Where to download DRM free music? I recently joined the 21st century by acutally acquiring an MP3 player (slowly but surely dropping my Luddite ways). Anyway, I was recently searching around for sites from which I could ala carte (pick and choose singles) download songs from. When I started looking into a lot of them I quickly became disenchanted. A lot of sites like Rhapsody and others have this fairly inexpensive monthly subscriptions (less than $15) but you can only stream the music. Stuff that you can download goes "poof" when your subscription ends. Basicially, it seems like DRM rules the land now-a-days in the music biz and I'm not terribly happy about it (sorry if I'm coming late to the party here people and telling all of you crap you already know). So, what I'm looking for is a site that is legal (support the musicians you like just like the porn sites you like so they keep making more of it), that has one off songs you can load and then transfer around without restrictions (no DRM b.s.), has a large catalog of artists and songs (not just the old crap either), has, preferably, download options (preferably .wmv files along with .mp3 files in case you actually want quality over quantity) and that have reasonable prices. Am I asking for too much or am I left pissing into the wind? | |

Not sure about the ins & outs of it, or if it fulfills all the specifics of your criteria, but take a look at www.proudmusiclibrary.com It allows free download of bleeped samples prior to purchase. Let me know how you get on. Once I get beyond a CD player I may well want to use it myself. It's a royalty free site, meaning that you don't see any mainstream stuff listed there. They advertise themselves as music for websites, videos, games, etc. Pretty much all unknowns playing unknown songs. Sorry. | |

Hey Wittyguy, A lot of music retailers (Amazon, itunes, Zune, Rhapsody, etc.) are increasingly releasing music in MP3 (or in the case of iTunes AAC, an MP4 format) which are DRM-free. Most audiophiles say the MP4 format Apple uses is better quality than a standard MP3, and is still playable on almost any media player. The subscription services like Zune and Rhapsody will have DRM on the songs you download as part of the subscription service, but often wont have DRM on the songs you purchase. These services don't require streaming, you can download the files to a registered device and play them until the license expires; so you have to refresh the licenses once a month. Be careful if you subscribe to either of these services as they only work with certain MP3 players. One plus with Zune is that you get 10 download-to-own songs every month along with the subscription. Hope that helps. I have the Zune subscription service and it is pretty good, although I usually use iTunes to buy music as they have a larger selection and most if not all of it is DRM free. I've only downloaded song from itunes but then again I have an ipod so it was easier and frankluy I can't complain about paying 1-2$ for a song. You can preview it so it's not like you'll be surpised by what it sounds like. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

The biggest reason I prefer Amazon to iTunes is because it seems like Amazon has a lot more sales on their music. | |

There is the Russian mp3 sites out there that are very inexpensive, but I am not sure about the legality of downloading from them in the USA so I will not mention and URLs here. It is legal in Russia but their copyright laws work a little differently. Some of them have phenomenally large libraries and they allow sampling. So while I do not download from them they are a great place to find new music. If you like most of the songs on a particular album you are better of buying the CD and converting to MP3 yourself. MP3s are a lower quality and can not be increased to a lossless quality, just like downloading porn. I myself like Amazon. They have all the big name songs for anywhere between $.99-$1.29 per song. They are normally the same price as iTunes but sometimes you can find lesser known bands full albums for $3-$5 less then iTunes. The other reason I like Amazon is because MP3's play across all devices, iTunes MP4's, not so much. So in order for me to use iTunes songs, I have to burn to a cd first and then reimport them. Overall more of a pin then what they are worth. I hook my mp3 player up to my car via a auxiliary jack and I myself can't tell any between the cd and the mp3. Maybe I'm just going deaf in my old age but I seriously can't tell the difference between CD, MP3 and a MP4. | |

Thanks I'll take a look. I'm not going to be one of their biggest customer because I already own hunderds of CD's. I'm just looking for a couple of songs from artist that don't really appeal to me but still have that rare song that I must have. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

You might also check out this store. Used it for a variety of projects in the past and am still baffled of the overall quality of their titles. Just to toss in another thought... I have bought many mp3 albums from amazon so far. Though I like they don't have this DRM shit I am still going into actual shops and buy CDs for two reasons: 1. I can still convert the music in the quality I choose 2. I get a booklet with the lyrics etc. I am quite disappointed about the sometimes poor mp3 quality encoding (everything below 200kb/s is awful) and the absence of digital booklets.
