In theory, I suppose you could back-up your registry using a software tool designed for that purpose (there are boat-loads of these floating around) and then copy over your program files and documents and settings folders to your external, reformat and then pop that back on. You could do that but I would not recommend it.

As everyone knows, doing a full reformat and reinstall is a tedious, time-consuming process, but it really is worth it and ideally should be done about every 6 months to maintain a chipper and perky computer. The issue of saving the registry and all the programs is that you end up with a clean OS running an old registry (and despite the claims of the registry cleaners, there is only so much they can do) and all of the program files will be old as well. Defragmenting is all well and good, but it only goes so far - same for check disk and so on. If you are having crashes or program slow-downs you really need to just bite the bullet, dedicate a Saturday to being around the house and reformat that sucker and build it back up from the ground up.

If you make a list of the programs you actually need rather than what is on there, my guess is you'll find a lot of old stuff that really doesn't need to be re-installed. Then all you need to backup on the external is your documents and your porn. Also, after reformatting don't forget to put on anti-virus protection before plugging into your ISP. I think it was Drooler who recommended Pizza and Beer as essential reformatting tools; not a bad idea at all. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Solution is simple....kick in the ass. Seriously though..these guys are right. If it is an other system the reinstall might take a little longer, but I have done several of these in a day. This is not a three week project so dont be afraid to do it, closer to three hours. Just make sure you have all the keys for your programs and OS. I also recommend backing up all your family pictures or important documents on a DVD or else wise just to be safe if you use the ghost or other cloning software. The issue with cloning is that you are cloning the issues you are having too. But..the clone could be useful if you reinstall everything fresh, then write the clone image somewhere.....this way next time you can just load the clone and start from there rather than redo everything.

Could always update to a newer machine too, this would certainly solve a lot of issues. Well, for a while. Or course, if you are broke like me this is not such an option! :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~
