Thoughts about the PU points system.

This is just tossing out an idea that PU originally started with but never implemented. PU used to state that the points system would function with earned points expiring after a year or two. In other words, your points ranking would go down after a year or two because your reviews would essentially expire. This system was never started and no longer seems to be the policy.

I was just pondering this and wondered why it was never implemented? Let me start by saying that I have no problem with the points system as it currently exists; I have no aspirations to be "numero uno" here and never will be under any points system. However, my thought is that if people stop contributing or quit coming here then why should their points remain the same. In other words, why not let newer, more active members move up the rolls?

In terms of badges and the weekly drawing there would no problem. I could see creating two levels for points. One level would be your "current points" (points for reviews in the last year or two) and "lifetime points" (points earned since signing up at PU).

Your "lifetime points" would count towards earning your hardcore badge and that would always stay with you. That way, if it takes you 10 years to reach your hardcore badge, you'll still get credit for your effort. Your "current points" would just reflect your activity level in the last year or two and would affect your points ranking (you can find this on the bottom left of the PU home page with the link to the full rankings).

Maybe I'm just alone in wondering if this might be an entertaining change or am I making a fuss over nothing. Anyone elses thoughts? Edited on Mar 27, 2009, 03:42pm

Sounds like a good idea. It encourages newer more active members, and reflects their more recent contributions, but any changes take time and money to implement. It wont affect me, as I will always be numero settantuno anyway.

TheSquirrel, your points ranking is dynamic, not static, so you will not remain numero settantuno (71) forever. As you gain more points over other people, or other people gain more points over you, your ranking will change over time.

I doubt that the current system was the result of intense planning, but at least partially the result of human nature: we make a wonderful plan to follow, but then, as time goes on, don't follow the plan exactly, because we are doing other things along the way.

The PU staff spent time setting up a software program to rank members on a scoring system. The staff said, (Wittyguy quoted): "that the points system would function with earned points expiring after a year or two." But then no software program was put into place to use that idea.

I think it's that simple. No grand design. The PU staff just essentially thought that the current scoring system was acceptable, as is.

That's my idea.

Now Khan or someone else from PU staff will probably come along and crunch me over the head for putting ideas or words into their mouth or head, and state their version of the truth.

As for ideas, my opinion is: My all-time favorite icon from Wittyguy is Mr. Head-up-his-ass. That was a classic, and I was sorry to see it retired. Mr. Porn is OK, but nowhere close to Mr. Head-up-his-ass in points ranking or style or just plain cool.

But since Wittyguy is the man in charge, he gets to choose (and change) his personal icon as he sees fit.

Good thing I'm not in charge of PU staff. Lol. Edited on Mar 27, 2009, 07:59pm

I can agree with that WittyGuy. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

Yes, the original plan was to have points expire along with reviews. Of course, that's not how things turned out. As it came up on the first year, we talked about it and decided that reviews would be archived after two years, not one. We also discussed the plan to remove points but felt users wouldn't be in favor of losing points (and possibly badges). So, we dropped the idea of points being removed when your old reviews were archived.

The new idea of two point systems is interesting, but to some degree, sounds like you want the best of both worlds. You want to keep all points (and badges) when it comes to earning raffle tickets but you also want to earn the top spots (though with less points) based on recent activity only. hmmmmmm

As I say, the new (duel point) system is an interesting concept so I wouldn't rule it out as something we might implement at some time down the road. For now, we'll stick with he single point system and trust that those who don't stay active will eventually be surpassed by those who do. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I agree that my little thought is really a best of both worlds idea. The point being is that those who don't regularly contribute or have limited budgets (we only review paysites after all) won't feel like they're being slighted by taking a long time to build up their review base. Obviously, the current system does just that. My only thought was to liven the place up a bit by having the points ranking sytem be more fluid then it currently is.

I guess there may also be some duplicity in wanting to keep badges for drawing purposes while other points expire. Here, I was trying to appease the long term crowd but upon further reflection that doesn't really make sense. Why be rewarded for something you did 5 years ago today? It doesn't work that way too often in real life so why should PU be different. If PU ever did decide to let points expire then I guess badges should go as well. I think that makes sense given that websites change over time so why should a 5 year old review that doesn't even count towards a site's ratings count for a raffle today. In that regard, I repent and agree that Khan has successfully called "Bullshit" on my original concept.

Like I said earlier, it doesn't matter to me how the point system works. I came up with the idea as perhaps a draw for newer members ("Hey, I only need 50 points to be top dog!") as opposed to those of us who are already committed to a long term relationship ;) Maybe I'll suggest this as a poll question to see what others think.

I didn't know there was anything about user points being lost. My understanding always was that user points would be retained, but the site's reviewed would lose their points from the reviews as the reviews aged and expired. I very well could be wrong on that though.

While I wouldn't have a problem with a current points leaderboard, I do wonder if it cheapens the point system. Similar to a few months ago, a martial arts instructor in Sacramento asked me to be a guest at his dojo. I walk in and there are kids there, 12 years old, wearing black belts. It took me nearly daily practice in the martial arts from age 7 to 15 to get my black belt, that these kids received in less than a year of 1 day a week training. I told the sensei that I was very disappointed with him. He is a little older than I am, but was a student of my grandfather, like I was, and to me he had cheapened the very things my grandfather had built his dojo on. I also think it also goes into the everybody deserves a trophy mentality that has drained American kids of their competitive nature.

Really, if a person posted and received say 50 points to become the current leader, they would already be into the top 20 all-time. I would think breaking the all-time top 20 would be as rewarding as being the current leader over the last few months. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. It pays to hang onto raffle winnings until you really want to use them. I suspected that I had raffle winnings that I hadn't used, but I've got a brain like a sieve and hadn't really kept track. I had the e-mails, I knew where they were when I wanted them. I've been thinking for a while about getting a tablet and the Asus Transformer Prime has been quite well-reviewed. So I loaded up my cart at Amazon and started mining for unused raffle winnings. Before I got done, my total out-of-pocket expenses for the tablet I wanted with all the accessories was approx $275 - I Love It!

Thank you, PU/TBP!

So does a tablet replace a notebook or a desktop? Or is it more like an additional device that's nice to have?

The Transformer is a laptop with a detachable screen that is usable as a tablet, neat idea. Personally I don't see the need for a tablet, between my laptop and my phone I have all bases covered. The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Not quite. The keyboard attachment for the Transformer is sold separately for around $100-200, at it's base price it is just a tablet.

FYI, if you click on the winnings amount at the top of any PU page, you go to a new page where all claim codes for your raffle winnings are listed.

That's cool. Why a tablet? Because they're light and can easily be taken anywhere. I find on my job that I travel someplace, carry my laptop that my job issued me - all 10 lbs of the damned thing - get to where I'm going, open it up and Pffffffft, the battery goes dead. On the other hand, my kindle is completely reliable and everybody I know who has an ipad or other tablet loves them and finds them completely reliable. So if I can have something to read and watch movies on and bring to work meetings with a spreadsheet when I'm traveling that I can open and easily access when I need it and take pictures when I want to - the camera in the ASUS is reported as top-notch - then I'll be quite happy. And it plugs into a base that gives it the characteristics of a lap-top. I'd leave the base in my hotel room when traveling and have that option when I'm in the room.
