To review or not to review?

So through some luck and a very nice webmaster, I got access to a site for free. The site has no reviews, so I wanted to write one. But then I looked at the rules for writing reviews, and it specifically states that you cannot review a site based on free access. And seeing as this forum is where I got said access, even if I wanted to there's no way I would be able to deny it. But I believe that I can (and do) have an impartial opinion of the site. So do I go ahead and write the review anyway?

Sorry but we cannot accept a review based on free access. You are welcome to submit a Comment but it would be fair if you note in the Comment that your remarks are based on free access. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I understand the rule, and it does make sense (especially the part about asking for free memberships just to write reviews), I just think it's a little weird specifically because of how hard it is to actually enforce. If our discussion had been almost anywhere on the internet except this forum, more than likely no one here would have ever found out about it. With any review, you're basically just trusting that the user is telling the truth about how they got access, because you generally have little way of proving whether they are.

Edit: And to be honest, I don't really like the implication that I can't be impartial, but I understand it. It would be like saying a movie reviewer can't impartially review a movie because he watched it for free.

I agree with the PU rules on this one, while I'm sure some could be impartial and post a fair review of a site even if given free access, I think many would be unknowingly affected by the fact that they gained access for free. I think your comparison to film reviewers is reasonable, although value for the dollar is rarely a component of the review of a film, whereas it is a pretty major part of a porn site review. See how good a film review you would get, if you asked the critic to pay!

I don't know Cap'n, there are lots of good independent film reviewers out there, some of them probably pay to get in. In fact, they are likely better reviews as they aren't influenced by studios. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I would think most movie critics would not care about having to pay to see a film. A good movie is a good movie, a bad one may be so bad they want their time back instead of their money!

As far as porn sites go, if I got a free membership (just saying, if any webmasters or mistresses are reading this...) I would still have plenty of other factors to judge. I don't care if a site pays me to be a member--if they've got a bad site I'll know pretty quickly. I just wouldn't be able to do a full review on it. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Whilst I somewhat agree with the PU rules, what would be nice for the webmasters (Just an idea) is TRUSTED (many many points on here) moderators being able to check out the site from all points of view.

e.g

Porn fan, fetish view etc etc.

I don't think it would create bias at all.. I think it would be great to have constant feedback & criticism. Once a year isn't always sufficient... and what a bonus for the users no?

And I've just hit 50 on the forum.. do I get a badge yet? lol Mistress Kent xx

In the case of movie reviews, if the critic has to pay to get in then they would just claim it as a business expense from their employer so they wouldn't be paying it anyway. Even an independent one could claim it against their tax bill.

In my experience almost all adult site review sites require free access to the adult site they are reviewing anyway.

If someone has joined many sites then the price would be a good benchmark, but there's no way to check on that either.

Overall I think the rule of no reviews based on free entry is a good idea but I don't see it is police-able. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Good point Ed, I guess it is true that most review sites get free access - but at least they are marketing themselves as 'professional' reviewers, rather than just some random guy/girl that looks at porn. I think my reviews are generally pretty fair, but I think a review posted to a site I had gotten free access to would probably be influence by the fact that I got free access even if I didn't realize it (I gave Wicked Pictures a good score even though it has many problems partially because it is cheap!) Hi Mistresskent,
As someone on the list of many points, I don't think your idea is practical. I agree that it would be a plus for someone like you to get reviews from trusted PUers, but there is still a question for me of keeping that trust. There would inevitably be a question as to bias, just because access was free. Another matter to consider is that of point of view. TBP reviewers often review sites that they would never join, simply because they don't find the content interesting. I think that if I did the same, my bias against the content would take away some of my objectivity. I join sites I hope I will like. Sometimes I like the content and sometimes I am disappointed. That is how you earn trust from others.

Candidly after reading this thread and thinking about the subject, the bigger contributor to biased reviews, in my opinion, is the responsiveness of the webmaster to member communications.

If I get a real response from a real person who gives the impression he/she really cares about me and my opinion/experiences with his/her site, I will be much more likely to score the site a lot higher than if the usual occurs where I get no response at all.

I only send emails to paysites if I am having a problem, and not even always when I am having a problem. I think the most common response to my requests for help is no response. Sometimes the response is a form email that is little to no help. Only rarely do I get a response that is helpful. Tech support is one of the poorer areas of paysites, as far as I am concerned.

Maybe we should make a poll question about the overall or usual experience with tech support?

How do we search to see if that subject has already been done as a poll question? Edited on Sep 21, 2010, 09:40am

If you look at the page for Previous Polls ... you'll see a block for keyword search.

Hope that helps. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Thanks for the tip, Khan.

I did a search at that page for "tech support" (without the quotation marks), and the response I got was "No Polls Found." Which I found a little surprising.

So I will probably try to make a poll question on the subject.

If you do a search on "support" you'll see there were a few old polls that touched on tech support though not specifically addressing tech support alone.

However, as both of those are fairly old, you're more than welcome to submit a poll focusing on tech support. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I had a member tell me the other day he joined a site and had a problem. When he tried to find an email or contact form to request help, there was none available anywhere on the site.

This is just crazy. Adult sites often complain about their retention ratios and wonder why they have problems retaining members. It isn't that hard to respond to an email. I think many online businesses feel because they are online, they don't have to bother with it. Wrong!

I was looking for an old thread, and came across this. This is a quote to remember! Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.
