I'm probably like you, not really a movie buff, but I do have my favorites. I could get the genres wrong.

War movie: I thought Full Metal Jacket was really good, but I'm not real big on war movies, so I don't have a lot to compare it to.

Comedy: I'm with you on Animal House, when my wife and I first met, she had never seen it, being from Puerto Rico, she hadn't seen a lot of movies and her response was, "So, this is why guys go to college?" Yep! The Porkys series was also a favorite of mine and a frat house standard.

Western: While I agree on Clint Eastwood westerns, my dad before passing away used to love this western called, "Trinity" It was a comedy western, but I used to love watching those and saw them on Amazon a few weeks ago, re-released as a DVD box set, it has the two feature films in it. And Blazing Saddles if it was a western.

Sci Fi: I'm going with Aliens, the Alien Quadrilogy is easily one of my favorite box sets, and thank goodness they left the Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem disc out!

Fantasy: I like Lord of the Rings, but I never got into the books, so my pick is Willow.

Action: I don't know if these fall in the Action genre, but I have really enjoyed the last two Batman movies. Also have to have Scarface in here, as cliche as it is, it still ranks up there in my top 3-4 movies. And seriously, anything with Bruce Lee in it.

Drama: Godfather 1, 2, 3

Classics: I love the classic horror movies that had either Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi in them.

Other: I never really understood why, but I really liked Kill Bill and Natural Born Killers My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I am a fan of realistic combat movies. Black Hawk Down, Tears of the Sun and such.

Alien was good. I would like to see them redone exactly, but using newer special effects.

True Lies is also a great movie. I like some of the twisted humor in that movie. Speaking of humor I like to older Adam Sandler movies. His newer ones are pretty gay.

I do have a large collection of movies, although not as large as mt porn collection. Probably in the area of a thousand. I believe a heard of some of you guys having larger collections. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

Thanks wittyguy. Another great subject. Some of my choices are a little obscure since they are older and sometimes not even on dvd or VHS.

Sci-Fi: Forbiden Planet(by far my favorite movie), Total Recall, Aliens, When Worlds Collide, The Black Hole, I Robot, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Last Starfighter, Dark City.

Fantasy: The Lord of The Rings trilogy(extended version), all the Sinbad movies, Price Valiant, Excalibur, Jack the Giant Killer,

War: Full Metal Jacket, Where Eagles Dare, Platoon,

Romantic Comdies: It Started with Eve(amazing), Joe Versus the Volcano(possibly the best pairing of Tome Hanks and Meg Ryan), The Cutting Edge, Torrid Zone,

Comedies: Spaceball, Blazing Star, The Return of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again,

Cowboy: Almost anything with Clint, John Wayne or Audi Murphy

Adventure: The Naked Jungle, King of The Khiber Rifles

Horror: The Fog(the original), Halloween, Alien, Coma

Medival time: Kingdom of Heaven(extended version)

Hard to claissify but still thought provoking: Charlie, Gattaca. Long live the Brown Coats.

I've lost track of the number of times I've watched Jesus Christ Superstar. And, as long as it is, I know I've watched Dances with Wolves at least 20 times. Bet those two won't be repeated here! :laughs: Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

The Matrix (the first one) is one of my all-time favorites. Also, in no particular order because I'm lazy right now:
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Amelie (the French film)
The Outlaw Josie Wales
Apocalypse Now (Hey, Wittyguy!)
The Doors (about the band, by Oliver Stone)
Blazing Saddles
The Producers (the original and the remake -- both are hilarous)
Big (the Tom Hanks film directed by Penny Marshall)
Charlie Wilson's War
The Maltese Falcon (Bogart!)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Scarface (with Al Pacino; an "American Dream" story)
Midnight Cowboy (very daring for its time; another American Dream story along with the "frontier" aspect, except the guy heads east instead of west, teams up with Rizzo and then they "head south" and Rizzo deep-sixes it)
In the Heat of the Night (a post hoc addition; thanks to Denner for reminding me)

Sure, there's more, but that's enough for now. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Mar 25, 2009, 04:23am

Great post by the way, I am a lover of all things video and I think this really gets others to get to know everyone else even better.

My list:

Action:
Very hard category for me consdering there are so many out there. My favs (in no particular order): So Close (Hong Kong), Kill Bill #1, Moon Child (Japanese, kinda hybrid action/sci fi as it involves vampires and the future), The Duel (Hong Kong)

War Movie:
Toss up between full metal jacket and saving private ryan. Two totally different wars, but stay pretty true.

Western:
Tombstone is my #1. However, I've always liked the good, the bad, and the ugly too. Also, Sukiyaki Western Django (Japanese) is an interesting take on a western film.

Comedy:
Space Balls hands down. I think I know every line and scene from that movie by heart. Notables: Bio Zombie (Hong Kong) it is a comedy/horror mish mash but great fun, Tremors, The 40 year old virgin, Animal house, hot shots 1 and 2, loaded weapons

Horror:
This is hard for me cause it's one of my favorites. It's another one that has so much but you have to take it for what it is. My notables: Poltergeist, The thing, A tale of two sisters, Audition (Japanese).

Drama:
Vanilla Sky. I love this movie (I know Tom Cruise, ugh, but he does a great job for what he is supposed to be, a narcissistic rich man). Shinobi (Japanese) is great too. Notable: Rules of Attraction.

Sci Fi/Fantasy:
Aliens hands down. Can't get any better than this, probably another film I know hands down (lines and all. Others: Battle Royale (Japanese), Star Wars, Alien, Zu Warriors, Godzilla: All out monster attack, Predator.

Suspense:
The Suicide Club (Japanese). Absolutely intriguing. Notables: Anything David Lynch, Oldboy (Japanese), Spider Forest.

Whew. That took me a long time to actually come up with :)

I see there are a few people here who found the Lord of the Rings trilogy favorable. I just never understood why people found these movies and the story so great. I read the books as a child and even again quite recently when the movies came out, I just don't find the story as great as everyone seems it to be. I will give kudos to the movies staying true to the books which is a rarity and most of the visual effects being superb; I just can't see it as being the 'greatest' out there due to the story. Yes, the book was written a long time before most contemporary fantasy novels of this genre were so mainstream, but it is by far not even close to the best. I am just wondering why everyone likes this story? I can name 2 authors that should get a movie trilogy before this one did: Robert E. Feist and Robert Jordan. Any thoughts/opinions? Aw man, I forgot about Dark city. I just re added that to my netflix account. I remember that being absolutely great and thought provoking. Nice choice in Gattaca, that was another film that was pretty good and kinda forgotton about.

War: It is a toss up between "Apocalypse Now" and "Platoon." They are very different so I just choose both.

Comedy: I am pretty picky here, as I can't stand most of today's comedies. I like a lot of Chaplin films, particularly "The Great Dictator" and "Modern Times." Also, Mel Brooks' work can be very hilarious. Favorites: "Young Frankenstein" and "Silent Movie." Oh, and "Dr. Strangelove."

Western: Yeah, Clint Eastwood is probably my favorite here too, as well as "The Magnificent Seven."

Sci-Fi/Fantasy: "2001: A Space Odyssey" and the first three "Star Wars," though I think there is more than a world of difference between Lucas and Kubrick.

Action/Adventure: "Jaws" is easily my top pick, as well as the first two "Terminator" films, plus the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. "Heat," and the first and third "Die Hard" movies are all good too.

Drama: If David Lynch counts here, then "Blue Velvet" and "Lost Highway" are notable, though they might be more thrillers than dramas, plus Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and "Goodfellas."

Suspense Thriller: Alfred Hitchcock hands down. It is going to take me a while to think of anyone else.

Classics: Humphrey Bogart's films are entertaining; "Casablanca," and "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" are probably my favorites. Also, Hitchcock's work is nearly all classics too.

Horror: I like brains over blood since it requires filmmakers to be creative rather than just lazy, so "The Silence of the Lambs" is my favorite. I also like "The Shining." Fun post. Here's my list:

War Movie: I whole-heartedly agree with Wittyguy on "Apocalypse Now" and "Patton". I'll throw in "Glory" and "Braveheart".

Comedy: I enjoy a lot of the dumb, physical humor like "Tommy Boy" and "Happy Gilmore". On the flip side "Swingers" is also a favorite.

Western: "Young Guns", "Unforgiven" and "Tombstone".

Sci-Fi / Fantasy: I'm a big sci fi fan so this is a toughie. I'll go with "Planet of the Apes", "The Matrix" & "Serenity".

Action Movie: "The Road Warrior" (2nd Max Max movie), "Blade" (1st movie) and my recent favorite "Wanted"

Drama: "Goodfellas", "Momento" and "Silence of the Lambs".

Horror: "Prince of Darkness" and any of the Hellraiser movies.

Let me add a few more to the list:

To catch a Thief: Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Might be nice to see a remake but knowing Hollywood they would only screw it up.

Charade: Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

Sabrina: Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart.

The Fountain Head: Gary Cooper and Nancy Neal

People will talk: Cary Grant and Jeanne Crain

Hot Fuzz: Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Lake Placid: Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda. Long live the Brown Coats.

I just wanted to mention I'm very surprised no one has put a STAR TREK film in this list, considering that huge thread going on :) Or, maybe the films stink compared to the series?? WELL!!!??? :)

I enjoyed the Star Trek movies but they miss the cut for my favorites list. If I had to pick a favorite from all the Trek movies I'd go with Undiscovered Country.

I prefer "ST II: The Wrath of Khan" -- it's Shatner at is best (or possibly worst, depending on your point of view), plus the story is pretty interesting; I have always thought it was pretty smart to bring back a character from the original series and its plot continues through III and IV. I'm a big porn fan, of course, and I'm also a big fan of Classic Movies - film noir, screwball comedies, 30's and 40's Hitchcock. The studio system is good for porn - look at the likes of Evil Angel & Jules Jordan and the network of porn pros that congregate around those studies and support each other - and it was good for making non-porn films. The writing was tight, the camera work was tight, the editing was tight, the acting was tight.

I pretty much can't stand modern "comedy" films - especially the stuff that came out of the Saturday Night Live crew. It's just watching a bunch of coke-heads that think they're really hot to me.

But the screwball comedies of Preston Sturges, WC Fields, The Marx Bros and that stuff had real skill and was clever and is still hilarious stuff to me. Judd Apatow is bringing back some of that, to me - I've enjoyed his stuff quite a bit.

Recent movies I liked - The Wrestler and that Danny Boyle movie, Slumdog Millionaire, were both great.

I noticed someone mentioning Unforgiven -brilliant film. Eastwood's a great director. I haven't seen his most recent films. I will when they're on cable.

Me, I don't really have a few favorites. I couldn't even narrow it down to a few dozen. See, I'm an avid movie watcher and have a pretty big collection. I like different ones based a lot on what mood I'm in or what's going on around me at the time. I like different movies for different things ... this one the acting .. that one the story ... maybe another for the overall feeling the movie leaves me with.

Some of the ones I really like (read: watch again and again) have been mentioned here already. For example:
The Matrix (the first one)
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Kill Bill (both)
The Unforgiven
Die Hard
Aliens (own the boxed set)
Lake Placid
Joe Versus the Volcano
Jesus Christ Superstar (mainly for the music, I suspect)
... just to highlight a few.

Then there's another batch that I haven't seen mentioned ... some being very old ones.

Lost Horizon
Mid-Mummer's Night Dream (1935 version w/ Micky Rooney as Puck)
Prospero's Books (loose adaptation of The Tempest)
Taming of the Shrew (Talyor/Burton)
Yojimbo
Seven Samurai

And still a few others I enjoy again and again ...

The Princess Bride
13th Warrior
Gladiator (love the opening scene)
V for Vendetta (watch every Nov 5th)
Meet Joe Black
Armageddon
The 5th element
The Last Boy Scout
Practical Magic

... and the list could go on and on. See what I mean about me being an avid movie watcher?

BTW, while I thought the Lord of the Rings trilogy were ok movies and agree, the special effects were fantastic ... I disagree with most that it closely followed the books. I'm a big fan of the book and have to agree with the screen-writers when they said something to the effect, "Tolkien would roll in his grave to see the changes we made". IMO, if you really want to enjoy the story, get a copy of the unabridged audio books.

As an aside ...
While I liked the StarTrek, "Wrath of Khan", I'm not as enamored with it as some would think. Probably because I adopted my nom de' plum from Genghis Khan many years ago (that's another story for another day).

I am an anime megafan and I didn't want to get involved with that here :) Even though there are some good animation movies that are not in the realm of 'anime', I thought I'd just stick to film. However, I suppose I have to agree on Heavy Metal, I love that movie. I think I added a Heavy Metal movie that just came out kinda recent to my netflix queue. I think it is called Heavy Metal 2000 or something. Hopefully it's somewhat as good as the original.

Heavy Metal 2000 is very very very different from the original. If you pretend it has no relation to the earlier movie, then you'll enjoy it just fine I think. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Beauty and the Beast (1991)? Really? I always felt that it got lots of attention because the Oscars overlooked The Little Mermaid (1989) a couple years earlier. It had much more memorable songs in my opinion :-)

In the realm of Disney, I'd also add Fantasia (1940) and Dumbo (1941). As highly disturbing as the latter is, it's still a damn good piece of art.

Pixar is quite good and while I thoroughly enjoyed Cars (2006), I'd certainly peg Finding Nemo (2003), Monsters, Inc. (2001) and Toy Story (1995) as better films as they didn't forget their adult audience as much. I don't mean "adult" humor, just better references, jokes that require a bit more knowledge & experience than your average kid is going to have. Kids are easy to please, I like it when animated films have a bit more subtlety in their humor. I enjoyed WALL·E (2008) a great deal as well but it owed too much to its predecessors - like Charlie Chaplin and Short Circuit (1986). I hope they hit it better with Up (2009).

One of my favorite animated films of recent years is The Incredibles (2004) - that had a pretty even mix of humor for every audience.

Of course, as GCode pointed out, Anime opens a whole realm of films too, though many I'd say are way overrated. None-the-less, I really enjoyed Ghost in the Shell (1995) and of course the epic Escaflowne TV Series (2000). Cowboy Bebop (1998) was good fun too, especially when it wasn't dubbed. I hate bloody dubbing. Hmmm, Vampire Hunter D (2000) was fun too. It is just important to think of Anime more as action movies and not get too hung up on the plot, otherwise you'll often get disappointed. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

On a side note to all involved, I will create up a list of favorites, but it is going to take a serious time investment (over 3000 to choose from, weee!!!), so I'll tackle that tomorrow. That said, I think I'll go watch this French Bond parody I just got.

Cheers. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I didn't like "The Little Mermaid". In part, because I saw a previous version where the mermaid looses her voice and the prince. If I remember correctly she also dies of saddness. Mumm that sucks. That pretty much bumped me out for all subsequent versions.

I've always liked the story of Beauty and the beast. There have been so few versions made that I was glad they finally got around to making one. Of course the best is still the 1946 one with Jean Marais as the Beast.

I'm waiting for a Robotech movie. I know there was one last year, but that wasn't enough for me. I liked the Escaflowne series. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm waiting for a Robotech movie. I know there was one last year, but that wasn't enough for me. I liked the Escaflowne series.

Yeah, they seriously changed the story for the Disney version. Hans Christian Andersen's version had her basically commit suicide because she would not slay the Prince and let his blood drip on her feet to turn her back into a mermaid. She instead she dissolves into the sea. Perhaps later gaining a soul and gaining entrance into the Christian heaven, or not, there is debate about that.

Anyway, being a musicals fan, I liked the songs much more in Disney's Little Mermaid as opposed to Beauty and the Beast. Or almost any of the following animated, musical features. Like that blasted Lion King. That was ridiculously overrated. Still, Disney can be fun, no doubt. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

There was an episode of "Beauty" on Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Starring Susan Sarandon and Klaus Kinski, based on Beauty and the Beast. On TV around 1984. I thought it was enjoyable. The entire series was quality entertainment for both children and adults, and lasted several years in the 1980s. The Beauty episode was not as sugary as the Disney version, Sarandon was lovely, and Kinski was Kinski.

Klaus Kinski on a show that children were supposed to watch? That's daring, lol I imagine a few nightmares were fueled by that. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

I remember that; Disney later rebroadcast a lot of Faerie Tale Theater, and I remember them as being pretty good, especially since they do not have musical numbers like nearly every Disney animated film has. In fact, I remember a disturbing one with Robin Williams as the prince who is turned into a frog. I remember it being a pretty weird costume (and he still might have been on drugs then).

One of my favorite Disney films is probably "Toy Story 2," though the first one is quite good as well. I also like "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" even though it is a musical. I think I let animation pass with musical numbers, but if it is live I generally cannot stand it. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Anchorman springs instantly to mind when I think of comedies. I can't help but find Will Ferrell funny, I could watch him reading a paper and still laugh my ass off.

My fave superhero movie has got to be the Incredible Hulk, the new one, not that Ang Lee one a couple of years back.

Normally my "favorite movie of all time" changes every week but for some reason the above two stay in my thoughts more than any other movies.

Oh, a big shout out for that new Liam Neeson Spy-Film, 'Taken'. Although it's too early to say, Taken could be the best action movie I have ever seen. Seriously, it is that good, I wouldn't lie to you I swear!!! http://www.SeriousMistressesForums.com

Khan's mention of watching V For Vendetta every year made me think of movies that I crave at least once a year.

V for Vendetta's isn't one for me, but..

Seven Samurais for sure - one of the most entertaining and flat-out best films ever

Pulp Fiction - I'm a big fan of Tarantino - his cultural references show that he's seen the same films as I have and he does amazing things for his actors.

Armageddon - it's cheesy, rather ridiculous, but the complete entertainment package - humor, action, pathos, spectacle

Die Hard 3 - Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson - can't go wrong with that pair

Fargo - Just listening to the spot-on dialects is a joy, but the acting is all incredible

I saw it twice in theater and I enjoyed both showing. It has more than a few plot holes, but that movie was quite entertaining. The biggest shock I got was when I realised just who the actress is that plays is 18yr old daughter.
26yrs old Maggie Grace. Fans of Lost will remember her has Shannon Rutherford. Long live the Brown Coats.

There was also a version which starred Rebecca De Mornay and Jonh Savage(I've got the DVD). They weren't bad they certainly wouldn't be called very good. I liked Disney's version but I did not like any of the songs except "Be our Guest". Long live the Brown Coats.

Unless you took English literature in College or just love reading very old books, then you aren't likely to realise how many fairie tales are dark and depressing. I've never had a problem with someone bringing sunshine and an Happy Ending to any Fairie Tale.

I'm sitting here trying to remember what happened to Cinderella's Stepmother and step-sisters. I know that it isn't has rose has Disney's version.

The only songs from Disney animated movies that I love are those from Aladin, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
I can struggle through the others, but I don't enjoy them. Long live the Brown Coats.

I do recall they were actually chopping off portions of their feet in an effort to fit the shoe, lol Ah what charming little bedtime tales! "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Join the club. I knew the actress was older than her character of 18 simply because she was playing her way too young to begin with. I hope that the DVD contains more
scenes, because that is a very good movie but plot lines stop and go nowhere.

They could easily make a series of movies using Liam's character. He made the movie. Long live the Brown Coats.

There was talk of a sequel but Liam Neeson's wife died, so I'm not sure where they'll go with it now.

I know one thing, I won't work with anyone else.

Interesting fact, Liam Neeson trained both Batman and Darth Vader. No wonder he's so tough! http://www.SeriousMistressesForums.com

I agree that no other actor could step in.

He also trained Obi-Wan who trained Luke. Long live the Brown Coats.

He also played Kinsey & Darkman... what sort of being would one get with all these skills combined? "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"
