Old VHS porn - do you still have it? I was clearing out some of my old stuff today and I was kind of amazed at how much old porn I had amassed over the years! I'm only in my 30s but I've been buying porn since I was about 15, and I started getting VHS tapes when I was around 16 or 17. I was too young to buy them of course but always looked younger than my age! Anyway I seem to have hundreds of old VHS tapes. Some of them I remember as being hot and I so I still want to keep them. I still have a VHS player. Still I don't have a great amount of room, so I don't know what to do. I guess I should sort through the tapes and get rid of old ones I no longer want, but it seems kinda awkward to know how to get rid of them. I gave a load of non-porn VHS tapes to my local charity shop (I think my North American friends call them goodwill stores) and they seemed happy enough to take them though I don't know how many people would buy them now. However, I gave those away because I now have them on DVD. Some of my old porn was never released on DVD so I want to save them. I guess eventually my VHS player will die so I should maybe buy a kit to convert them into a computer file or something, though I'm not sure about this. The technical and also the legal side - is it okay to make a backup copy? If so, do I have to keep the tape to prove I bought a copy legally or can I then dispose of the tape? The ones I don't want though - what do I do with them? Just throw them away? I can't give them to a charity shop, and even freecycle seems kind of inappropriate! I did wonder about a Craigslist ad - they allow personal sex ads so I'm sure they'll allow that too. That way I could make sure whoever picked them up was over 18. Ebay don't allow them to be sold and I can't think of any other way of getting rid of them. I also feel kinda nervous about putting out all those tapes for the bin men (garbage men?!). Anyone else have old VHS porn? Ever watch it? Will you keep it and if not, how do you propose to get rid of it? | |

Throw the tapes you don't want in a black, contractor grade hefty bag. That way you know it won't accidentally tear open. If you are looking for the utmost anonymity, drive them to a business dumpster - just make sure they don't keep their dumpster locked before dragging over a giant bag o' porn. Honestly though, the garbage men don't care, won't check, and have seen worse. These rules also apply to disposing of bodies. P.S. Do I have VHS? God no! I never want to interact with a VHS tape ever again! Also, you can buy a VHS / DVD recorder on eBay for around $50. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" If they are old favourites that you can't get on a dvd to buy then I think it is worth making a modern copy. If you can get a dvd recorder/vhs unit in one use that, it will be less hassle than getting the kit to plug the vcr into the computer (albeit more expensive at about £250 for a new one when I looked last about a year ago although you might be able to get a secondhand one for less from someone who has already done their conversions). Whichever way you do it all depends how much time you want to devote to it compared to the outlay. Having said that, I have not used the pc convertor kit so it may be that it is not that much trouble after all. With a pc kit you may also find you can edit the videos better with hand chosen chapter stops, edit out the crap bits and what not. Personally, unless you've got loads of free time on your hands I don't think its worth the extra time to mess about with editing even a favorite old adult flick; a dvd recorder will do auto chapter stops every 8 mins or whatever which is a fair compromise and the way I see it, that it 100 times better than what you had with the VHS ! Most people probably wouldn't care less, but personally I would then chuck out the tapes - ethically I think if you have made a copy for yourself then the original shouldn't be recycled to a new viewer. Just cut the tape in half, and if you don't want to put them in the household waste then just drop them in at the council tip. Edited on Sep 20, 2012, 12:31pm | |

There are a lot of VHS to DVD devices out there. I don't know that it would help people outside of the U.S. (I didn't check the companies shipping info) but here's a list to check out. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. | |

The biggest mistake I ever made was to throw away all of my VHS tapes when I did a major clean up. I so regret that decision now so I'm going to tell you to keep any and all VHS tape that aren't on dvd. Throwing them away now won't bother you but it will a month or two after you have done it. As usual, I have to agree with pat. Throwing out your old tapes will be something you come to regret. As others suggested, you can probably find a used DVD recorder online in your area. Ideally you'd want one with both the VCR and DVD drives but if you have a VCR you can just get a DVD recorder and use patch cords. Both are simple solutions. As for disposing of the tapes, just take a pair or scissors and snip a short length out of the tape. Open the flap thing on the bottom and cut it at both ends. That doesn't render the tape unwatchable, but if someone wants to watch it they have to go to the trouble of splicing it, which most can't do anyway. And fewer people have a VCR these days anyway. The bottom line is that you should look for a way to convert your tapes to DVD. There are easy and relatively inexpensive ways to do so. You'll regret doing otherwise. Good luck! | |

I wouldn't bother with DVDs at all - just record them straight onto your computer. Just google/amazon USB Video Capture or something and you'll find plenty of adapters that you can hook up composite video to, and record them. The disk space they take up will likely be cheaper than getting blank DVDs... | |

If the quality of the VHS captures that I've seen are typical results from a VHS video capture card/hardware, then I wouldn't expect too much. But I could be wrong. If I had an old VHS tape that I wanted to preserve, I'd probably invest in the necessary computer hardware and give it a try. | |

Depending on how much you have I would suggest the DVD transferr. I have a nice VHS HIFI 4 head copier with built in dvd recorder allows me to record of TV shows and even paid services one might use. They are now aboutthe size of the old VHS were alone and now combos that records are smaller. I can also record from DVD to vhs lol not sure why thats and option but it is on the unit. I personally took all my old porn and recorded it to pc but now I am running out of room on my pc and I am actually cleaning out iffy porn. Not anything I liked, but stuff I did not know I had like gonzo, dp and such I am not into really. Its not spring why is everyone spring cleaning LOL. Since 2007 | |

Thanks for all the helpful replies! It's funny - looking at some of the earliest tapes as quite nostalgic for me because I can clearly remember which were the first ones I bought - until I was 16 I didn't even know gay porn existed, and it blew my mind when I first saw it - especially as I was still coming to terms with being gay. So I guess some of the content actually has some emotional significance to me - it reminds me of when I was very young and seeing men do what I'd wanted to do for years really meant a lot to me - I really wasn't the only gay men and lots of other men really did do all I'd dreamed of - there was the visual proof! I can remember how nervous I was buying it, and which stores I had to go to, to get it! This makes me want to talk about porno nostalgia - think I'll start a nostalgia thread! I do want to keep the content on quite of a lot of the videos. Some I remember as being crappy so I won't bother with those - but it could be a fun project one day watching them again to double check! The ones I do enjoy I think I will see about copying somehow. I'd forgotten about combined VHS/DVD recorders - you don't see them in shops so much now but I'm sure I could get hold one of one, secondhand if required - I'd only need it for one big operation after all as I won't be buying any more VHS tapes in future. If not, I might try and put the content onto my computer. I still have the video player and it's a reasonably up to date and decent one so I'm sure it would have the necessary outputs to go onto my PC. It's funny - I hate the idea of downloading in general - still prefer CDs and DVDs generally - and of course real books not e-books, but I don't care so much about porno being downloaded! I guess because I don't care to have the cases on display like I do with non-porn DVDs and CDs!Plus I have so much more porn than I do non-porn DVDs and CDs put together and I only have so much room (though I easily have more books than porn - I love reading!). As for getting rid of them well I think most will end up in the garbage - it's true I can just put them in a heavy-duty trash bag - good idea! I might see if anyone I know might want them - I find gay men are generally quite open and unashamed about using porn! I remember when I went to Brighton several years ago you could sell your old porn to them, but I expect they wouldn't want VHS tapes either now. Craigslist would let me place an ad I'm sure. I might just keep a handful of the very best tapes for the cover and the memories they invoke - a bit of nostalgia. They'll be curios by the time I'm an old man, and I can show them to young queens who won't have even heard of VHS! If not, copy the good stuff and then junk the lot I think! I still have an old VHS tape with TT Boy doing Tiffany Minx in a bathtub, after having rescued her from a toe-stuck-in-faucet fix. The same tape has a scene with Randy Spears as a porn director, and the actress stops in the middle of the action with a guy and says she forgot her line. Spears looks at the script and says, "It's 'oooh baby, ooh baby, oooh.'" Oh, and not to mention Barbara Broadcast, Desires Within Young Girls, and a 4-hour epic titled Doin' in the Dirt with a hot Raquel Darrian scene in it. You know, with that guy Derrick something. There's probably more, but I just started a round of house cleaning about 6 six weeks ago. Things take time. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. | |

^I'm quite nostalgic about porn because there are so many great movies (at least I think so) shot in the 70's and 80's that no one born in the last 20 years as seen because whoever owns them never thought to transfer the movies to a digital format. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

Sadly, with the advent of DVD, I eventually had to throw out well over a couple hundred VHS tapes (many solid classics) I'd collected over the years. There were originals covering every early porn star of the time. Also had a humongous collection of Beta -- which, unfortunately met the same fate as its VHS nemesis. I couldn't give them away. Porn shops wouldn't even come pick them up. It was like a mother tossing her baby in the trash. I grieved over it. I learned later a renewed and growing interest developed in those old tapes.... which appears to augment values now well above anything I'd ever thought. Go figure! story of my life! Too late now. | |

Like others here have already suggested, if you love your collection you can always convert it to dvd or any digital format and store it. Heck, you could even upload the best ones online. We could all use some vintage porn anytime.  Also, if you wanna dispose it, you could simply ask any teenager or a collegian to take it. I'm sure nobody will refuse it.  Anyways, cheers.  | |

There is something extra special about old VHS stuff. One of my favourite tapes was the Daily Sport Page 3 orgy starring a very young Nici Sterling Long lost but never forgotten. I have hunted the net for years to try and find this movie but so far no luck. | |

Very interesting thread. I still have all of my old VHS tapes (I'm a pack rat by nature), most of which have not been played in at least 10 years. About 75% are dubbed over from rented tapes so the quality is already somewhat degraded, but this thread has me ready to start a project to copy all the "good stuff" to a dedicated external hard drive and toss the original VHS in the dumpster. It seems like a waste of good material but I have no idea what else I can do with it. Does anyone know if there's an X-Rated EBay-like site out there somewhere? | |

I still have a nimiety of treasured and cherished VHS tapes I wouldn't have them converted to DVDs because I like the vintage feel they have now. I still own a VHS player in mint condition and use it fairly often. I appreciate the tracking lines when the tape starts and the fact that you can rewind a tape in under 30 seconds on some machines. It's interesting how VHS is considered "obsolete" (as explained to me by a sales clerk at HMV) in this modern age of technology, when I still consider them to be relevant. How else are you going to watch all those home movies?  I still own a porn movie on Beta tape, which came before VHS tapes, that I can't watch anymore much to my dismay. It was really good too, called "Kiss of the Dragon Lady" 1986 starring Lois Ayres, Greg Derek, and Kari Foxx. I can't seem to find it anywhere and unfortunately Beta tape players are as extinct as the dinosaurs.  | |

I would still recommend converting them to DVD if you want them to remain watchable in the long run. I hate to break the news, but old VHS that have been stored since the 90's or earlier are demagnetizing, and there is generally a noticeable loss in quality with each decade. You can still keep and watch the originals. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off. | |

I just checked eBay and really wasn't too surprised to find quite a few for sale. Quality/condition might be a coin toss as to whether they work or not, but I would imagine there's almost got to be some Ubergeek in your area that would know how to fix them. You actually can sell porn on eBay (at least on ebay.com). It has an "adult only" section found within its "everything else" category. As I type this, there are 18,700 porn tape listings on the website. | |
