External drives - back-up ect.? Most here got external drives for the vast amount of content - and especially videos takes up a lot of space. The more ex-drives I get (three, right now), the more worried I get losing the top-fav-material - so I copy some of the 'best' - so it'splaced on two ex-drives... Bottom line: Any wizard here with knowledge of these external drives - are they totally safe - or can an external drive 'die'? "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" | |

If you do a forum search on "External Drive" you'll see there's been a number of threads where they're discussed. I recall that, in a few, users have mentioned problems they've had with a drive. So, while waiting for a reply here, you might find the info you're seeking in one of those older threads. I'm no expert on computers, but any drive can die. That applies to both internal and external drives. Some brands and models seem to have a higher failure rate than others. Making a backup copy of your favorite/important files is a good idea/practice. | |

Also check External 1 TB hard drives are now less than $100. Which are least prone to problems? Manufacturer and model poll discussion. | |

jd1961, you replace your external hard drives once a year? What do you do with the old ones, toss them away, or sell them? Seems like an expensive thing to replace your hard drives once a year. | |

Do not replace drives yearly, that is very expensive! If you are going through that much data I would suggest a Raid 5 set up. Same goes for Denner who made the original post. I know I have not been on here in a while but I am sure you know that I am a hard drive whore. If we are not talking about more than 500 GB of stuff I would also say you could back it up on DVD. This is still slightly more cost effective than hard drives. Newegg has a sale right now for 100 dvdrs for like $15 and free shipping. No hard drive is ever totally safe. You can have many back ups of your data and have a virus come along and eat it, people are mean and make those little bastards! You are more likely to have issues with external drives than internals. Externals have more stuff to them, such as the SATA to USB controller which can go bad. Also many external enclosures have no fans. Hard drives like fans and heat likes to eat hard drives. Hard drives have rotating parts and while theoretically stainless steel can last longer than you will it simply will not under the conditions it is in. As I have said before, with hard drives it is not a question of IF it will fail but rather WHEN will it fail. From a technical stand point, all hard drives will fail at some point. Fortunately, they can last longer than their useful life span. I recently seen a 15 year old drive a guy had me get stuff off of for him. The drive worked just fine, but who wants a 500 MB drive when they can get a 500 GB and use just as much physical space.? That drive simply was not useful any more even though it still worked. To answer your direct question. It is a great idea to back up your must have porn. How you do it simply depends on how much there is. How much are you data are you keeping redundant? Have a look on amazon, look through the reviews of the most popular external hard drives and you'll see a few people having dud drives. Remember even DVD's can go dud (they have a life expectancy and after a while will become unreadable, cheaper ones faster than others...I had this happen, backed up a load of things then went to access the data a couple years later and it's unreadable even though it had never been touched since) | |

I just want to correct this, I works my day job in computer repair, it has been a very, very, very long time since I've seen a virus destroy data files. The ones that are produced today either (1) want to reside secretly in the background to collect keystrokes or to bounce data off of, or (2) annoy you to go on to a web page and supply your credit card info for the promise of getting rid of their self-created annoyance. Once in a while an infection goes awry and prevents Windows from loading up. But destroying data just does not happen any more. They do not attack boot sectors, they do not attack file tables. Keep Windows updated with all the latest updates from Microsoft, and an anti-virus software with a current subscription, your data is safe. | |

This is just not feasible given the file sizes of porn these days. A 10mbps internet connection, fast for downloads, is often just 2mbps upload, which means a 1GB file is about an hour and a half to upload at max speed. 500GB porn backup would take a full month of non-stop full speed uploading. | |

Another things about these back up sites is that they limit the upload speed after a certain amount of data is transferred. Justme is right about the asymmetrical aspect of most internet connections, but it gets worse when the back up service throttles the intake to dial up speeds when they feel you are abusing the service. As for viruses and such, because they are not currently focusing on files does not mean that they will not again in the future. Speaking of boot sectors, I seem to be really good at losing them myself! Just wanted to tell about my new external. It's a HP Simple Save 2 TB, grabbed it at Amazon last week for the sale price of $159. Its main function when you receive it and set it up is to backup your data you already have on your other drives. It has the file-types/folders/locations, you want it to look at it and it will also back-up as you add new content to your other drives. I deleted the software that came with it and just use it as a normal external drive to save new content to. So far, it has been the quietest, least annoying external I've had. Stays very cool, looks nice especially if you have a HP computer with the same black gloss look and it works better than the others I use. No extended sleep time like the Western Digital drives have. Had bought the newer WD Elements 1 TB, but just filled it and unhooked it. Too whiny sounding, steady buzz, always sleeping and messing up my DL manager. Hopefully this HP Simple Save will hold up.
