Name calling

In the years I've been active here (and oh, yes - this is the only place (apart from at work) where I'm into debates on the net) - it has been a pleasure that the inputs/replies ect. generally have been without hostilities - like name calling for one.
That's the reason I keep on.
I do NOT need bad karma - for any reason. This is a place for mutual help and guidiance.
Apart from the fact that TBP/PU has put up some standards of good behavior, we've just recently experienced name calling.

This user and RagingBuddhist in particular has spoken against it in this case...
And I think name calling should be banned here - which off course should be dealt with by Khan and other webmasters at TBP/PU. "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on May 31, 2009, 06:54am

I read the original incident that you are referring to. I agree completely that name calling is counterproductive and transforms the site beyond its goal of making a forum for information sharing. I join in asking Khan and the others at TBP/PU to enforce a ban on personal attacks.

It is prohibited - but some people probably need it spelled out in greater detail than what's in the rules.

"Upon entry into this site, each user certified that they were an adult, therefore, we ask that you conduct yourself as an adult at all times. It is natural for different people with different tastes from different backgrounds to disagree. However, even when you disagree you should conduct yourself as a responsible adult and refrain from personal attacks and put-downs of fellow users." Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I have seen it in a few places thus far, mostly in replies to user reviews. One person strongly disagrees with another views and such. What I have noticed is that these users do not seem to come back after the event. I guess there are those who would go through the sign up process just to call someone else and idiot.

The forum has stayed pretty clean. Check out a video game forum sometime, they have a 20 word dictionary.

This is the reason I stay here. I do not feel the need to come up with original insults to try to be "one up" on the next guy. And we do not seem to have the alpha dog man super ego I gotta be better than you thing going on. Everyone tries to stay on the same level. Everyone here understand that everyone is different and that is a good thing. This has been the best part of my joining PU is the fact that we are all respectful and can have intelligent debates or discussions. Hopefully, the main goal is the same as others and that's to provide greater information to sites and help each other to make the overall experience of our hobby better. In the mean time, we can get to know each other more because it's just downright interesting and fun. However, when places resort to name calling or other childish behavior that affects the community as a whole, not just the individuals involved. Hopefully this will not become more and more of an occurance because I've noticed it's been pretty good in my short stay so far.

However, I do commend bringing this up and let others know that's not how the greater majority of us are. Thanks to the people who have and continue to be mature so far. Sexted From My iPad

I also read the comments posted about the review and thought that the name calling was uncalled for. We can agree to disagree but once you start throwing insults then you have lost the argument.
I am still impressed by the lack of name calling and insults on this forum. It is both rare and welcoming. Long live the Brown Coats.

I really respect everyone here and hope that name-callers go elsewhere...there's lot of mean talk on the web, but it certainly doesn't belong here. I'll choose life's pleasures over hatefulness any day. Jay G

I do not know if this should strike us as ironic but people are always protesting porn and yet here we are, a civilized porn forum where people can speak their minds with practically no worries about people starting a "your momma's so fat" match.

I think a lot of that comes from the fact this is a porn forum. A person has to be fairly sure of themself to come out and speak on topics such as porn. People who are sure of themselves usually find little need in insulting others for voicing their opinions. A confident person knows others will disagree and that is what makes the world go around. Someone who is insecure is more likely to resort to insults as a defense and is not as likely to put themselves on the porn forum limb.

People emulate what is around them. A new member goes to a forum and sees a lot of name calling and various insults and they will likely do it themselves because it seems normal there. That same person can come here, see who members conduct themselves and do one of two things. One follow the example and be respectable, or two, feel that this forum is not for them and leave. Kinda like going somewhere that people wear a shirt and tie. Most people respond by either wearing a shirt and tie themselves to conform or simply do not go there. PU has fortunately turned into a shirt and tie forum. Something respectable and a place where good user conduct can actually be expected.

Bottom line:
Lets all give ourselves a pat on the back for not being idiots. :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

I also located and read through the exchange. The very first thing the user did was open up with a name-calling insult. A later reply was a qualification of the order of "OK, you're not an XX, but you sound like one."

The user would do well to take a few steps back and see what he sounds like.

Thanks to Denner for bringing this up for forum discussion. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I am used to all the name calling we normally do -- the stuff that is directed towards all the webmasters, photographers, cameraman, etc. who like to lend their two cents, and their voices, to all the videos we try and enjoy.

Here, in response to a user's review, I was surprised because it was in the first line of the reply...not nice. Granted, the review was not exactly the best one I have ever read, but it wasn't the worst either, and insulting any member other than yourself is uncalled for. By normal forum standards it was practically a compliment compared to what people, whether they are anonymous or not, post on sites. As a result, this is the only site on which I actually feel comfortable posting anything. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? After years on the usenet and its confounded, illiterate flame wars I am always very pleasantly surprised when it comes to the maturity of the members of PU and of this forum. It's a pleasure to be able to tackle controversial subjects without being torn to shreds. :-) That's why I couldn't stay away from here for very long.

Another thing that makes it even more amazing is that it seems we are from different races, age groups, countries, religions and so on. So often that is a recipe for a lot of discrimination and dividing between members. It seems that the only thing we do not have in the forum is women, perhaps one day... I think you got me mixed up with Wittyguy, pat. I do plead guilty to the nutcase part, though. And I like it that way, it's a lot more fun than being sane!

And btw. re. brangelina, that's a desperation avatar and not a sign of my devotion to her. If anyone finds me a mature woman with nice clingy silky lingerie I'll use that one ... I had better stop before I get myself too worked up. LOL. Nice work Wittyguy!

Now that I think about it, the avatar sort of reminds of an ostrich burying its head in the ground if it feels threatened (though I don't think they actually do that). Maybe the guy in your avatar was scared by RagingBuddhist's avatar, and so he shoved his head up his ass! "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I like the idea of a porn musical, but you may want to leave out the unemployed Broadway types. I believe that quite a few of them are gay. I have nothing against Gays per say but that doesn't do anything for me...unless it's lesbian porn. Afterall we should keep an open mind.

Then again they could always remake old time porn movies.

Strange you should mention remakes. I just watched "The Story Of O" the other day (for the umpteenth time)and, as always was wishing someone would remake it but with great caution and care. Keep the story as is, just use better cameras and lighting. Now that would be a keeper!

You think with all the endless remakes and sequels Hollywood does, the porn industry would be remaking things from the classic era but with new casts and equipment. They already have the sequels thing very well covered, so maybe remakes are the next step. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I do not think remakes of porn would really do much. It is about the performers. The same set and director would not make the same porduct if he used two different people no matter how hard he tried. Most porn scenes are remakes of each other. Think about it, the same thing happens in most porns. There is only a certain number of positions that can be filmed well so all they are doing is drawing them out of a hat and doing them.

Boy this topic has swayed! "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

To return to the original topic.... :0/

There is no need for name calling on a forum.
As adults we should be able to discuss & differ without the stress of heated argument.

Name calling in jest is OK, but it can be a tricky medium.
No body language to read.

Of all the people on this forum I would have to say that you are last person to be allowed to say that. I use some smilies here, but in the short time that you have been here you have used 14 times the smilies as ever user combined! :) Including that one.

I like light name calling so long as it is in good spirits. It can add a lot of fun to a forum. So long as it is between people who have gotten to know each other a little first. Some people are way to defensive to a little name calling to be fun. Wittyguy uses a little name calling in some of his better posts and I nearly fall out of my chair laughing, including at the ones about me.

On the other side it can be a sensitive thing to get into, and some people and situations simply require it not be done. A new member should probably refrain from name calling because none of us know them well enough to tell if it is fun or meant in aggression. Same goes for us regulars when posting to a new member, they have might not have read any of the threads to learn our personalities.

So the bottom line is when in doubt about getting colorful it is best to leave it out. I personally am hard to offend but many people take things personally. I plead guilty on that one...

I use them frequently, yes, but they are a useful tool in this limited medium. :0)

Yes, it's just as it is anywhere else. The "joking relationship" in light name calling and low-heat roasting is the sign of an established, friendly relationship. There are unwritten rules about it, though they've probably been documented in anthropological studies, as well as in other fields. Somehow, you just "know" when it is and isn't OK, and if you're not sure, don't do it.

I think I can tell the difference between contempt and "just joshing ya." Wittyguy takes shots at my avatar, and I, in turn, at his. I think we're both self-possessed enough not to confuse our real identities with our respective freaks of bondage and sloppy eugenics.

One thing I really hate, though, is when someone abuses the joking relationship by expressing contempt in the guise of light fun. You can tell from the tone. People like that don't remain long in my life. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Exactly. I am happy to see that pretty much everyone has a sense of where the lines are drawn.

"People like that don't remain long in my life." This has been true of this site and forum as well. It seems that those who like to deliver low blows to everyone do not this an overly productive place to spew their negativity. I am glad of that. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~
