Nifty Computer Programs You Use

Thought I'd start a thread about software and/or webservices that you find useful and that other PU users might not be familiar with. Edited on Apr 20, 2023, 11:47am

I use a program called "Hide Folders XP" to keep my porn safely away from unauthorized viewers. It is really simple. I know that alot of people probably think that if you password protect your login on XP that people can't see your files. That is not entirely true. Although no one can open them the files can still be found with the search function. This program takes that ability away.

Pretty nifty really.

Best thing I ever did when it comes to privacy was to read someone's post where he recommended True Crypt. I installed it last week, encrypted my external drive, gave it a strong password and can now relax about prying eyes. It's a great program.

I checked out their site and will try it out after I read the beginner's tutorial.

I really like their "plausible deniability" method. Not only do they lock up your stuff, but they also provide explanations on how to deal with those doing forensics on your computer.

I didn't go their "plausible deniability" route because the simpler way of doing things serves my needs just fine. All right, all right .. I need to keep things simple! :-)

What I really like is that I no longer have to encrypt individual picture sets or videos. All I have to do is put them into my mounted drive .. as is .. and when I want to use them I don't have to worry about decrypting anything. When I'm done I simply turn off the external hard drive and no one who turns it on without my knowledge would ever know that there's anything on it. Just what the doctor ordered.

LOL. Simple always does it for me as well, as long as a given program does its basic job well. In any case, I don't have the sort of material that would make the FBI (RCMP in my case) want to expose me to lengthy grueling examination and arm twisting. I'm simply protecting myself from friendly underage family eyes and True Crypt does that superbly.

True Crypt's site says the "plausible deniability" is for cases where users are forced (by "adversaries") to give their passwords, such as in cases of extortion, but I didn't read anything about law enforcement serving a warrant. I doubt most sex offenders/pedophiles are really worried about extortion, or at least not as much as simply being caught. It's probably just not in good taste to explicitly advertise a software feature that would appeal to sex criminals. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? The capability certainly applies to what you suggest, but another, far more serious, concern is court ordered investigations where a warrant for search of hard drives under FISA are becoming popular.

The idea that you can maintain documents and/or financial records with some assurance that they cannot be accessed by force of law, extortion and/or any other force is very appealing to me.

After all, in Roe v Wade the Supreme Court created a "right to privacy" which I plan to exercise if, as and when something comes up that I really don't want others to know.

Sorry. I really don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but as a rule I try to steer clear of little freeware programs.

There are the exceptions, such as the DivX player and the not-so-little Firefox browser.

However, my experiences with little freeware thingies has been pretty bad over the years. Conflicts, crashes, malware, oh my! All the way from the early '90's (the "sneaker net" phase) to the recent past this year.

I used to have GIMP of the machine of this moment. Never was able to verify yes or no if that brought on a very prolonged and nasty sick leave for it with packed.generic.200 dishing out the afflictions, but that was really awful.

So, as Daryl Hall once said, "I can't go for that." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I discovered recently that free defrag programs are junk. This happened when I needed to create a new partition, and I couldn't do it even though I had tons of space. I tried all the free defrag progs to no avail. I finally ponied up the money for Perfect Disk, and it did the trick.

First, the freebies:

Even though it's been called outdated, I still use DVD Decrypter to help when ripping DVDs to avi.
http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ (You'll have to manually copy and paste this link - it doesn't seem to be posting right)

The name is a bit misleading, but I use a program called Cdrom List Creator to make lists of files in folders and on drives.
http://www.leeos.com/cdrom_list_creator.html

When working with pictures, I use Colorcop to grab a pixel's color code. It gives you both RGB and hex codes
http://colorcop.net/

For grabbing flash video, I use Orbitdownloader.
http://www.orbitdownloader.com/

For converting flash video, among a couple of other programs I have, I use All2Avi.
http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/

Every once in a while I like to clean up my favorites folder. AM Deadlink looks for dead links and duplicates
http://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm

You have to be somewhat of a Videogeek to make full use of it, and I have to admit I'm not up to using it to it's full potential, but Avisynth is the only way I know to make a video run in reverse.
http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page

Open pdf files faster and without the mildly annoying splashscreen that you get with Adobe using the Foxit Reader
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Clonespy finds duplicate files to save drive space. Majorly configurable with all kinds of filters.
www.clonespy.com

For renaming files and folder en masse, I love Jim Wilsher's Bulk rename Utility
http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

Stuff I've paid for and never regretted:

Tmpgenc 4.0 xpress. By far, the best video editor I've used to date. Heavy on system resources, but the options and ease of use make it a gotta have to me.
http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html

ImageDupeless scans for and shows you duplicate pictures. There is a free version that has limitations but I liked the program enough to buy it.

I found this free little programm called "Any Video Converter" that allows you to convert all of these video files: avi, asf, mov, rm, rmvb, flv, mkv, mpg, 3gp, m4v, vob, YouTube videos into these video files: avi, mp4, wmv, flv, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, mpg (PAL or NTSC), mp3, wma, ogg, aac. It's not the fastest but it's free.

I burn or copy my stuff using my paid version of Nero 8. Long live the Brown Coats.

• After I got it, I was able to remove three other programs.
• No other program I've used does clip joining as smoothly as this one.
• I got tired of using different programs for different file types - especially with Virtualdub's inability to work with wmv files.
• There's about 2 dozen filters for manipulating picture and sound quality, with most of those filters having several options of their own.
• There are output options galore with both video and audio file types and the quality thereof.
• Does batch conversions.
• Makes slideshows with and without sound.

All in all, it's just about options, options, options and how easy it is to use. The interface is fairly intuitive and I find I can do a lot of things with Tmpgenc that I can't do with other programs. I'm really not one of those people I (respectfully) call a videogeek. I don't know how to write too many scripts like you have to do with programs like Avisynth and there's still a bunch of stuff in Virtualdub that I still can't make heads or tails of. There's still more for me to learn even with Tmpgenc - but even with what I already know, the final products from my editting already look and sound better than anything I'd done before. To me, a hundred dollars isn't all that much for a product that actually works and works well. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Looks like more of a converter and compressor program than a video editor.

Can't say I am too interested in reediting sites' posted videos, since I don't have access to the raw footage (and if I did I would probably not even get one video's final cut done...), but there are countless videos out there that are way too fucking long. I'm not sure I understand what you would you call video editting then. Conversion isn't editting? And, with this program, you don't necessarily have to compress the output. I've set the bitrate the same, or even a bit higher than the original, and there's no apparent loss of quality. Maybe it's because I didn't mention it specifically, but one of the filters gives you the ability to chop out whatever you don't want. You can cut out the scene where you caught Aunt Bertha picking her nose at your daughter's wedding. That fixes the wedding video and you can put Aunt Bertha's special moment up on YouTube. Like you said, there are plenty of videos out there that are way too long. It's done wonders on some of the videos from one of the last sites I commented on here. As an example, I took a 250 meg file with over 10 minutes of fluff and turned it into a 4 minute, 60 meg file of "the good stuff". I've also used this on a bunch of 70's classic porn flicks, brightening the picture, correcting the colors, cutting out the noise lines and black bars in the original VHS rip and, in some cases, correcting a distorted aspect ratio.

I don't know... That all looks like editting to me. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Don't feel bad about that. I don't know how many people I've worked with who don't even know how to turn their computers on. And they don't think that's a problem, either! No, sirree! That's someone else's job, somehow. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Yeah, the guy who was the former owner/CEO of the company I work for (he sold it and started another) couldn't use computers - depended on them for sure, but he wanted everything printed out for his review and his exec assistant did all of his dictated e-mails - lol

Brilliant guy, though - seriously - but like most people he has his great strengths and great weaknesses

-I use CrystalDiskInfo to read the SMART-values of my external Harddrives. Always good to know if a HDD is on the verge of dying.

-I must have used a dozen batch-renaming tools over the last decade. The one I finally stuck with is ReNamer.

-WinDirStat visualizes the space that is used by files and folders on a harddrive. This tool has become irreplacable for me when I'm cleaning up on my harddrives.

-Faststone Capture is a tool for making screenshots. It can make screenshots of windows, freehand selections and window components. It can automatically scroll down and sidewards in browsers and other programs to make screenshots of large pages and frames.

-KeePass is the password manager I use to store all my logins.

-Have you ever copied a large amount of files and folders and Windows explorer aborted the whole thing because of a single file that made problems? TeraCopy is a small tool that solves that problem

...

Just downloaded this utility and it has become my instant favorite already. I've wanted something like this for a very long time.

The only issues I have (minor ones) are that the report cannot be exported to an Excel spreadsheet so it can be used as a cataloging tool, nor can it be printed out directly. (It can only be printed via a screen capture process.)

Morgentau, have you found a workaround to these two issues?

Because the output is directly linked to the directory and the content, the cleanup process is very simple and complete Edited on Aug 02, 2009, 11:58am

In the same style as WinDirStat - is Scanner.exe, a freeware program by this German dude, it is much simpler, very fast and I find it more intuitive than the odd blob graphics that WinDirStat makes, but then again, it has a bit less functionality too. Everything has it's pluses and minuses. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I agree that the graphic result is far better with scanner.exe, but the data listing in WinDirStat is interactive so if you see what may be a garbage file based on title, size, date, you can delete it to the recycle bin or directly to cyberspace. I don't see that feature in scanner.exe.

I'm sure you know that just because it's free doesn't mean it's bug-ridden. And I know everyone's PC has it's own quirks, but I've had more problems with some paid for apps because they're so bloated. Free apps - especially open source, on the other hand, usually have had a lot of people working on them to work out the bugs. And they rarely, if ever, install anything but themselves. The Open Office Suite is a good example. It allowed me to get rid of M$ Works altogether and I no longer have to deal with Microshaft installing the Works Calendar Reminder that you have to go through a bunch of crap to keep from writing itself back to the autostart menu.

Some of the programs people have posted here are now in my folder of keepers and it might surprise you how handy they are. Unless you're running a dinosaur operating system like me (Windows 2000), at least you've got system restore in the event of trouble. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

The best quality programs are usually those that are written by a single author and maintained actively over several years. Many of these small programs are freeware (foobar2000, mIRC, Mp3Tag etc). The worst programs I've come across are often those that are bought up by some company and then 'pimped' with dozens of features. WinOnCD and Norton Utilities for example... *shudder*

That little program is pretty cool. I love that it can read sub directories and the output is easy to read as well.

I did download another program a while back that was nice. I can not remember off hand what it is called but it was free. It would take everything in a directory and copy the information to an Excel spreadsheet, which is very handy. It would also give other information such as file size.

Anyway, thanks for that link. I will be playing with that one for a while now. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

A program that was mentioned a year or so ago on PU is Karen's Power Tools that has a Directory Printer module.

The program is OK as a directory printer but it's not nearly as robust and easy to use as Scanner.exe.

The website for Karen's Power Tools is Karens Tools

Hmm...there are many interesting tools on here but to be honest besides a few add-ons for mozilla I never found the need for other programs. Most often I find them to be buggy. I simply hide the folders I don't want people to see (usually within another folder and make them invisible from properties) and set my pc options to show only visible. It's an extra step but keeps my files secure unless someone is actually actively searching for my porn (which I doubt my GF or room-mate will do)

I do use download them all as a download manager, adblock and no script in order to keep me somewhat safe from viruses and avg anti-virus and trojan killer to kill whatever does get on my PC. Oh I also use screencap an add-on for firefox that let's me take photos of the sites I visit(or descriptions of videos I will later download)
That's about it, besides word and media player classic :)

Firefox can't find the server at www.spadixdb.com.

Hmmm, CrystalDiskInfo looks very useful.

For downloading files I use NetTransport which even downloads streamed content. For those sites that don't work with a download manager I find that the Down Them All Firefox add-in almost always works.

I started using Perfectdisk as a defragmenter after seeing it mentioned here. Its a nice program, but at $29.99 I feel a bit overpriced.

When I got my Western Digital Media Player, it came with a video conversion program called Media Converter. It can be purchased on line and converts most files to much smaller AVI ones.

A free conversion program I like is called Bink and Rad. Not only does it change formats, you can also join clips together. It has a lot of other features, but I admit I don't understand them. It looks like it can change many different aspects of videos. Freeware.

Another file converter is SWF&FLV Toolbox. After you have downloaded flash videos, it converts them to other formats. Freeware.

The program for file conversions that comes as part of Nero, the DVD burning program, makes MP4 files that are 4x larger than AVI. I don't use it anymore. However Nero is just fine for burning DVD's.

If you want to copy DVD's I suggest DVD shrink. It works a lot faster than Nero. Freeware.

If you want to download files from DVD's I suggest CONVERTVODTOAVI. AVI files are fairly small with good playback. I am not sure if it works with copyrighted DVD's as I use it only to save videos from DVD's I made, but want to throw out. I have far too many DVD's. Freeware.

A good program for editing videos is DIVX author. There is a free one month trial, but buying it is inexpensive at $9.99.
