much spam in other areas of PU, but I"m in favor of moderation everywhere that spam is a problem. I leave it to the PU staff to decide who the moderators will be. Thanks!

Any rule, or safeguard will have a way around it. But, even if they're bent on spamming and post in existing threads, it wouldn't be knocking good threads off the page.

The more I think about this, the more I think I should've sent this to the powers that be before bringing to the forum. I notice we haven't had any official comment on any of this. I was just wondering if they'd ever kicked around any ways to knock off some of the spamming. But it is nice to see I'm not the only thinking the spam is an annoyance. I did not think you were talking about me personally because I have seen the threads you are referring to, I just wanted to say that while I see some spam from certain people to stop all newbies from starting threads might be a little discouraging. After reading all of the replies to the thread I see that making sure they are a trusted user would be the safest way to go. I think that would make the newbies post more within threads already started and allow them to get a feel for the board. I have to admit though sometimes it would be nice to just pick you guys brains really quick like I did with the gagging post. I have been ask to think about taking over the customer relations dept at ATK so it would be nice to get input from you guys from time to time. I have not decided to do it yet but thinking about it. I have only just got here myself, but I am finding it a very friendly, interesting, informative & entertaining place.

Hi RB,

Good idea you have. The main issue I find is the e-mail notifications that cause clutter, like someone mentioned. We usually pull the spam threads down in time for it to be annoying, but having a safeguard would make things a lot easier.

5 trust votes would definitely guarantee the job gets done, but I'm thinking it's too much. Maybe require newbies (5 pts or less) something a little easier like a completely filled out "profile" and vote to at least 20 polls or something. Getting trust votes can take a lot of time. It's a lot to ask for new users, plus they may not know how to even get trust votes.

I like the idea, but five trust votes does seem to be asking a little much, especially the way we have trouble giving and receiving trust votes. I include myself in this, as it took me a while to start giving people positive trust votes, and I have frequently read (and wrote!) something along the lines of "Sorry about the late vote..." So maybe something else perhaps, plus a couple of trust votes? "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I wish you would consider taking that position, Advent. My experiences with the customer relations department of ATK Galleria were not positive, to put it mildly. They (and that included ATK Natural and Hairy) also didn't seem to be too responsive to well-meant suggestions.

One example, every time I went to the ATK Lounge the word "Amatures" on the cover would stare me annoyingly in the face (okay, so I'm anal), even though all the sites are supposed to be about "Amateurs" and I kept quietly stating on various occasions that it might slightly undermine the credibility and class of ATK if they couldn't even spell Amateur right.

Yet month after month there was no change and no one ever wrote back saying, yes, you're right we don't like to embarrass ourselves, thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we have changed the word in the meantime.

Last time I looked it was still Amature! :-)

Something would be nice, I will admit that. A method I might consider is 5 "approved" posting before a new thread can be posted. This meaning that if the user has 5 posts that are up long enough to be seen by the staff and shown to be legit than the user is okay for new threads. Another option is to allow a new user to post a new thread right out the gate, current method, but not have the thread "go live" until it is approved. This would allow the staff the screen out spam before it gets to us.

Any method used need to be something that will not deter new members from beginning to contribute. I do not like the trust vote idea because it is easy for someone to not get votes because the rest of us forget about it.

There is nothing truly wrong with the current method. The spam gets taken down pretty quick. Once it is down all the current threads show up on the home page. On the other hand, if there is a fair way to kill spam with sparing the new users it would be well worth looking into. I've barely got 5 trust ratings myself, as a newbie I think it's a little elitist, it would stop a lot of newbies posting threads not just spammers.
I think a cool off period of say 48 hours and a min of 5 posts would be sufficient in keeping a lot out and although there would still be some I think better to just perhaps get another mod to clean up than make the forum harder to use.

Okay, I'll concede that the 5 trust votes is a steep price of open admission to the forum - but at least the situation is being looked at and maybe something can be done to minimize the problem. I like the idea of having newbie posts approved by the staff before they're put online. That allows responsible new members a voice and keeps out the junk posts. At first, I thought that would require more work for mods, but it can't be any worse than having to go through and delete the spam, can it? Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

No need to fix anything, Advent. I went back to the Lounge last night as a visitor to see if "Amatures" still raised its ugly head but found that the format had changed completely since last I subscribed to an ATK site. At one time the entrance to "The Lounge" almost looked like a magazine cover and the misspelled word really loomed large.

But take the job anyway, you look like a very involved person in anything you do and that's exactly what we need .. the feeling that someone at the other end listens and responds in a nice way.

Here's what Khan and I came up with as a good and simple solution:

-Newly created users (as of the day it goes live) can create a thread as normal and will be approved by staff (within a few hrs on avg) before it goes live.

-If the thread is blatant spam, the user will be warned or suspended, and the thread will never go live.

-If the thread is legit, we will approve it (it'll go live, e-mail notifications sent) and the user will be given normal forum privileges from that pt forward.

-Users that were registered prior to the new system going live will never have to worry about getting a thread approved. They are assumed to be legit since spammers normally hit and run.

-All webmasters are required to have their first thread approved, regardless of when they registered. There's a higher chance webmasters are posting a promotion of some kind, although usually not meaning to abuse the forum.

Let me know what you guys think. Appreciate all the input.

"Aymay anacondasway olitelypay inhabitway ouryay oxersbay." = "mAy anacondas politely inhabit your boxers" for those of us lazy people who do not wanna go through the trouble of looking.

I think that will do the trick nicely Rick. The turn around time us usually pretty quick on things here, especially during the day and evening. So I do not think this will fend anyone off that has something legit to say. Lets hope the idea of creating a real thread before spamming the crap out of us seems like too much work for the evil spammers.

Way to go RB, look at all the trouble you have caused! :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

The PU forum watch dogs (meant in a good way) are absolutely awesome. I just watched a whole string of spam posts disappear in front of my very eyes. One minute they were there, next minute they were gone. The posts spamming someone's blog couldn't have been in this forum for longer than five minutes. Wow. Well done!

I think I might have been the one who got Khan going about the staff not magically implementing everything in a matter of minutes. There was a spam post and I gave a retarded message in the spam report. So yup, that "one user" should read "stupid badandy400".

Of course this will take a little time to get going, and even a little more since they might still be working out any issues with the new TBP revamping. Sorry if I sounded like a jerk, I was just being dumb! :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

badandy, you kinda did me a favor by pointing out that we didn't give a time-frame.

Technically I could have said "at least two users" because you weren't the only one. I was thinking if several of our regulars could be confused on this one, there's a good chance others are too.

So, don't feel like you did anything wrong. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

A time frame never crossed my mind. I just figured I'd check in one day to see a nice announcement. : - ) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Just a quick heads up ...

We got this change made last Friday afternoon. That's the change described by Rick in Post #29 (above). While it obviously won't stop spam altogether, if this weekend is any indication, it should greatly reduce the number of drive-by spams that show up on the forum.

Thanks to all for the suggestion and ongoing support. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Good job guys. I am sure the changes will have a good impact on the forum. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~
