Picture Viewing Question

Hello everyone, I wonder if some one can give me some advice on this picture viewing question. Sorry the explanation is a bit long. Trimmed it as much as I could.

My preferred picture viewer is the slide show you get if you pick "my documents" off the windows start menu. This brings up a blue bar on the left side of the screen. If I then pick my pictures it brings up an option of slide show in the blue bar. I like this viewer because when I pick a picture directory it brings up thumbnails almost immediately so I can see what's on offer and it is very easy to navigate. The problem is that when I pick the slide show it only displays the pictures in one fixed size. So, if the pictures are big they fill the screen :). If they are small (say 800 x 533 like Reality Kings) all I get is a box in the middle of the screen with a big black border. This is a waste on a 24" wide screen monitor. I cannot find any way whatsoever to boost the size to fill the screen.

So I tried Media Centre. In media centre the pictures are all brought up to full screen size. So far so good. The problem with media centre is that I use two monitors (videos on one, pictures on the other etc.) but when media centre is maximized to one screen it won't let the mouse curser move on to the second screen. This is a pain because I can't navigate around my pictures or other videos on the second monitor ! Media centre is also very clumsy to use because, if there's lots of pictures, it takes forever to scroll down them to see what's on offer.

In Windows Media and Fax viewer the pictures can be zoomed but it is not possible to cycle through the photos in slideshow mode so that software is not any good on any front.

Can anyone help me solve the problems with these viewers I mentioned or suggest a different viewer that would give me everything I want ? Full screen pictures and let me use the second screen too.

Also can I say that its good to read the contributions on the site generally and credit to all contributors for what looks most of the time looks like sane and sensible posts not abusive intemperate rubbish that litters lots of sites.

Thanks for reading :).

Hello wittyguy, thank you for your reply. I have just run media centre again and my experience with the smaller RK pictures is not too bad from a strictly viewing point of view. They fill up most of the screen and although they are not pin sharp I have to say they aren't bad at all. Plus I like the girls they got lol.

Also those RK sets are way way too big with 700 or 1000 photos. It's absurd and media centre can't navigate round them well at all and its impossble to enjoy looking through them. I don't see why they can't edit it down to a sensible number. I'd do it myself but I just don't have the time. Anyway, that's a different gripe lol.

That's a good problem to bring up. I don't know what OS you other guys are using, but I'm still in XP and I make folders of pics "picture" folders which I can then view as "filmstrip," which is really a slide show on the top with thumbs on the bottom. Navigating is easy: Just click the first thumb and use the arrow keys from there. (Resizing goes only as far as you can increase the height of the folder window.)

But as for getting them full screen, the issue at hand, I haven't a clue. Betcha can do it on a Mac. And maybe Microsoft will eventually get around to that also ... I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Hey Thomas,

Not a cheap fix to your problem, but Windows 7 sizes the maximum dimension on your picture to your screen in the slideshow, so if its an older or poor quality picture it optimize the size to your screen - obviously you will usually end up with black bars on the sides or bottom unless the picture format exactly matches the dimension ratio of your screen.

As far as how to fix your issue with the second screen, I don't really know how that would work. I tried opening a few smaller pictures I have in Adobe Image Viewer and Apple's Quicktime picture viewer and neither of those appear to be a workable solution to your problem. Oh, I forgot to mention, the Windows 7 "stretching" the picture to fit your screen can be bad if it is a very low quality picture or a decent quality picture on a huge monitor, the picture can get pixilated. Which some might find more annoying than viewing a smaller crisper picture... Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Have you looked for any aftermarket picture viewers? Look around downloads.com for a bit and you might come up with something. The downloads there are free, but some of the software is only a trial version. You might find something that will do exactly what you want done. I use Irfan View. This Program (Freeware) has all I need to watch pictures.
You can do a Random Slideshow with Timer or by Click, you can list Thumbnails and even convert pictures.

I never use another tool to watch the pictures for the "special moments".

You might also have a look at the program at www.xnview.com
It's a highly configurable picture viewer that, among other things, will make slideshows that you can save. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

I'm gonna piggyback a question on this thread that's not entirely unrelated to photos (ahem).

In XP, sometimes I'll mouse over a folder of pics and it tells me "larger than 356 MB" or something like that. I have to hit F5 and try again before getting the actual folder size (well, a close-enough rounding of it).

But why in the hell would they bloat the code by having the OS tell a user NOT the actual folder size, but that it's greater than some randomly picked size that it's not???

Now the question: Does Vista and/or Windows 7 do this silly shit? I'll have to "upgrade" (yeah, sure) one of these days. Do have this to look forward to?

Thanks. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I don't really know, but this is my guess..

I suppose it is what your processors are bimbling away with at the time you mouse over. If those little fellas are too busy before the time out, they won't have assessed the full size of it, so they will just display what they have counted up to filesize wise?

Drooler,

My exerience with Windows 7 so far is that it gives you the actual folder size when you mouse-over it, however I usually have my view set to "Details", so Windows has already loaded the folder size since it is one of the details shown.

I find Windows 7 much more useful for the porn viewing experience than XP was, but it is a good bit more of a RAM hog than XP - although not as bad as vista...

Thanks, Slutty. (I hope you don't mind if I call you that. ;) I'll probably leapfrog the infamous Vista and head straight to "lucky" 7. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I'm sticking with XP Pro64 for the forseeable.

Seems pretty robust.
