Raffle Update! Hi everyone! After receiving many comments over the last few months, we have decided to relaunch the weekly raffle! We hope you're as excited as we are! The approach will be simpler. Instead of receiving tickets for different actions (reviews, comments, replies, etc), all those who have received points for user reviews submitted within that week will be entered for a chance to win! The prizes will be Amazon gift cards right now, but it could expand to include different items in the future. I'd love to get some feedback on the old raffle system. What did you like or dislike? What changes would you like to see? Cheers!

Yay, free money! That's probably the general feeling around here. As for changes ... mmmmm. The last system worked pretty well overall. The only downside with the old system is that it probably lead some to game the system by giving "trust" votes to inactive members and pointless "feedback" to rack up enough points to enter a raffle (Confession: I did this a few times). However, if the goal is to increase overall participation then I probably wouldn't deviate from the old format. It just gets too time consuming and subjective to only give raffle tickets for "quality" participation. If it were me, I'd probably just use the same format / rules as before and maybe tweak it later if need be.

I liked the original system but any system you want to implement is fine with me. The Amazon Gift Card is ideal as that was what I got in the past. I owe a lot of thanks to TBP/PU for the many hours of joy from all the great movies I bought on Amazon with my raffle winnings. Long live the Brown Coats.

Just reviews for raffle entries sounds OK. It might liven the place up. The "game-the-system" problems we had before were not due to the way the raffle was set up but were due to human nature. Once the new system gets underway, you can be sure there will be sketchy, minimal-effort reviews written by some people in an effort to win without trying too hard, just as we had before. We'll just have to come up with some oblique form of mock civility when it's time to say something like, "Wow, that's just what the visitors' pages say! This is so consistent!" or "Welcome to PU! I think your reviews are off to a great start!" (Translation: "What lame-ass piece of raffle bait!") I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

We definitely need more reviews, but we also need more comments and replies to liven things up. A poorly written review can be rewarded with no points towards the raffle. Effort should be rewarded, not a review written with no thought and obviously done to get a chance in the raffle. I feel that the point system is ok to use, but not for trust votes. That seldom meant much in the past and was easy to game. I would like to see likes/dislikes as interesting input instead, but not towards the raffle. I think the raffle should have points awarded for poll questions as those are part of the intangible factors that make for an interesting site. Edited on Oct 21, 2015, 04:15pm

Well, as I have great difficulty in finding any decent sites in my preferred niche at all, basing it solely on reviews is not going to attract any participation from me. Yeah the old system was great tbh, seemed to work really well. But just reviews might make it more simple. I agree though someone posting 5 mini reviews shouldn't beat or stand better chance of winning than someone posting a really good thought out one. But might be difficult to implement a system of quality of reviews without loads of extra work. I dunno how they did it last time. Under the old system reviews were judged and placed in a category. The least detailed reviews got awarded no raffle tickets. The next most detailed got one raffle ticket. The most helpful reviews got two tickets. Or did I remember wrong?

For the record ... In the old system the number of tickets awarded was tied to the points earned for a review. Thus, an excellent review earned 3 tickets while less detailed reviews earned less tickets. It is very encouraging to see Rabbits is looking to bring back a raffle of some type. Kudos to them! An interesting aside ... When polled, users repeatedly said their participation here wasn't because of the raffle. Yet, when the raffle went away so did a lions share of user participation. For what it's worth, during the old system I once had a single winning hand on that prevailing raffle. I'm not rich, but I never pursued my winning ($50) Why? because I found it a bit much wading through the hassle getting my hands on it. I settled for the $50 worth of entertainment for simply competing. My vote is cast simply on the fun of being in the fray. Hell, you can drop my winning in a cup grasped by hand, arm out-stretched attached to a homeless figure dominating a corner sidewalk.

I keep glitching when I post on this. It pops up as posted, but Amanda's post is the only one that shows. Her post also gets a case of the WeeWillyWinky's with the PU header in it, but no other posts show up. Edit: Should have mentioned the posts that are glitching are 4,000-5,000 characters. It got me again I think I've figured the problem out. It has something to do with Firefox. I was reading posts on here earlier on Chrome and didn't see the glitch once. When I got home, I was finishing reading what I had started and the glitch showed up twice on Firefox. This is how it's responding when the glitch occurs. I hit add reply. The site starts loading. It pops up with just Amanda's original post and the glitched header showing up under the post. I refreshed, it loaded again with all the posts back to normal, but without mine. I'll try it in Chrome. Ditto the problem with Firefox. Whenever I first click into a forum thread I get a messed up page. Hit "refresh" and everything lays out fine.

Alright, another try, this time in Chrome and a sticky note on my monitor that says, "Copy to browser before hitting add reply button". The raffle originally wasn't a selling point for PU. Quite a few of us who are still around joined PU before PU was even a website. It was a little email form on TBP. I'm going to give my most straightforward feelings towards the raffle and how it helps, maybe hurts membership participation on PU. A little humor to start. I didn't know the raffle was starting on PU. It started fairly early in PU's life, but we didn't have a forum back then so there was no easy way for Khan and Rick to post announcements. I had posted a review and received an email that said, "You've earned tickets". Honestly ... I thought Khan was spamming me That was back in 2007 when the internet was filled with those "You've won a prize, click here to claim it" ads. The raffle was a nice touch for someone like me. I'm an avid gamer and music collector. Amazon is one of the best places to buy those. During the first year of the raffle, hardly any of us members even knew each other (online or offline), since there wasn't any way to talk to each other (no forum) besides just replying to each other's reviews. It was more or less a free-for-all when it came to the raffle. I took full advantage of it since there would only be 6-10 eligible members a week. With 3 prizes, it was hard not to win. I'll start this part with a post I made awhile back towards a new(er) member who was accusing us longtime members of writing "re-reviews just to get more tickets". This is my reviews per month by year: In 2007, 12 reviews per month In 2008, 6 reviews per month In 2009, 2 reviews per month In 2010-2013, less than 1.5 reviews per month Not too far into the raffle's life, the new(er) members (some not all), would get mad and target the members who had been here longer and who were winning more raffles than them. The various ones I heard were, "You're a shill for these websites who you give high scores. You're just doing it for tickets in the raffle and some kind of kickback from those sites you review" to "The PU staff favors you and a few others in the raffle". And the above one about some of us writing re-reviews just to get tickets. Oh and my favorite one, "You're a shill for these sites or you are a serious porn addict ... who needs help." That's the bad part of the raffle. Not everyone experienced it, but thanks to being a part of that first year of the raffle, my total winnings in the raffle was the highest. My review participation slowed mainly because I like the community here, liked Khan, Rick and the PU staff and felt like maybe I was winning too often. I cut out re-reviews of sites that wouldn't be a big difference from the original review score-wise. The bad part with this is simple. While I dropped off on reviews, I did want to have an equal shot as the other members at winning the raffle. So, like a lot of the others, I just would do one of the other options like comments, 5 replies, 5 trust votes. Which made it look like I (can't speak for others) was just getting by on minimal participation and still winning an occasional raffle. The difference in my activity here caused an 8-10 tickets less per week for me and from the looks of it, back then, I had an average number of tickets compared to other active members. Usually 9-10 per week, where as before, I had consistently had 20+ tickets in weeks. I had previous experience with being a webmaster on a spirituality/psychology forum and knew a happy core group of members would keep PU going and knew if the members weren't happy we would lose the raffle altogether. Which is something I think Rabbit should consider doing if the raffle starts. Make it clear to the members that PU makes money on us members joining websites through the PU links. I was surprised how many members didn't know that. My point being: I do think the stoppage of the raffle hurt participation, but I also think for some of us at least, the feeling that PU was becoming unstable caused some of the lesser participation. It's hard to believe, but some of us have been here nearly 9 years. If I told how much my life has changed since 2007, it would make most people's head hurt. That too, I believe, is a part of the lesser participation. I reviewed roughly 100 sites in my first year. It started becoming a situation where I was either going to join sites I didn't think I would like just to have something to review or I was going to be writing re-reviews, which some members complained about. That's how I think the raffle can help participation and PU. Don't let the need for newer (more) members outweigh the importance of the core members who have held the site together for nearly 9 years. We've had plenty of new(er) members over the years who became just as respected and valued as the original members. The good newer members will stick around, the ones just in it for the raffle will eventually quit anyway because there's not as good of chances of winning it as it was back in 2007. Following in that, I don't think the scoring should change at all. The original scoring system was fair to everyone. New members needed 5 experience points (3 good reviews) to become eligible for the raffle. Longtime members had badges which earned tickets for us and gave new members reason to stick around to earn those badges too. The original scoring also didn't cause any separation between types of members. Meaning those who didn't review sites, but contributed to other parts of PU, like commenting, replying to others, still could win the raffle and vice versa. Last, this applied to me, but at least a few other members have also talked about it. The raffle became a thank you from PU to us loyal members who didn't go join websites through Rabbit's Reviews back then and kept joining instead through PU links. While the raffle didn't bring most of us in as members, I do think it helped keep us core members joining through PU links and participating more. The stability will come with a little time and new members will start sticking around more with the added stability. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

Well, after typing some long ass reply, it magically disappeared, so I guess I am in the same boat as exotics. Regardless, what I think I said originally was I agree with exotics, the main reason I stopped posting here was I thought the site was basically dying, in favor of some myporn site or some crap, didn't interest me, so I sort of stopped. I still stop by from time to time, and enjoy reading about what people are up to, but just haven't been motivated to post anything. The raffle is good, but I don't think it fixes all the problems here, it will certainly motivate members to be active (and certainly some may game the system as exotics has pointed out), but honestly there are better discounts elsewhere, and this is probably the biggest problem. I like this site, and I like this community, but I am not going to spend $10 extra on it (not trying to be a dick, probably sound like a dick, forgive me, I am drunk). Glad some folks are still here, nice to see them around. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars. Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Wonderful woman. We're all, we're all very fond of her. Yeah, I notice the problem with the forum not displaying properly on Firefox too. I also noticed several threads not bump to the top when I replied to them even though my posts were there. That second issue inevitably led to me posting less, because its much less likely that the posts will get seen. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

Thank you for this response, exotics4me. I knew about TBP/PU before I started working with it, but wasn't really a contributor to the forum. I really value this feedback from long-time PU members.

I agree with Exotic - the good side of the raffles is "more participation on the site". The down-side of the raffles is that there "might" be more low-quality participation and you will probably see a lot of "so-and-so's gaming the system to be winning so much" posts. Unless the latter gets toxic, I think it's a minor annoyance, since this site could definitely do with more participation. Plus I won a significant amount from the raffles, which was a happifying thing. Personally, any time I got a little jealous of other people winning, my reaction was to get off my butt and do some reviews and I tried to make them as high-quality as possible. I vote to bring back the raffle.

There still seems to be a problem with Firefox showing a complete thread. When I hit the link for the last poat in a thread, I often get the first post in the thread. When I hit the refresh button, the other posts are usually revealed. So I assume there is still something buggy in the software running the site.

Hi everyone, I wanted to jump in and post some updates and feedback. First off, Exotics- thanks for posting your honest opinion. While we cannot fight the industry trend (less quality sites), there's certainly still enough great sites out there to drive enough new reviews & comments to make this site livelier, more useful and interesting. I doubt anyone would write 12 reviews per month, but if we can get 3-4 new reviews per day from the community as a whole, I believe it would be a win. I don't see the raffle as a way to drive new members to the site. Rick & his team were very much aware of the fact that participation died off when the raffle was taken down. My primary hope with it is to get back some of the older users and get them sharing again. My secondary goal is to show our appreciation to you the loyal users. The amount of people still willing to spend on porn is shrinking with time and there were strong wishes expressed by many of you about the raffle. And so we listened. We have the pages designed and ready to go live Wednesday Dec 9th. The raffle will be somewhat different and more simple, but the idea is the same. Sure, there will be issues with it, just like some valid ones you brought up about the previous raffle. We're aware and ready to face that. Please keep in mind, we will run it as an experiment for a month or 2 and see if it accomplishes the goal of increasing participation. So please bear with us and of course as it launches we'll depend on your continuous feedback in adjusting and making it successful. Enjoy your weekend! m

Rabbit, If you are skeptical that a raffle will bring new participants, do you have other ideas on that topic? I see a small uptick recently as to new and almost new members getting involved with a posting or two. Can this be a sign of better days?

I'm not saying it won't, I'm just saying that's not the primary goal. PU has thousands of registered users which are no longer coming to the site. They already know about it and what it does and what the raffle is, as opposed to new members who might not. A site like PU/TBP nowadays can depend on only a few sources of new users: search engines, paysite referrals, word of mouth and social media, all ranked by order of possible volume. They all have their own challenges and limits. we're definitely tweaking things for search engines and we have access to paysite members (through our ad platform), but unfortunately the site's are far from being properly setup to handle optimization of traffic buying and user experience. It's something we'll be working on in 2016, but I won't kid you- judging by the state of the code behind them, it is going to be a long and arduous road.
