Occasionally I want to bash it with a sledgehammer...but normally I put it to sleep and turn off the monitor (annoying power light turns orange during sleep mode), which I do even when I plan not to use for just a few hours.

I used to leave it on until I really checked my electricity bills. I think having it always in sleep mode never lets it update.

While I answered "Leave it on 24/7", it does put itself into a sleep mode after some time - That is until some program decides it's time for a midnight update at which point it wakes up and wakes me up rebooting - but technically, since it is doing the sleeping on it's own, I could not, in good conscious, choose "Put it into sleep mode".

I haven't used a sledgehammer on my computer, but I did slap my laptop a few times until it quite working on me. True story. I don't know if the slaps were what broke the fucker.

My PCs usually stay on 24/7, but the sleep mode comes on automatically. My anti-virus programs (which seem to think they own my computers) can update themselves that way. Hopefully they are not part of Skynet.

Power it off........no risk during the night - and why leave it on - no need.

I usually switch it off (power off) because that clears almost everything and secures my computer (requires a password to start up. However occasionally I'll leave it on, but only when I have a large set of D/L's working.

I never turn mine off - but I do let it go to sleep automatically. That said, I have restarted it more often lately as I've switched OS and have been tinkering... but once settled, it will likely stay on for weeks, if not months, between reboots.

REPLY TO #6 - Denner :
My understanding, limited as it may be, is that there is less wear and tear on system parts leaving it on all the time vs powering it up and down.

I rarely turn it off but it goes into sleep mode sometime after I stop using it. The computer runs a clean up program in the middle of the night and scans for viruses as well.
I will normally turm it off at least once a week just to give it a break.

Usually send it to sleep, since it is also my DVR it will wake if it is going to record something (which it wont do if I shut it down unfortunately).

My computer sleeps while I'm away, and sometimes I set it to "coma" with the power off.

The desktop I power off at bed time, during the day if I'm away I just put it to sleep. The laptop I never power off, just close the lid to sleep mode.

I leave it on 24/7, but the energy management shuts off unused stuff automatically.
