Computer Problems! I need your technical expertise once again. For the past couple of weeks I have had problems right after I start my PC in the morning. If I don't use it right away the mouse will freeze. At other times after having had my morning coffee I will come into my study and notice that my system experienced the blue screen of death in the meantime. This morning I was in the middle of my first visit to this site when it crashed once again. So, nothing predictable except that all the crashes start shortly after my computer boots. In any case, when I attempted to start it again, Microsoft offered to repair my problem for me but found nothing but a corrupt file that it couldn't repair and when I tried to boot the machine after that cheerful little message I got a long drawn out beep and that was it. I did my usual computer trick and shut off all the power for a minute or so and then tried again and this time all worked as it should. After this long winded introduction, here comes the question. Since these things always happen when I start the computer would it hurt if I used sleep mode in power management (I've never done that) and just left everything on overnight? Thanks! | |

messmer, If your computer crashes on boot, I would assume the cause would be related to some program that is starting up or a driver that is loading. I'd check to see if all of your drivers are up-to-date, and see what programs are launched at startup. Is booting in Safe Mode always stable? Have you tried turning off all the programs that startup automatically? Sleeping might avoid the problem if the computer is stable after the initial boot, as depending on your settings I believe the contents of RAM are either copied to the hard drive or kept using some amount power so the Windows may not try to reload whatever driver or program is causing problems. I have found that after sleeping/hibernating my laptop several times my computer starts running poorly and I have to reboot anyways. This method isn't really solving your problem and may waste electricity, does it randomly crash as well? You can always try reinstalling Windows, which I tend to do from time to time and isn't that big of deal provided you have kept all your programs and drivers in a handy location. I wish I had a dollar for every time Microsoft offered to repair some problem for me in Windows 7. But not once did it ever fix anything, or do anything except waste my time while looking for some solution that never actually helped.  Anyway, like Slutty says, there is probably some hardware/software conflict causing the problem. Did you recently add a new program to your PC? That would seem to be the simplest cause of your problem. Your basic problem seems familiar, from some earlier thread at PU. Maybe Khan could find that thread, because he can search this site far better than I can. Or you can try doing a google search, because this kind of general problem is probably fairly common. But I don't know the basic procedure of how to track down the specific conflict that is causing problems on your PC. | |

Top of the day, sir messmer. Unfortunately, I can't direct you to the magic bullet. But How I handle this problem is exactly what Slutty has stated: Wipe out and Reinstall your operating system. Of course you want to have your files backed up, but what I like about this process is that you have the villins back against the wall ....and your resources to mow them down, like the vermin they are, are at your mercy and a mare click away. If you haven't tried, it might be a good idea to follow Slutty's inquiry about booting into safe mode. Mess around there for a while and see if a miracle occurs. Slutty makes another good point: A mean gremlin might've creeped into your startup. Run msconfig and search for uninvited invaders. I feel your pain, partner. been there myself. Also currently wrestling with suspected keyloggers and hackers. My virus program is toast, as well as leaving roots that I've yet to find a remedy or means to remove.... thereby preventing any other virus program to download.  | |

I'm not sure why I'd be inherently better for searching the forum than you since I use the same search feature that's available to everyone here. The trick to doing a good forum search (if there is one) is to figure out a term that would be in the sought thread but not so much in other threads. For example, I just did a search on "blue screen" and it brought up several threads that might be the ones you're referring to. However, without a little more idea of the thread you're talking about, that's about the best I can offer. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Jeeez, it sounds like a real bummer, sorry for your problems here, messmer. Not that I have THE solution, but still I can just recommend a few things: Like downloading CCleaner: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ This program helped me get through a lot of problems. Then - too - check out your drivers - try to use this: http://www.drivermax.com/ It will show you outdated drivers.........and: It can also help you update the drivers - that COULD cause the problem. Notice that the free Drivermax has a "waiting time" for the downloads of new drivers - be patience... And finally: WHEN you get your PC back to normal (best wishes) get hold of this back-up program: http://www.macrium.com/download.asp It has an easy way to do/burn a boot dics AND lets you make a back up of your C-drive to save on one of your external drives. It's probably the easiest back up program I've come across....... All above is free and has helped me........but still: we all come across new pc-problems now and then, so...? Thanks a lot guys for your helpful suggestions. I have to keep this very short because I experienced the blue screen three times so far today and had a hell of a time to get the computer to start again. I tried starting in safe mode and guess what? Everything froze within a couple of minutes before I could even check for any problems. Tried to take your advice to re-install Windows 7 but don't know how to use the Gateway Recovery Discs (blush). I popped them into the DVD drive with Windows 7 loaded and nothing happened. Can't find an executable file on the first disc, either. Then I tried to do it when starting up, but start up by-passes the DVD disc and starts the normal way. So I went back to a restore point way back .. and guess what? The first message from Microsoft was: that there was an error on my machine but that they couldn't fix it until they accumulated more information. Expecting another blue screen any moment, I remain sincerely yours, technically handicapped, frustrated messmer!!! Oh, only one question: How do I use the recovery discs? HELP! There is a .dat file, would that be the one to start a re-installation of Windows 7? | |

Take it to a trusted technician. There are multiple possibilities as to the cause of your problems, and it's difficult to diagnose the true cause without access to the physical machine to go fishing for more information. There is already enough wrong information within this thread. Take it to a trusted technician. Typically the first step is to pull the hard drive out of the computer and connect it to a different computer and begin looking for potential cuases from there. Very rarely does Windows ever have to be reinstalled. Going at this blind, you might reinstall Windows, wipe out all your data, all your settings, programs, and still not rid yourself of the problem. | |

Dammit, just typed an answer to your question, and accidentally closed the window. Just call me Mr. Butterfingers. You can change the boot priortiy in the BIOS for your computer, usually done by hitting F1, DEL, or ESC right when you turn on the computer to enter the BIOS - there is usually a message saying press "__" to enter setup. Within the BIOS there is usually a tab called boot or something that will let you set the priority for various devices on your computer, just move the DVD drive ahead of the HDD. Then the computer will boot from the recovery disk from Gateway. You can certainly take it to a trusted tech guy, but I am personally too cheap and don't like the idea of someone possibly poking through my shit. I would at least check that all your hardware drivers are current before taking it it, which is pretty easy - just look up all the hardware attached to your computer and find the most recent driver for that component on the company's website (you can usually determine the various components through documentation or on the company's website). Just a report on the latest developments. To slutty: I discovered that Gateway lets you change the start up at the very beginning. So, no problem if I ever want to re-install. To anyonebutme: Regrettably, I don't have a single technician as a friend.  I have been fiddling and fooling most of the afternoon, deleting many programs I hadn't used in ages just in case one of them was causing the conflict.The irony of it all is that only recently I bought a program that will check my system periodically and then download all the latest drivers for me automatically .. it is Microsoft approved, but I got rid of it this afternoon, because, on more than one occasion it would download an earlier version of a driver to the one I already had! Needless to say I always kept the latest version. Another thing I did was to switch from Aero to normal, when it comes to the desktop. Then I also went into the Task Manager and removed some items from there. Tomorrow will tell if any of the things I did will lead to a more stable system. | |
