I just realized that it's been a while since I received the PU Newsletter. I know that Rick said a few months back that there would be some changes. Was stopping the PU Newsletter one of those changes? I used to drop by the PU site at least once a day, to read reviews, comments, threads, whatever. When PU announced they would stop the raffle, I wrote that it probably wouldn't make much difference, because most people would still visit the site and still contribute. Well, I was wrong. In a few short months, PU has either gone to sleep, or possibly died. If TBP site is still generating adequate revenue, that's great. There's no way any of us PU members have a clue how the TBP site is doing financially. But judging from the posted activity at the PU site, it seems obvious that this site has declined. If the staff doesn't make some changes, and soon, then PU will become that ghost town that Rick joked about. That would be a shame. It used to be an interesting place to visit. | |

I wasn't expecting it, but it seems like this site has suddenly gotten a lot sleepier since the raffle ended. I'm sure that Rick and maybe some other staff members have access to stats that bear that idea out. Has the revenue generated by the PU site dropped severely as well? If true, maybe you should think about bringing the raffle back, in one form or another. Or bringing out the planned changes immediately, even if they are not completely polished. | |

I don't really understand the mechanics of trying to block internet access to porn sites. skunk lives in the UK, and he says that using a mobile or proxyspy would bypass any internet restrictions. Is it really that simple? And what is proxyspy? If it were that simple, what about China's censorship of the internet? Wikipedia says: Internet censorship in the People's Republic of China is conducted under a wide variety of laws and administrative regulations. In accordance with these laws, more than sixty Internet regulations have been made by the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC), which have been implemented by provincial branches of state-owned ISPs, companies, and organizations.[1][2] The apparatus of the PRC's Internet repression is considered more extensive and more advanced than in any other country in the world. The governmental authorities not only block website content but also monitor the Internet access of individuals. China is not using all those resources, spending millions of dollars (hundreds of millions?) on censoring internet access for something that can be bypassed by using a mobile phone or some proxyspy program. | |

British Prime Minister David Cameron announced Monday that the U.K.'s four biggest Internet service providers will automatically block access to porn sites for both new and existing connections, unless users specifically request that the filters be disabled. The new measures are expected to be in place before the end of the year. "Young people have always been curious about pornography and they have always sought it out," Cameron said in a speech. "But it used to be that society could protect children by enforcing age restrictions on the ground whether that was setting a minimum age for buying top-shelf magazines, putting watersheds on the TV, or age rating films and DVDs. But the explosion of pornography on the Internet—and the explosion of the Internet into children's lives—has changed all that profoundly. It's made it much harder to enforce age restrictions and much more difficult for parents to know what's going on." Forecasting the economic impact of the action on the porn industry isn't proving easy. Globally, porn is a $97 billion industry, according to Kassia Wosick, assistant professor of sociology at New Mexico State University. At present, $10 billion to $12 billion comes from the United States, but it's harder to determine how big a percentage the U.K. represents. A 2006 study by Nielsen NetRatings, however, found Britain to be the world's fastest growing pornography market—with almost 40 percent of the country's male population visiting porn sites at least once a year. That's due in part to the country's already stringent policies on adult content. (Television is restrictive about what can be shown and adult DVDs sold are often censored versions.) For people wanting to see hardcore porn, the Web is often the best option. "It's going to hurt the big boys," said Ogi Ogas, author of "A Billion Wicked Thoughts," a pop psychology book. "They're going to feel it. It will probably help places like Tumblr and such, where amateurs are free to publish whatever they want. Corporations are going to suffer." While no one is willing to project specific financial losses, most agree that the company most likely to be affected by these restrictions is Manwin, which controls the Brazzers and RealityKings collection of websites as well as several adult "tube" sites (think Youtube for porn). "It will be very easy to block these tube sites," said Ogas. "Those account for the vast majority of people's online porn use." U.S.-based porn companies say they're bracing for a potential hit, but won't know how big a disruption it will be until a few details about the opt-in process for viewing adult content online are made clear. "I'm not sure what you're going to see when you go to those sites now," said Michael Klein, president of LFP Inc., which owns and oversees the Hustler empire. "The only sites you're affecting are the ones who already have [age verification] precautions in place. ... When you type in Hustler.com, are you going to see a page saying 'enter your credit card'? [If so,] that's going to have an impact because people have no idea what they're buying. ... The U.K. is just one portion of our business, but I'm sure it will have some impact." Adult holders of existing accounts will be asked directly by the ISPs if they'd like the filters added to their accounts over the next 18 months, the government said. That, essentially, will require customers to not only verify their age, but also confirm that they'd like the ability to watch porn online. And having to make that declaration could be costly for the industry. "Obviously people are not going to want to do that," said Robert Rosen, a porn publishing veteran and author of "Beaver Street: A History of Modern Pornography". "People just don't want to come out in public and say 'I want to look at porn'. A lot of people who do look at porn are inhibited, shy people." The U.K. is hardly the first country to ban online porn. Last year, an Egyptian court ordered that all X-rated websites be blocked. China and Saudi Arabia also have mandated filters on their Internet connections. Officials in Iceland, a largely liberal country, proposed a ban earlier this year—though the movement seems to have lost steam after the country's ruling party lost control in recent elections. And in India, ISPs were ordered to block 39 websites serving up porn earlier this month—following a petition from the country's Supreme Court to establish a ban on online porn. (Government officials stopped short of a complete ban, saying they didn't believe such a thing was possible.) That may, in fact, be an accurate assessment. Porn, like nature, tends to find a way. While Cameron warns that access to online porn is "corroding childhood," Rosen notes that children have always found a way to circumvent rules meant for their protection. "If kids want to look at pornography, they usually figure out how to do it," he said. Ogas agrees. For "A Billion Wicked Thoughts," he and co-author and fellow neuroscientist Sai Gaddam did an extensive study of online pornography to determine how the area of the brain that generates sexual desire and arousal worked—and were amazed at how widespread it was. Farina, best known as detective Joe Fontana on the long-running TV series "Law & Order," suffered a blood clot in his lung, publicist Lori De Waal said. Farina was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, a detective who moonlighted on Chicago theater stages and in small movie roles. In the 1980s he was on the NBC television series "Crime Story." He became a full-time actor much in demand for feature films ("Midnight Run," "Saving Private Ryan," "Get Shorty," "Snatch"), TV movies ("The Case of the Hillside Strangler," "Empire Falls") and TV series ("The In-Laws," "Buddy Faro"). He then became one of the stars of "Law & Order," playing tough, nattily dressed Detective Joe Fontana. Farina was born on Feb. 29, 1944, the fourth son and youngest of the seven children of Joseph and Yolanda Farina. The father was a doctor, the mother a homemaker, and they raised their kids in a home at 549 W. North Ave. in an area that was then a working-class neighborhood with a broad ethnic mix predominated by Italians and Germans. He went to school right around the corner from his home, at St. Michael's Elementary and St. Michael's Central High School. After graduating from high school, Farina decided to "get the Army out of the way" and served three years before returning to Chicago. He worked for a while at the South Water produce market until, on the advice of his older brother, a lawyer, he joined the police force and studied criminal justice at Truman Junior College. The actor is survived by his three sons, six grandchildren and the love of his life of 35 years, Marianne Cahill. Funeral services are pending. Oops. I just read that "quim" is an old English word for "cunt". And that Loki was using to to refer to Naatasha, the Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson. Supposedly, the word was allowed in a PG 13 movie because the term is archaic, and obviously an American audience wouldn't know what it means. But it seems the people at Mervel are pretty proud of their inside joke, because Loki (actor Tom Hiddleston) used the expression, "Silence, you mewling quims", to greet the audience at the San Diego Comic Con. But if asked to explain what a quim is, the people at Marvel might say it's just an odd term of disrepect, or even deny that it has any sexual meaning at all. | |

Marvel Comics aficionados might know that the title and the baddie Ultron are the subject of 10-issue limited series comic book crossover storyline published by Marvel Comics that involves the return of Ultron and his conquest of the earth. Ultron and his Sentinels should prove a worthy antagonist for the Avengers and it looked like all will be back though there was no mention of Vin Diesel, who is rumored to be in line to play The Vision. The comic series was published between March and June 2013 and features a storyline by Brian Michael Bendis. Artist Bryan Hitch provided the art for issues one through five, and Brandon Peterson for issues six through eight. Other artists who contributed to the series include Carlos Pacheco and Joe Quesada, the latter of whom drew part of the final issue. After DC’s announcement earlier today that the sequel to Man of Steel would be a Superman/Batman team up, the pressure was on for Marvel to top that bombshell during their own Hall H Comic Con panel. Marvel delivered with the announcement of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it wasn’t just Avengers news that electrified the assembled throngs of fanboys and fangirls. Marvel put on a highly theatrical presentation that featured never before seen footage of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as some of the most elaborate fan service seen at this year’s Comic Con courtesy of Loki actor Tom Hiddleston. I realize this is just a comic, or maybe a fantasy, but if Batman fights Superman, how can anyone expect Batman to win? Batman certainly expects to win the fight, but I suspect that Batman is more than a little crazy. Or maybe he's just pumped full of the bullshit that professional wrestlers are when they proclaim they are the greatest, and will defeat any opponents. Batman, a mortal human, against Superman, an alien creature with superpowers. Unless Batman is loaded with Kryptonite weapons, then how does Batman stand a chance of winning? Maybe if Superman ties both hands behind his back, and promises to only use 1 finger in the fight, and not to use his super-strength or any of his other superpowers, then Batman might stand a chance. ------------ ------------ Batman Set to Join Superman for ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel in 2015 By Matt McDaniel | Movie Talk – 5 hours ago Henry Cavill's Superman will team up with Batman in 2015. Superman took flight again this summer in "Man of Steel," which has so far taken in over $280 million in the US and over $620 million worldwide, making it the #2 movie at the box office for 2013 ("Iron Man 3" sits securely at the top spot). Naturally, Henry Cavill is set to step into the character's red boots again, but at the Comic-Con today, there was surprising news that he'll be joined by another caped superhero. Batman will team up with Superman in the next movie, The Hollywood Reporter and the Los Angeles Times confirmed Saturday morning. "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer (who also worked on "The Dark Knight" series) will return for the film expected to be released in 2015. Christian Bale, however, is not expected to return as the Caped Crusader. There was speculation that Warner Bros. would follow "Man of Steel" with a "Justice League" movie that would bring together all of the major heroes from the DC Comics world, including Wonder Woman, but that has been pushed back. Instead, they will follow the Superman/Batman team up with a movie for the super-speedy hero The Flash in 2016, and follow with "Justice League" in 2017. SUPERMAN'S SUITOne has red shorts. The other does not. Because, apparently, in 2013, we just can't take the red shorts seriously any more … at least according to Zack Snyder. This will be the first time the two biggest names in DC Comics will share the big screen, but it almost happened once before over a decade ago. After the embarrassing "Batman & Robin" in 1997, several reboots of the Caped Crusader were proposed, including "Batman vs. Superman." Director Wolfgang Petersen ("Air Force One") was attached to a script by "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker that would have pitted the two against each other, but that project was eventually scrapped for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins." Batman and Superman, who partnered up in the comics under the title "World's Finest," will have another superhero team to watch out for when they hit the screen. Marvel's "The Avengers 2" has already been announced to open that same year on May 1, 2015. UPDATE: Director Zack Snyder officially announced that Batman will indeed appear in his follow-up to "Man of Steel." He revealed a logo for the movie that combines Superman's "S" shield (yes, we know it's not an "S") with the Bat-symbol, which notably looked different than the one in Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Before they found the python, investigators' working theory was that a human burglar with an appetite for destruction — and a serious illness — had gone on a rampage inside the St. Vincent de Paul store in the small town of Ingham. "We thought a person had fallen through the ceiling because the roof panel was cut in half," Auld said. "When they've hit the floor, they've vomited and then staggered and fallen over. That's what we thought anyway." Police now suspect the python entered the store through the roof, which was damaged in a cyclone two years ago. Supposedly, Depp will be paid $116 million for the role. That should keep him from having to eat at McDonald's for the next 2 years, unless they name a Johnnny Depp burger in his honor. | |

July 9, 2013, 4:56 p.m. EDT ‘Lone Ranger’ may cost Disney $100 mln write-down By Maria LaMagna, MarketWatch NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — After a disappointing opening weekend, Walt Disney Co.’s “The Lone Ranger” has evolved from an action-packed story of a masked hero to a cautionary tale about films with big budgets and undefined target audiences. “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously teamed up for a run of “Pirates of the Caribbean” success, brought in just $48.9 million in its first five days in theaters. Analysts called that a bleak number, given the film’s production costs, which are estimated to have been between $215 million and $250 million. Wunderlich Securities had predicted the film would bring in $60 million in its first five days. Now Disney DIS +0.36% is expected to take a write-down of $100 million or more on the movie in the fourth fiscal quarter, according to analysts. The company is slated to report its third-quarter results on Aug. 6. Investors have shrugged off the disappointing opening weekend of “The Lone Ranger.” Disney’s shares, in fact, have gained more than 1% this week to trade above $64. They are up 30% in 2013. Disney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Some have blamed the weekend letdown on timing. Although the July 4 weekend is typically lucrative, “The Lone Ranger” debuted along with the Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig–voiced hit “Despicable Me 2,” which brought in a record $142.1 million in domestic gross proceeds during the five-day weekend period. Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” did so well that it seemed to tap into all demographics, according to Paul Dergarabedian, the president of the box-office division at Hollywood.com, and surely overlapped with “The Lone Ranger” audience despite their genre differences. “Everybody loves the minions, not just little kids,” he said. “They’re intriguing characters.” Those who saw “The Lone Ranger” were decidedly older: 68% were over 25, while 24% were over 50 and only 16% of the audience was younger than 18. This more mature audience, perhaps familiar with the classic “Lone Ranger” character from the 1930s radio show or the 1950s television show, had to adjust to Bruckheimer’s style, Dergarabedian said, and it just didn’t seem to work. “It’s one thing to have fun with big action movies, but, when you have something like a western, it’s tough to tinker with the formula,” Dergarabedian said. It appears, in light of “The Lone Ranger,” that “the diehard fans don’t like that, and the younger audience isn’t that into westerns anyway,” he said. Bruckheimer has produced several recent films for Disney that performed poorly, including “G-Force,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” But fingers of blame were also directed at Depp. Outside of hits such as the “Pirates” franchise and “Alice in Wonderland,” Depp has starred in a number of box-office disappointments, including “The Rum Diary” and “Dark Shadows.” “The Lone Ranger” got an average 4.7/10 rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a B-plus CinemaScore. Critics said it was too long (at 2 hours and 29 minutes) and the script was bland. The criticism is reminiscent of another recent Disney flop, “John Carter,” which resulted in a $200 million loss for the company. Yet even after “John Carter,” shortly after which then–Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross resigned, Disney’s stock barely moved. The movie’s write-down was 6 cents a share, and Disney shares traded at around $41 at the time. Analysts have predicted a similar result from “The Lone Ranger.” David Miller, an analyst at B. Riley who covers Disney, said in a note that he thinks post–“Lone Ranger,” Disney will see a write-down of 4 or 5 cents. Firm numbers will not be known for 10 to 14 days, he said, because Disney does not reveal negative costs on its films. Miller cautioned it could be premature to predict any write-down at all; Disney may wait to see how the film does overseas first. Lazard Capital Markets said Disney could face a $190 million writeoff, while Wunderlich Securities estimated $150 million. Disney will weather the hit, Dergarabedian said. For every “John Carter” or “Lone Ranger,” there’s a “Monsters University” or “The Avengers.” “This isn’t going to break Disney,” he said. “They’re a large enough company, and the film division is just a part. I am now watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Now I will never be able to trust the US government ever again. They have lied to us, again and again. They keep secrets from us, while spying on friends, allies, US citizens, and everyone else they can spy on. The US was not the first to land on the moon. There were aliens before us. And the US government found proof, and keep it hidden. Never believe what the government tells. They are professional liars. My thanks to Michael Bay for exposing this evil truth. I just saw The Hunger Games. I thought it would be like the Twilight moives, with sparkly vampires and shirtless werewolves. But I was wrong. This is a much more entertaining film. There are also some fine actors in the film: Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland. Jennifer Lawrence gives an outstanding performance. Highly recommend this movie, it's not just for teenage girls. | |

I'm not saying that crazies were only invented recently. What I'm saying is that they seem to more common in today's world versus a50 or 60 years ago. Part of the change might be that information is more widespread and accessible. But it's more than just that. Celebrities or priests molesting children have probably happened throughout history. But now, instead of being hidden or swept under the rug, it's reported in the news and the internet. So we are more aware of these things happening. But the mass murders, as an example, seem to be more common today. Somebody getting a gun and shooting people at random. That happens every few years. 50 or 60 years ago, that was rare. Not something that happened every few years. But a lot depends on where you are focused. In Africa, they have been mass killings for many years. Those stories don't get the attention that shooting in America or Europe get. Is the world a darker place than it was 50+ years ago? You had Hitler. You had Stalin. Both of them killed (or were responsible for) millions of civilians dying, because of some plan they had to create a better world. | |

Yes, it's the same woman. And now she's convicted and sentenced to prison for life. I don't do a google search for these articles. I read the entertainment news, and when I see a strange-looking article heading, I sometimes click on it. And that's why I sometimes post these "news" articles here. I mean, I know there are crazy people out there, and it shouldn't shock me no matter what they do, but I keep on being surprised. I sometimes wonder if their craziness might rub off on "normal" people. Or maybe "normal" people, if you go down deep enough, aren't really that normal after all. What ever happened to the world being safe, and you could trust people? When I was a kid, we didn't have these types of horror stories about mass killings or random killings so often. But in today's world, parents teach their children to be suspicious of strangers, to report any behavior that might be suspicious or odd, to be on guard. The article does not say if she turned on the garbage disposal, and flushed the remains down the drain. Or was the ex-husband able to get the severed penis back? You can rent or buy movies from Amazon. Obviously, the price for buying a movie is higher than for renting it. If you do buy the movie, you can have it stored on the cloud at Amazon, or you can have it downloaded to your computer or some other device. Normally, it is cheaper to buy a DVD copy of a movie, instead of buying a copy to download. It doesn't make sense, to me, but that's usually the way they are priced. And the DVD usually has better features: Closed-captioned, choice of languages, choice of audio track, sometimes a feature on how the movie was made, etc. The download copy doesn't have any of those extra features that the DVD might have. | |

I was trying to be ironic, or facetious, when I wrote that Will Smith is worth every penny of $50 million. You spend that kind of money on a single actor, and it's a real gamble that the movie will make money. I don't have anything against Will Smith, he's just like a lot of other Hollywood superstars who are making many millions of dollars per picture, and they want as much as they can get, which is part of human nature. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are billionaires, but they are still interested in making even more money. I liked Will Smith in Ali (the Muhammad Ali movie). But he doesn't do a lot of serious characters. At one time Jeff Goldblum was hot: The Big Chill, Silverado, The Fly, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Jurassic Park 2. But his popularity or stardom seems to have vanished. I don't know why, it is something that just happens with actors. | |

I doubt that the Sopranos will be resumed. James Gandolfini played the lead character. Without him, the show, even though full of other interesting characters, would be very different. I doubt the creator of the show was thinking of resuming the show before Gandolfini's death. And now that Gandolfini is dead, it would be a real stretch if they tried to make new episodes. | |

If Will Smith won't be in the Independence Day sequels, who's going to bother going to see those movies in a theater? Director Roland Emmerich has made a big mistake, thinking that Will Smith, at $50 million per movie, is too expensive. Will Smith is a proven box-office Megastar. I'm not a psychologist or have a firm grasp of the porn market, but I think what messmer wrote makes sense. Old-time softcore tease and lingerie are specialty markets, and most sites are not going to serve a narket/audience that is so limited in numbers. Which is why the sites that might have served that niche have tried to broaden their appeal by adding hardcore. One field that is gaining popularity is the glamcore/heartcore area, which is a romanticized version of hardcore. And most glamcore doesn't put much emphasis on tease or lingerie. Or on story either, to be truthful. They give an impression of some story, but the plot is implied, not shown. | |

I've never dreamed of owning a Porsche. Thought they were too expensive. But this article shows I might be able to afford a BMW. Or even a Mercedes. But further research is needed, because I am probably over the weight limit (and the height limit) for these cars. Kick-Ass 2 is coming August 16. The first one was good, with Nicolas Cage and Chloë Grace Moretz as his daughter, Hit Girl. Unfortunately, Nicolas Cage dies in the movie, but Chloe Grace Moretz carries on the good fight against crime. Now, Kick-Ass 2 is coming, with Chloe Grace Moretz back as Hit Girl, Aaron Taylor-Johnson back as Kick Ass, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the villain "The Mother Fucker", and Jim Carrey lending his support to Kick Ass and Hit Girl. I don't especially care for Jim Carrey, but I am looking forward to this movie, think it could be good. Different from the super-hero blockbusters. | |

Actor James Gandolfini dead at age 51 By Chelsea J. Carter and JD Cargill, CNN updated 9:41 AM EDT, Thu June 20, 2013 HBO: Actor James Gandolfini has died (CNN) -- James Gandolfini, best known for his role as an anxiety-ridden mob boss on HBO's "The Sopranos," died Wednesday while on vacation in Italy. He was 51. The exact cause of death is not known, but his managers said it was possibly a heart attack. His body is in a hospital morgue in Rome. Once the U.S. Embassy issues a death certificate, Gandolfini's remains can be returned to the United States. "It is with immense sorrow that we report our client, James Gandolfini, passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy," managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. "Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving." The actor had been scheduled to make an appearance at the Taormina Film Fest in Sicily this week. Gandolfini won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, the angst-wracked mob boss who visited a therapist and took Prozac while knocking off people. "The Sopranos" aired from 1999 to 2007. Edie Falco, the actress who played Tony's wife Carmela, said she was "shocked and devastated" by the news. "He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague. My heart goes out to his family," Falco said in a statement Thursday. "The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I've ever known." "Jimmy was the spiritual core of our Sopranos family, and I am stunned at this devastating loss," said Chris Albrecht, the former president of HBO who gave the green light to the show. "He was a great talent, but an even better man. My thoughts are with his family." HBO is owned by TimeWarner, which is also CNN's parent company. I still stop by every day, to see what's going on. I know that people are putting up less reviews lately, but I also think that many people are joining sites they were members of in the past, so there's less reason for them to write a new review. I know that mainly, instead of joining a completely new site, I'd rather spend my money joining a site that I found to be acceptable in the past. There are plenty of sites out there that I wouldn't mind exploring. But my time is limited. And my money is even more limited. I wouldn't mind finding some porn site that I found to be absolutely fantastic. But I've already found a number of sites that I think give pretty good value. | |

I have no problem with parts of Metropolis being destroyed. In fact, if half the population of Metropolis was destroyed, the United States would probably be a safer, friendlier nation. I am really tired of the West Coast, or Los Angeles, being destroyed in so many movies. And the people of Metropolis, or New York, are some of the rudest, most self-centered, conniving citizens in the United States. New York, remember, is where Wall Street operates. And you don't get criminals any bigger than what you find on Wall Street. The people who rob banks are pikers compared to what some of the Wall Street players can make in a single year. | |

But most commercials from major brands (except for Victoria's Secret) don't show a lot of skin. Or do they reserve commercials like this one to cable channels? | |

For $50, you can be the first person in your neighborhood to see World War Z, the Brad Pitt zombie movie opening this month. You not only get to see the movie, in RealD 3D, you also get to keep a special pair of 3D glasses, plus a "World War Z" poster and a HD digital download of the film the day it becomes available on home video. All this, and a small bag of popcorn to use while you are watching the movie. What a great deal! PS: Steven Spielberg said in a talk with George Lucas at USC that his movie Lincoln is only worth $7. Maybe that why I haven't seen it yet. My movie theater charges more than $7, even with a senior discount and matinee prices. I am waiting to watch Lincoln when it's free on cable. Paramount Pictures and Regal Cinemas are betting that zombie and/or Brad Pitt fans are willing to dig deep for the chance to see the big budget zombie epic a few days ahead of schedule, to the tune of $50. A limited number of "mega tickets" have been devised for mega fans. Early screenings of "World War Z" will be held in five cities on June 19, two days before the movie opens wide. Ordinary early tickets for the pre-release screenings will be available for $16.50 ($14.00 for children), already a bit steep for a mid-week showing, but Paramount is also offering their super-sized version for the princely sum of $48.75, which tops off at an even $50 when the $1.25 service fee is included. So what does that $50 get you? Well, the screening is in RealD 3D, and you'll receive a pair of special collectable custom 3D glasses (which you presumably won't be asked to recycle after the show). You'll also get a full-size copy of a limited edition "World War Z" poster and a HD digital download of the film the day it becomes available on home video. And because they're staying classy, the promoters are even throwing in a bag of popcorn. Small size, of course — but what do you want for fifty bucks? By the way, it looks like these guys got to see it for free! The luxury-priced screenings of Brad Pitt's zombie invasion movie are happening in Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and, yes, also in San Diego (pronounced San Dee-yah-go to "Anchorman" fans). The mega ticket screenings are the first of their kind, according to Paramount, suggesting that if enough people are willing to part with half a Benjamin for the privilege of seeing "World War Z" a few days early — and get some goodies thrown in — this could become a regular part of the launch cycle for event movies. In an amusing coincidence, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas spoke at an event at the University of Southern California on Wednesday, where the veteran filmmakers offered dire predictions about the future of the movie industry as budget for potential blockbusters continue to grow. "There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega-budget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm," Spielberg said. As a consequence, Spielberg said he expects a future where theaters and studios will maximize profits by charging more for major attractions. "You're gonna have to pay $25 for the next 'Iron Man,' you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see 'Lincoln,'" Spielberg said. Congratulations, Mr. Spielberg! I saw Fast & Furious 6 yesterday. It was good, lots of fast driving and explosions and whatnot. But I liked Fast and Furious 5 better. The plot (not a great plot, this series is not aimed at deep-thinkers) made more sense in #5. I realize these are escapist movies, but the motivations of the characters are just fricking unbelievable. And these characters (Vin Diesel and his gang) are, in spite of being criminals, the most loyal, wonderful, kind, and generous people you could ever hope would be a part of your family. This is a family movie, where the virtues of family mean even more than in a Disney movie. Disney used to be about family type entertainment, but Fast and Furious 6 is the new version of family values with sex (implied, not shown), love, loyalty and cool thrown in. | |

I saw Warm Bodies in a movie theater. Was not disappointed. The movie had humor, intelligence, a fresh take on zombies (which are not my niche either), and Theresa Palmer, a girl most PU members could drool over (even if there weren't any nude scenes). Rent it at Redbox for just over $1. I'm not saying it's the greatest movie ever made, but I really enjoyed it. I agree that the old placement of the poll made it much more noticeable. Now, unless you're specifically searching for the poll, you won't notice it's there, because it's lumped in with too many other things that come before it. As far as my suggestion of spot advertising: if you prefer looking at an enlarged avatar of Wittyguy, so be it. Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I enjoy gazing at some of the fine models found at Metart.   | |

I am looking forward to the day when to read a PU review, you first have to view an advertisement for 15-30 seconds or more, that covers the PU review page. It has taken in an estimated $27 million since opening Friday, well below industry expectations and “Fast and Furious 6,” which repeated as champ with roughly $35 million. The weekend’s other wide opener, the magic-themed heist thriller “Now You See Me," was a pleasant surprise runner-up with $28 million, about $10 million above analysts’ pre-release projections. The M. Night Shyamalan-directed “After Earth,” in which the father and son play space travelers stranded on Earth 1,000 years after humanity has left, had been expected to challenge “Fast and Furious 6” for No. 1 this weekend. But coupled with blistering reviews, weak word of mouth and a hefty $130 million production budget, the limp launch adds up to a letdown for Sony and Smith's Overbrook Entertainment. Will Smith, a rap star who became Hollywood royalty in TV's "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" before moving over to film, has a much smaller part in "After Earth" than his progeny, and "After Earth" was envisioned as a trilogy. It's a good bet plans for sequels are on hold now, however. "After Earth" earned a so-so "B" CinemaScore from audiences, which were 51 percent male and 40 percent under 25 years of age. Sony would have liked to have seen the latter figure higher, but marketing the film primarily as an action adventure rather than one more aimed at kids may have complicated things. Papa Smith has been in just one movie since 2008, last year’s “Men In Black 3.” He remains a box-office force internationally – “MIB 3” brought in $180 million in the U.S. and $445 million abroad -- and “After Earth” could do better when it rolls out abroad over the next few weeks. Jaden's last movie, the 2010 remake of "The Karate Kid," made $360 million worldwide. But that one opened to $55 million in the United States. It was close for fourth, between Paramount and Skydance Production's "Star Trek Into Darkness" and Fox's animated family film "Epic," with both studios estimating weekends in the $16.4 million range. "The Hangover Part III" was just behind at $15.9 million, a 62 percent drop from its opening last week, giving it an $88 million domestic total after two weeks. Universal’s cars-and-criminals sequel dropped 65 percent from its record Memorial Day weekend debut, a steep but standard fall for the films in the franchise, which have fallen off sharply from debut weeks in the past. The domestic total for "Fast 6" is now $170 million and it added an impressive $75 million in its second week of overseas release. That brings its worldwide total to more than $480 million, and it will easily be the franchise's biggest moneymaker. "Now You See Me," which cost about $75 million to produce, is a big win for Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment. The PG-13 "Now You See Me" follows an FBI agent and Interpol detective tracking a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money. Audiences, which were very broad at 51 percent women and 52 percent under 30, gave it an "A-" CinemaScore. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the ensemble cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Morgan Freeman and Dave Franco. Disney's blockbuster Marvel sequel "Iron Man 3" was seventh with $8 million, followed by "The Great Gatsby" at $6.2 million, "Mud" ($1.2 million) and "The Croods" ($615,000). The overall box office was ahead of the comparable weekend last year for the second consecutive week. I found PU by accident, and found the reviews were more honest, more accurate than the puff pieces on other porn review sites. I lurked for a while, then finally joined. A couple of weeks after I wrote my first site review, I got a negative trust vote by Anonymous. I thought the negative trust vote was unfair, and the comment was unfair: "Reviews are too much like other members and english prof. would most likely think that you copied some material just makes your reviews a little questionable for me." I thought it was a blemish on my reputation. What reputation? Being a Porn Pervert?  So I got zinged once, but thankfully, I was able to drag myself up from the floor and continue writing reviews. Most of the members here are friendly and courteous, and give helpful advice/reviews on what sites to join. So that's why I've stayed a member. | |

Good memory. I've seen Crossing Over. And I remember those scenes. The scenes weren't done for titillation. She was getting bonked by Ray Liotta, in exchange for a green card. Alice Eve is a lovely young woman. If she is semi-nude, I would not call that gratuitous, but an essential moment in any movie I would watch. I am not planning on seeing Star Trek in the movies. But I am now looking forward to seeing it on DVD. And will freeze-frame the section on her changing clothes in the shuttle, to see if there are any vicious alien creatures trying to grope Alice Eve's lovely body. Superman flies into theaters on June 14. I've read that the new Superman is a tortured soul, who realizes he is different from normal human beings. Does that mean he will get a lobotomy, as Zach Snyder did to his heroine in Sucker Punch? How else would Superman gain release from his doubts, his insecurities?
