Is Internet Porn going to Hell in a handbasket?

Porn is big business (Even bigger than Harry Potter,I'd say)
But seriously, beyond conventional thinking, Porns' seductive power and influence is incalculable; so much so even our Government gives it plenty space.
But Internet Porn isn't. It's still in its infancy and flushed with good tidings. But ultimately even it will be riding off into the sunset to join it's predecessors.

The Predecessors as I know it:
First there was the dirty-picture "French cards," circulating about the workplaces and school yards.
Then there were the Vintage films, some of which is still alive in the business.
"Adult films" wherein theaters featuring soft-core emerged, after which quickly succumbing to the hard stuff as the latter 19th century was closing.
VCR recorders out-drew them by giving porn lovers the privacy of watching what they wanted at home.
Adult book stores then cashed in, crashing the party with in-home cassett rentals for the VCRs.
Broadcast Television, a family oriented vehicle obligated to tamed fare, had to wait in the wings until allowed to open strictly enforced pay-for-view porn channels.
Dreams finally came true for porn aficionados with the explosive expansion of the computer giving birth to the internet. It was inevitable this consummate medium would lovingly embrace porn, as we know it today.
But, as absurd as one announcing Rome would fall in its declining days of power ....so it did, passing the torch to a waiting successor.
All this simply says -- maybe sooner than later -- something's coming along and shift "internet Porn" to the back burner...not turn it off, mind you, just leave it on low heat to simmer.

Technology, being what it is today, any thoughts of what could possibly supercede or technically trump Internet Porn? Should our worthy Webmasters have other irons on the fire? Edited on Nov 08, 2010, 12:37am

Simply put, I believe Internet porn will be around longer than you or I.

The next big thing in porn could be virtual reality, but that will probably first be made available through the Internet. And then home units could be introduced, but I would imagine that an Internet connection would provide a greater, more satisfying experience than a home-based unit.

And we might still be around to see it happen, at least in the early stages.

Porn will always be around. And what you're describing are just methods of getting a product from point A to point B. Each successive one more efficient than the last.

Now with the internet, an image originating in, say, Europe, within a few seconds time can be in every home in the world. That is pretty damn efficient. Whether the device on the consumer end is a computer web browser, an iphone, a tivo-like device, etc., the internet will be the method of delivery.

So...

Are you saying the internet will not be used, or the current website subscription model will not be used...

The only wildcard is how many people will be willing to pay how much for porn going forward. If the answer is "enough" then internet porn will be here for a very long time. If the answer is "not enough" then there will not be a successor.

Yours and lkfireaway's comments have extraordinary merit.
I think what I should've conveyed more strongly was not so much "the Internet" per se, but with more emphasis on the "transmission" of sight and sound.
I believe ikfireaway is right on track with this "virtual reality" concept. Sight configuration and feel, as well as other enhancements are the rule here. I don't know how they're going to do it, or when, or if at all, but a litmus test of major advancments in electronics simply has to be in the works to improve on what we already have. Of course we aren't privy to that, we just wake up one morning and read in the paper where there's a spectacular development in visual electronics that's going to re-shape the entertainment media.

Porn goes back way beyond the French postcards.

Some classic masters are the porn of their era (eg Rubens )
It was just that only the rich could afford to be that ostentatious with it.

Hell, there are probably pornographic cave drawings around too.

Porn will always mutate over time.

I think the internet based version will be with us for quite some time yet though.

You mean everyone will start wearing mood rings again?

A possible update in this age of electronics would be a penis-sizer, that changes color with the length of that vital organ.

Considering that most of the world doesn't even have an internet connection you can bet your battered porn desensitized member that porn will be around for a long, long time. When something appeals to such a basic instinct it's not going any where until evolution decides it made a mistake and erases homosapians from its memory banks.

I think that the internet is just a means of delivering the porn, much like the past media were simply the delivery method. The internet may evolve in the future, but it won't go away. And since it won't be going away the evolution will only change how it is delivered. Virtual reality or bio-feedback may be on the horizon somewhere, and when that happens porn will likely be among the first to use it for commercial applications.

Maybe the bigger issue with the viability of the internet as a means of delivering porn is more a problem with it as a business model. If the piracy issue can be resolved without penalizing those of us who do support the creation of new stuff with our cash, that may signal a big shift for online porn.

I think the relevant fact here is that porn is now digital and because of that it CAN be transmitted via the internet.
I think the future of porn and digital media is that we as users, can now maipulate it.
I regularly cut up my HD mov and wmvHD files into NEW movies just the way I like them.
I think the future is customized porn! What every you want, just download the parts you need and assemble the perfect video.
A free software download called "movica" lets me do it.

I also resize the stills I have downloaded in photoshop, so I have the closeups I want.

A real-time re-enactment of Westworld ..1973 film starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin.

Porn has frequently been the driving force pushing the technology forward. I've often heard experts say that video streaming over the web initially only caught on because of porn, otherwise the technology would have never received the huge level of development which lead to what we have today. Adult sites were routinely streaming video before Hollywood got in on the act. Porn users are usually the ones demanding better picture quality, HD video etc.

The porn industry isn't just bigger than Harry Potter, it's bigger than Hollywood. It's estimated that the porn industry grossed $60 billion in 2009 (with the US making up almost 25% of that!), whereas Hollywood grossed about $10-15 billion (depending on who's figures you use). Very impressive numbers. And coming from those whose insight is formidably greater than the common generic porn user, I'd say we all could learn a thing or two from you guys....I'm using the plural pronoun here because I don't want to leave out our in-house encyclopedia of porn....(among other things).....the inimitable Khan.

Anyway, Ed....with all the billions romancing porn, do you suppose they would consider squrrel's suggestion.
Just a little pocket change from those guys could do it:
We put the money in, and the life-like beautiful robot "puts out."

And technically it wouldn't even be cheating! Still, I can see the reaction of my wife if she should open the closet door where I keep the robot: "What the h...?!?! Get that artificial hussy out of here or I'm gone!" I think I'll keep my extra hard drives instead!

I just posted a response to a comment on a gaping site. My responses were emotional and perhaps I should delete them, but I'm not going to. Not at the moment at least.

I have always been upfront about my dislike for hardcore porn. To my mind it stopped being erotic back in the eightees, and has been increasingly geared towards the sicker tastes of my fellow adult male humans.

I can hardly stand to watch trailers anymore because of the presence of beefed-up primates with above-average endowments brutalizing young women, and getting paid for it. This is NOT a racial thing. Most of the shit I saw today and in recent times was committed by bald-headed, tattooed, white gorillas who looked like they were temporarily unshackled in order to "perform" on camera for the sickening tastes of men with credit cards worldwide.

I feel for the poor young women who get into this kind of work for quick cash, I feel for their fathers and brothers, and for the people who love them; I feel even worse for the poor girls who actually enjoy being brutalized by their male counterparts.

Disgusting, vile, evil, nasty, yuck. Sex is a beautiful thing, not the twisted, grotesque, aggressive, angry, beastial freakshow that is modern, Internet porn. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Edited on Nov 18, 2010, 08:11pm

See ya guys. After I post this I'm deactivating my account. I will not give another single red cent to the porn industry. I can't in good conscience support an industry that fattens itself on the continued and increasing dehumanization and defamation of women.

Listen guys, you like porn because you like sex, right? How can you give your money to webmasters and site-owners who continually crank out material which makes a mockery of sex, which caters to the aggressive, reptilian, patriarchal Brute that lurks in every man's brain, the Brute which millions of years of evolution and thousands of years of enlightenment, civility, reason, and rationality has worked so hard to bury and keep in chains?

Carl Sagan was right. We are at a point where our intelligence and our passions are in delicate and precarious balance. Our technology has made it so that every man, even he of the most humble trade, can sit down and for a few dollars gain access to visions of barbarity and brutality, to a world where the female is not a beloved opposite to be courted and won but a thing to be beaten and conquered and humiliated. It's taken us a very long time to put that nasty Neanderthal, who dwells within each and every one of us, in his rightful place. The porn industry is doing everything it can to bring that ancient, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging ancestor back into the light of day, and I can no longer financially support such a terrible goal.

Be well. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

@WeeWillyWinky

Well, I think you'll find that many PU'ers are very outspoken against the Neanderthal behaviour you describe. Speaking for myself, I quickly decided not to do business at sites that catered to that sort of thing, because I find their material revolting and a complete turn off.
Instead I stick to sites/companies that are either more "couples friendly" (e.g. Naughty America) or focus completely on the women (e.g. Sweetheart, Girlfriends, Triangle, KissMeGirl). If tour, trailers, reviews or comments give the impression that a site's material involves big boners slapping women around or otherwise degrading them, then I won't have anything to do with it and just continue my search elsewhere.
And as long as the porn industry isn't a big socialist collective where your money is shared among all producers regardless of where you made your purchase, then I see that as a viable route for us consumers to take. Vote with your wallop and support the companies who produce what you like and leave the rest alone.

Best wishes to you as well, if you ever read this. Edited on Nov 19, 2010, 03:52am

WeeWillyWinky, I'm sorry to see you go. I hope you will still drop by once in a while, even if it's just to post a "Hi, I'm still alive and kicking" message.

There's a lot that's wrong with porn, but I agree with monty2222, who said it very well: not all porn producers are the same. "Vote with your wallop and support the companies who produce what you like and leave the rest alone."

But if porn in general disgusts you, then it's better to leave it alone.

God bless.

Sorry to see you go, www. I've always enjoyed your company. But I do have to point out that the "Porn Industry" is not monolithic. There are plenty of sites that do not abuse women. I am subscribing to two of them right now and am still desperately seeking for a site where the models do nothing but get undressed out of erotic lingerie, so not all fans of Porn are alike either. And, as someone else suggested, you could actually help "cleaner" sites that are less misogynistic survive if you kept supporting them rather than withdraw altogether.

Along with you I dislike the gorilla "actors" and their brutality with / and degradation of women. I don't get quite as outraged as you because, not being able to look behind the scenes, I usually assume that there is willing co-operation. Be it out of greed, sexual need or masochism, who knows?

If I ever thought there was coercion on the part of any producer then I hope he would be treated like a pedophile or rapist and locked up for a long time.

In any case, be well and I shall miss you.

Sorry to see you go.

All porn is not like that you are ranting against.
I would never subscribe to such sites.

There is a lot of softcore if you look for it.
It is just that it is buried under a maelstrom of lowest common denominator cheap skate nasty hard core.

I do hope you will look in from time to time.

Golly, Willie, this is, indeed, bad news.
I've been a member here for only less than a year, and I can say in all sincerty that your presence and participation, as well as a select number of other actives in our forum, has been a linchpin of support helping fuel my passion for this site.
You need to be reminded that your posts have been read by many thousands, as well as a respectful and crowning number of replies to your threads. And because of that, the things here you're so up-in-arms about are being effectively addressed. We can't afford that big a void in the kind of subject matter we have the good fortune of getting from you. It's clear this means you're hurting your cause more by leaving than staying and fight with the rest of us to make our voices heard. We may not be getting knockouts, but we're scoring points with jabs at those who're steppin' on the toes of a genre that needs help.

I really hope you re-consider. If not, the chances are good we'll see you back.

Porn is going to be around for quite sometime. The mechanism of delivery is always going to vary. 8mm, beta, VHS and DVD. Now you have internet porn being moved toward the much anticipated IPTV. Set top boxes like Roku or embedded applications on your tv are the wave of the future. If your webmaster is worthy then hes already researching his way to wade into thee waters.

I know its hard to get my girl to have any interest in porn thats on the computer but you push that stuff up to a bigger screen with quality resolution then you have a lot better chance of gaining her interest.

Its also fun to have your own version of Mystery Science Theatre 2000 if its you and the guys checking it out. If you cant hang out with the babes you might as well watch them.

Good to run into you again Kahn!
Bio feedback / haptic is something I think your going to see a lot more of.
Sales on this device in the past year is a strong indication that this is something consumers want.

I think the future hold a totally immersive experience for the viewer and not so far away either.

Hey really - what's this whole deal?
Why the sudden outrage/disbelief/negative thoughts?????

Porn and the industry is up and down - almost like the financial markets - without any real comparison.......but there're still ups and downs.
Ups and downs in the way the content is produced, the way they sell it to us.....and no matter what the consumer will always be there and at this place the consumer got something to say - and quite a lot of site owners/webmasters listen.....

And - no doubt - we are here and the net-porn will outlive most of us....

Anyway: Keep up the progressive way of being a PU. Do not quit! (PU always a PU - you cannot live without it!)

I'd love to know how they came up with a gross profit of 60 billion for porn last year. I don't have any evidence to dispute the figure but 60 billion is a lot of money.

They compare it to Hollywood making 15-20 billions. Are they counting only American studios? Are they counting the money made from download sites, streaming sites, DVD/BlueRay sales, TV/Cable deals? No offense but I'd be willing to say that mainstream media makes significantly more money than porn will ever make. Avatar made over a billion dollars and that's just in theaters. No offense but I'd be willing to say that mainstream media makes significantly more money than porn will ever make. Avatar made over a billion dollars and that's just in theaters.

That number is made up by the media not from the industry.
And its hard to tell as most internet companies are owned by individuals who arent much for broadcasting their income.

Welcome back, WeeWillyWinky. You help to make this a better place.

I even gave you a positive trust rating today, because I had somehow forgotten to do so before. Edited on Nov 22, 2010, 08:45am

Thanks Khan, and thanks to everyone else. Sorry to go off half-cocked (as it were)! Did you ever have one of those moments? I don't know, when you just don't feel like you understand people? It was one of those moments for me. I just felt the overwhelming sense that I didn't understand my fellow men at all (I also had the misfortune to see that "prolapse" is a common tag in hardcore porn searches: disgusting).

Anyway, yes, I will stick around, although the truth is I have cancelled all my subs and am not subscribed to any site at the moment nor will I be in the near future. And I thought about "fighting the good fight" or something like that, but what would it amount to if I joined certain sites just to give them a horrible rating and sling as much invective at them as possible? Well, to my mind that would be soapboxing. If I hung around to make snarky comments to people's reviews, or here in the forum, that would be trolling. I could never do that to a site which has been a shining example of reason, decorum, and good taste on the internet.

I do feel and have always felt that PU and TBP in general have been remarkably civil and intelligent. And I do like adult entertainment, for goodness sake. I like to see naked women as much as the next guy, and probably a good deal more than the next guy!

And it is also true that there is no monolithic, giant collective called The Porn Industry (as someone pointed out to me but which I knew in my libertarian heart-of-hearts anyway). The porn industry is a group of private, competing businesses, and it would do the companies that produce decent content a grave disservice to be lumped in with those that crank out nothing but vile, disgusting garbage.

See you around. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Don't sweat it. You should see the posts I make on other forums If I repeated what one pornographer recently said to me regarding prolapse porn, you'd freak out even more so

And I think the comment "fighting the good fight" meant supporting the style of porn you like, and occasionally voicing your opinions about the style of porn you hate when the opportunity arises.

There are a lot of people within the "porn industry" who are trying to change things for the better too, that style you hate so much, is a relatively minor niche. I mean, look at it, there are just a few sites that feature it, while there are thousands of soft porn sites. It's just that the site that is currently in front of you, is the only one you're thinking of at the present.

Plus my other theory of porn forums goes like - those who are content with what is out there, just go out and enjoy what is out there. Those who are not satisfied with what is being released are the ones who hang out on forums. Hence you'll find a disproportionally high number of freaks on porn forums (or performing porn searches) than is what is the true representation of us all.

Good lord, I don't think even I want to know what's the defense of that genre, and I'm using the term loosely, and why he/she's defending it! "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Welcome back WeeWilly, we've got to have the folks from Arizona represent! Oh, I guess I should change my profile...

With respect to justme's post, I think this type of degrading hardcore is much more common in the hardcore realm than just a few sites. While there are many softcore sites that present material in an erotic, non-deprecating fashion, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find hardcore sites that do the same. Euro porn used to pretty free of this type of material, but lately it has been creeping into those sites as well, sites I like. This style of hardcore seems to becoming more common rather than less, which would seem to speak to what the majority of porn purchasers want. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.
Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Wonderful woman. We're all, we're all very fond of her. Very free-spirited.

Jus' wanted you to know, WeeWilly, that last, profound, treatise you granted us, elicited a tear or two from these weary old eyes.
That should give you some indication of the power of your words. And it's that kind of power we need around here to keep the "good fight" roaring.
