Good Non-Porn Movie Rentals Thread

I just thought with the upcoming movie thread discussion, I would add a non-porn movie thread with suggestions for movies. These could be any new releases that anyone would suggest or just your favorite movies that you think everyone should see. My netflix queue is at an all time low and any suggestions would be great for me and anyone interested.

I just can't seem to find any new releases or coming soon's that look good enough to rent lately. Maybe some PU's can give me and others some insight as to a good movie to rent these days. Sexted From My iPad

I have had the same issue lately with my netflix queue. I would suggest renting any TV shows you like but have not seen in a while or would like to watch every episode in order. They have a lot, so I am sure you can find a series you would be interested in. Any actual TV shows you can suggest? I always forget that these can be rented and I have been out of the loop with tv shows for the past few years. This would be great if anyone can suggest some shows to watch and which seasons I should not. I actually just put the 'Blood Ties' season in my queue which is based on vampire books that I read years ago. It probably stinks but I remember liking the books so let's see... Sexted From My iPad

Well there's your problem, mate - you gotta look back into the older films and trust Netflix's recommendation system. Once you've done a good number of ratings, at least a hundred or so, then the recommendation system starts getting quite reliable. Think of it like training voice recognition programs, the more you teach it, the better it gets. I've rated over 1400 movies to help it along. Consequently, I've got over 400 movies in my queue - hell, I've got over 100 in my Watch Instant queue as well, and they have another 4000 they are recommending I watch, lol

There are tons of classics, foreign films and all sorts of bizarre stuff - it is hard to fathom the sheer volume of content they carry. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

You really need to fumble around the site. There is literally tons of good stuff. I have found so many good movies and shows I never knew existed. Pick a genre and look around. If you like science fiction and fantasy than the movie "Outlander" is very good. It's got some really good actors: james caviziel, John Hurtand Sophia Miles to name a few.

I'd have to know a little more what type of movies you like to help narrow the possibilities. Long live the Brown Coats.

What Pat363 said pretty much sums it up "narrow the possibilities." There is so much to pick from, so unless you have been a member for a long time or have been buying pretty much any movie that looks good then you should have no issue finding something new. I kinda made this thread for anyone to rant and rave about any movie they just saw or their favorites that others should see, not just me personally. But for me personally, I love all sorts of movies. My favorites these days are Japanese drama, action, and horror films but I also love anything made by most asian directors. But, honestly, I like films made elsewhere in the world as well. I just watched Nana and Nana 2 (Japanese drama based off a manga) which I fell in love with. The main stars are gorgeous and I think the story is great as well.

Very interesting pickin Outlander, I never knew about this movie and it looks great. Plus, in my netflix page it actually gave it 4 stars for recommendation for me. See, this thread has already gave a great movie to see. Thanks pat362!

Let's keep em coming. For me, I would recommend renting these films if you have not yet seen them which I just watched recently and think are spectacular: Pan's Labyrinth and Let the Right One In. Look them up and see if you might like them. Sexted From My iPad

Try to keep your expectations low when going in to see a movie. If you honestly think a movie will be great before you see it, or someone recommends this particular choice as being great or outstanding, it's human nature to be disappointed or let down. It's much better to be pleasantly surprised on the upside. That's what I try to do for myself, anyway.

I haven't seen "Let The Right One In" yet, but I read the book a month ago, and thought it was a good read.

If you like visually interesting/colorful films, you might like The Cell (2000) with Jennifer Lopez and The Fall (2006) with Lee Pace. Both films were directed by Tarsem Singh, who emphasizes color and visual images in his films. Sort of like Tim Burton or Guillermo del Toro, but not as strong in the story-line aspect.

I need to monitor this thread too. My netflix queue has been empty for 2 weeks. I just changed from 3 out to 1 out because I feel like I've watched eveything I want to see.

My recommendation would be television series too.
Check out the shows that aired on premium channels like HBO or Showtime that you may not have been subscribing when the shows were running.

I sometimes spend more time adding movies than I do watching them, especially since I tend to just queue something if I am even mildly interested, and then sort out the order later.

And Gcode, TV shows are great since you can watch episodes more quickly than when they are broadcast, you just have order more discs than for most films. Of course, "The Prisoner" is on DVD, and I am sure Toadsith would list it as required viewing. They have a ton of HBO productions stuff too; movies, comedy specials, and just regular shows, and probably cheaper than actually subscribing to HBO.

One movie I would recommend off the top of my head would be Brazil; a hilarious black comedy set in the future, directed by Terry Gilliam from Monty Python. It is about a government worker (Jonathan Pryce) in the future who spots an error in his paperwork and who has to go through a very haphazard adventure to try and fix it. I love it because it I think it is what our future will really be like, where everything is controlled by the government but in an incredibly inefficient and unreliable manner, unlike the more finely tuned dystopias we usually see in films. Ah, one of the movies from Terry Gilliam's 'Joy of ages' collection. I grew up with his representation of childhood movie, 'Time Bandits' and I love the other two including Brazil. Brazil was his representation of adult hood and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen was his representation of elderly age. These trio of movies are spectacular and I would recommend everyone too see each movie at least once. I hope Terry Gilliam comes out with another great movie before his career ends, The Brother's Grimm was just not up to par with his earlier stuff.

Another movie I'd recommend is, A Tale of Two Sisters. This is a Korean film and was of course, 're-made' as an American film called The Uninvited (which is nowhere as good as the original). A Tale of Two Sisters aura is chilling and the acting is well done. Plus, it has some great twists in the story that creates a great unexpected ending. Sexted From My iPad

You might watch some of the early Clint Eastwood westerns.
I saw "The Man With No Name" trilogy in the movie theaters when they were first released back in the 1960s, and thought they were great: great story, soundtrack, wonderful anti-hero (Clint Eastwood), wonderful villains, lots of bad guys getting killed. I've seen the series on DVDs, didn't have the same thrills as the original viewing, but still enjoyable to watch.
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Godfather trilogy is even better than "The Man With No Name" series. Absolutely one of the best crime series ever made. Part 1 was fantastic. Part 2 was great. Hard to figure which was better, Part 1 or Part 2. Part 3 was not quite as good, but still so much better than the average blockbuster put out today. The series had violence, story, intelligence, cinematography, so much to try to watch and understand and enjoy.

There's already a forum on PU of great movies. Toadsith was supposed to post his 100 greatest movie choices, but I don't know if he ever got around to doing that. The thread was started by Wittyguy, and has a large number of movies that should appeal to people of different tastes.

Love Clint Eastwood, and many of the films he directed are entertaining as well, except maybe "The Bridges of Madison County"...but there are some good ones. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Disturbia - Fun, cool horror movie with kid transformer (shia lab?)
The orphanage - in spainsh quite effective horror (more physciological)
Pans labrinth - again in spainsh with subtitles it's a great movie same director as the orphanage
Kidulthood - British drama following the lives of some city kids
City of god - movie about the slums of brazil and crime (subs)
The decent - horror about a group of cavers great movie
Superbad - kinda teen comedy but much better written than the shit that was knocked up
The strangers - Horror saw this at the pictures, watch it in the dark for maximum effectiveness

minds gone blank lol i've seen sooo many movies just hard to think

What i do if i want to watch something but don't know what to watch is to go to somewhere like imdb.com and look at the movie top lists ie top 100 comedies. and I go through watching classics that everyone talks about etc.

The last good rental I watched was Gran Torino. If you enjoy watching those TV series on DVD I highly recommend the first season of TrueBlood if you haven't seen it.

I really enjoyed "City of Ember". This is a science fiction movie about people that survived somekind of disaster(my guess is war) by
entombing themselves in an underground city. The actors actorsd are unkowns but it sill has supposrting roles with Tim Robbins, Bill Murray and Martin Landau. Long live the Brown Coats.

I just finished watching the first season of "Over There" recently and thought it was pretty good. Then again I honestly am not that picky when it comes to movies and TV. This was a fictional but realistic story of a group of people who are sent to Iraq and their families at home.

I really try to keep my queue above 100 but it certainly does drop down. That is what is great about renting TV series disks. There are many disk to a series and it can be like watching different versions of your favorite movie for a month. Works great for me! Yeah, after reading these posts and the reminder of the fact that tv series can be rented; I decided to rent Band of Brothers'. This is a WWII era war series that I remember being very well made but I only caught a few episodes and the storyline became jumbled after I missed these few episodes in between. I totally forgot about it and I just entered these in to my queue to see the whole thing. This is great, I have like 15 new discs in my queue after just a few days. Keep 'em coming! Band of Brothers is a great series. If you like that look into Rome. It is similar but set in Roman times. It is very good as well. If anyone has seen 'Quarantine' and thought it was okay (except for the end of course). The movie [REC] is the original movie and is supposed to be 10x better than the USA release. It is a foreign film and is in Spanish but I just thought I'd throw it out there is anyone would be interested. Anyone who does not know about the film, it is about zombie like creatures and lots of suspense and horror auras. Sexted From My iPad Edited on Jul 13, 2009, 08:22pm

I just watched a movie called 'City of Ember'. It stars some teenage kids that I don't know but also Bill Murray and Tim Robbins. It is about a city that was built underground for some reason (probably for humanity to survive from a huge catastrophe that is unknown) and the city is collapsing for certain reasons. It actually was an interesting movie with obvious outcomes, but worth checking out at least. Off-beat concepts with a fast paced storyline, I'd recommend it. Sexted From My iPad

Mad Men, a TV series that lasted about 2 years, is a drama about an advertising agency in the 1960s. Intelligent series, lots of subplots, interesting characters. Both season 1 and season 2 are out on DVD.

I agree with you on this movie. I bypassed the rental process and bought it. I don't regret it. You can add Martin Landau to the familiar faces although he may be less known to younger audiences. You'd have to be a fan of Mission Impossible of Space 1999 to know him. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'd recommend Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. It's a nice teen comedy/romance. The director did a good job of making the material look fresh and original. The acting is low key but really good. Long live the Brown Coats.

I just added the TV series Twin Peaks seasons 1 and 2. I remember as a kid this show being extremely hard to grasp. Hopefully, as an adult now, I will be able to appreciate the series more. I like Lynch and his vision when it comes to film, while some are better than others, you can't help but to like the quirkiness and odd stories he produces. So, as well as this series, I recommend Blue Velvet (PABST BLUE RIBBON!) and Mulholland Dr as well. Eraserhead is good but definitly not for the masses, you may want to pass on this one unless you like really strange and borderline insane movies. Sexted From My iPad

Saw it a few months ago, thought it was okay. I read the book when it came out, and the whole time I thought it would be close to impossible to turn into a movie. Well, they did it, but toned down the overall content in the process. It is a pretty offbeat story (but nothing like "Fight Club"), so I am not sure if you would enjoy it. I love everything and including extremely offbeat stories but I did hear the book was far more superior than the movie. I have liked your input on nonporn movies so far so an easy thumbs up or thumbs down would help me :) Sexted From My iPad

By the way turboshaft, speaking off off beat stuff and I posted earlier that I rented the series, "twin peaks'. Well, I am finally watching it (season 2, disc 2) and I love it so far. Did u ever get a chance to watch the series? If not, you should seriously check it out, a great story with great eccentric characters! Sexted From My iPad

Ah Twin Peaks. I second that recommendation.
I finally watched the series about 2 years ago and I loved it. Seriously, I think that the first season of twin peaks has to be the best season of a television show ever. It got a little weird in the second season though. You could check out the feature film Fire Walk With Me after you watch the series. It's not great, but just okay. It's a prequel that might spoil some of the plot if you haven't seen the entire series.

Yeah I have Fire walk with me in queue for after I watch the whole series and you are right, the second season gets a bit strange (I'm on season 2, disc 3). There are getting more and more awkward moments as time goes on but I love it so far. I did hear the killer is revealed in season 2 and there are still quite a few episodes after this which I find to be quite strange if this is true. But, I love the strangeness of the series so far! I have seen most of David Lynch's films but never the "Twin Peaks" series or the movie, so maybe one of these days, I hope.

As far as "Choke"...thumbs up. I enjoyed it, and I think I set myself up to just accept that it could not match the book but I still thought parts of it were quite funny.

I read Palahniuk's "Snuff" recently and would love to see it turned into a film, though the plot basically revolves around the shooting of a big gangbang porno, so maybe I should just watch some behind the scenes videos. David lynch wanted to drag the suspense of who killed Laura Palmer out for a lot longer(maybe forever), but the network forced him. I would have gladly watched more. I believe he also quit working on the series halfway through the second season.

I enjoyed Twin Peaks when it came out, but I don't know of I still would. It was offbeat beyond belief, but the characters were very captivating. How often does playing a corpse launch an acting career? Sheryl Lee and Kevin Costern are the only two that come to mind. I wished that they could have ended the show on TV. The movie was all right and it did answer the questions but it laked the finesse and style that the TV show had. Long live the Brown Coats.

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but I thought this thread would be as good as any of the other non-porn movie threads and better than the now gigantic 13 page-long Upcoming Movie Thread.

Anyway, I read a Slate.com article about director Steven Soderbergh and his really varied filmography, which has a little bit of everything if you've never checked his work out. From his early indie "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," to the star studded Ocean's movies to the low budget "The Girlfriend Experience," starring Sasha Grey (yes, that Sasha Grey ), he's done a lot of different movies.

And not to give anything away in the article, but if you make it to the end (it's kind of a long read) it mentions how Soderbergh "knows from masturbation; indeed, he's a devoted connoisseur of pay-per-view hotel porn." You gotta respect him for that--an Oscar-winning Hollywood director who still appreciates the adult arts! "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I recently read that he'd considered Lindsay lohan for a part in an upcoming movie called Magic mike and either Lindsay or Lindsay and her mother were such demanding A..hole that he crossed Lindsay's name from his list and says that he will never consider her for any other roles.

This could have been a great part for her and would have been a nice way for her to get noticed as an actress and not as a drunk or drugged out loser.

There is a rumour that he wants to retire after doing a Liberace biopic. If he does ten we only have 3 possible Soderbergh movies left to see. Long live the Brown Coats.
