Is Playboy living in the dark ages Hi I maybe wrong here and you may be able to get this on one of the playboy websites. I was chanel hopping last night and haven't checked out for year adult channel on sky tv in the UK. I saw a preview for Playboytv and it had a scene of a beach party with lots of hot women there, it looked really good but might be lame I dunno, It also showed loads of really unique sex series that looked really interesting. I thought stuff like this on a website with all these updates they show on these tv channels would make an awesome website and it was £19.99 to subscribe for a month to get 6 channels I think it was, maybe wrong on that. I just though watching porn this way seems quite dated when you have the internet which I would think would give you more subscribers as not many people can stay up every night watching it for it to be worth subscribing and would make more sense to put it all on a website with these daily updates. Or have both tv and the net. I had a look around and can't seem to see any website though so must be just on tv. I've never really understood though why Playboy doesn't have a hit website with all the babes and money they should be a leader. I think magazines and tv porn only is only hitting a small percentage of the market. Maybe I'm wrong, anyone have any thoughts. I wonder the same thing when I see porn producers offering material in ways that ignore the internet or doesn't treat the internet as the primary means of getting material to consumers. A lot of porn studios are guilty of this in that their websites are low quality compared with the best out there. The internet is no longer 'the future,' it's the present. But... Playboy may be the one exception to this. Playboy is still porn in the eyes of many, but it is really more softcore than most other companies. Some might class it with Maxim or even the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. It may be that there is a bigger market for that on TV. I often wonder the same things when I see porn DVDs in shops selling for $40. My thought is that there is no way that I'd spend more than a month's subscription fee on one low-budget DVD, but someone has to be buying them.

Well looks like I was wrong about them not putting them online too then, I went over to playboy.com and saw a link for playboy.tv and it mentioned watch online too, only £10.95 a month too so not bad price, might be worth trying it for a month, probably just streaming only and no downloads. But yeah I didn't see it mentioned when I went over to playboytv.com, I guess this is the tv's site and the playboy.tv is the online version. So at least they have made it available online. I think they could though still have 1 site and have a huge following online if done right. I do agree with you about its very much softcore stuff and still has a huge offline following, I guess it could still do both but just needs work getting the online site more upto date. Yeah lots of the major dvd companies and magazine companies haven't yet embraced what online could really achieve if they get a good upto date website with all the things people expect in this day and age. yeah some dvds are too expensive I agree, much prefer joining websites with lots of material. It has to be a real good and recommended dvd for me to fork out $40 though. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

Who can afford $40+ for a dvd? I am thinking that dvd sales really do not have that much life left. Playboy I a slowly disappearing thing. It probably would be gone if it did not have a long history and such good name recognition. Their online portion really needs to be stepped up. They have gotten better over the past few years but have a long way to go. They used to not even allow downloads from their sites. I think they have missed the boat some years ago. It isn't quite too late to make a serious attempt at a website, but they are leaving it very close. Cap'n. First off, yes Playboy has a pretty decent set of sites from what I have seen (never subscribed). However I think that misses the point. Playboy is as much about selling sex as they are about selling the wealthy, fantasy, "playboy lifestyle": * The mansion, with huge celebrity parties. * The chain of playboy clubs, with "Bunnies" serving cocktails to elite clientele. * And of course, the "Playmates". It was never really about selling "smut" to hardcore collectors like us. Yes, they dabble in a bit of that (and why wouldn't they) but they have ALWAYS held guys like us at arms length. I think most people don't even consider playboy to be porn really. Playboy is probably the only porn mag in which the average guy on the street wouldn't freak out if saw his daughter inside, and some guys would be proud of it. TV subscriptions like the one you describe aren't really meant for guys like us (unless the internet connection is down maybe). They appeal to: 1. Couples -particularly high end couples whose husband has bought the trophy wife fake boobs (and fantasizes that she could have been a playmate). 2. Business execs who are traveling and (for a number of different reasons) don't want to go all out and pay for an escort. Edited on Aug 17, 2011, 11:19am

All of the Adult stores here in the Orlando Area are still open (about 4 or 5), and most sell primarily DVD's. I figure there is still are market for about three types: 1. Guys who are two poor (or old school) to own a computer with an internet connection. Believe it or not about 40% of Americans do not have internet access, so that is still quite a bit. 2. Guys WITH internet access, but who must hide their porn viewing from their spouse, and therefore may not use the computer as their primary viewing method. They can watch the DVD when their wife or girlfriend is not home, and then hide it. 3. Couples

When I read badandy400's comment on my comment about $40 DVDs I was fomulating a response as I read through the rest of the thread. Much to my surprise, you beat me to it and said exactly what I think too.

I am not too sure about poor guys, many get internet and old computers free or near it. Older guys, I absolutely agree there. Many of you who have been on this site for a while know I have a massive collection, that also extends to dvds and magazines. I am still convinced that in a few years we will see much more decline in dvd sales. The internet will see to that. DSL and cable are still reaching people. It is cheaper, easier, and feels relatively anonymous. I would think people would be too poor for DVDs, not a computer and an Internet connection. I know I certainly couldn't keep up much of a DVD habit, especially at $40 per title. I have always felt way too poor for Playboy though, and would be just as happy to see them go under as a loud mouthed moralist would be (our reasons why would vary quite a bit of course).
I agree with these somewhat. Guys can still hide a lot of their digital "treasures" from their partners without much effort. Also, a DVD has to be physically hidden--a real pain in the ass when you can't fold up your closet and take it with you like a laptop. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Very true. I believe you and/or other members have mentioned how physical media is really on the decline with everything and everyone pushing streaming and downloadable content over hard copies. This is extremely convenient and portable but I have yet to have a DVD or magazine ruined by an electrical storm, virus, or dead hard drive. Who knows, maybe hard drive companies will even try to phase out the extra physical hard drives purchased for home and consumer use as so-called clouds become more popular. (Over badandy400's cold, dead hands of course. ) I have yet to use a cloud storage service myself, but I prefer to keep a few things private (and I'm not just talking about the porn, I swear!). I mean what's next, Google having the legal authority to preside over weddings and births? "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Don't forget when you buy a DVD you can pay in cash - that feels totally anonymous to some people. On the Internet you have to use a card/bank account to make the transaction, and lots of people worry about family etc. finding out. I know a few people who would love to be able to pay cash to join a site but would never entertain the idea of paying with plastic. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Some really great points raised here and yeah I do agree Playboy is more of a brand and out there very much with the big names, its dips its bunny ears in the hardcore waters very briefly but soon shakes them dry and is much more about beautiful women and celebrating that than engaging in the porn site brigade of hardcoreness. So yeah I guess I already knew this but its a slight shame cause I love the cute models they have, very classy which I'd love to see in some real hardcore scenes but shot beautifully and erotically. I think theres little of that in the porn world, its usually softcore beauty or full on hardcore with a sleazy backdrop. Some dvd companies like Private have done some admirable classy hardcore and Suze Randall I have to put in there but great websites there is little to choose from. I am liking though what they are doing at X-Art but I await longer vids and more of them. I still might sample the playboy.tv site though and have a change from the norm, sometimes I like to have a change to view something I've not seen much of and Playboy stuff its been a while. I think I read somewhere that Hugh Hefner turned over the entire Playboy empire to his daughter.....and it appears she's been running things for quite some time. I guess now, since the ball is in her court, any shortcomings or failures are destined to be on her shoulders.

Absolutely - pay with a card and there's a record. If you have a joint account, your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner is going to ask what those transactions are. They talk about "discreet billing" and no it doesn't come up as a payment to "sex crazed sluts" but nor does it come up as a recognisable name or a store or anything. 30 seconds browsing and you'd find out the type of site CCBill bills people for! If you live outside the USA, most sites still charge in US dollars which would also stand out on a bill a lot more. I still go into a gay store which sells porno DVDs - I rarely buy them now but it's a sort of gay lifestyle store which sells other stuff. You see men buy a DVD, say they don't want the case, pay cash and leave with the DVD in their pocket or bag. It's easy to hide a DVD and there's no record of the transaction, no entry in your history folder on your browser, no porno file on your hard drive. Add in the older guys who don't have the internet but grew up used to renting videos and then DVDs, people who have the internet but don't trust putting their credit card details online, people who will buy other things on the net but don't trust porno sites with their credit card details, and I think there'll be a market for DVDs for a while yet - but it's definitely declining and the internet is the future. I have a massive collection of porno DVDs and even videocassettes, I've never thrown any of them away and I wouldn't because most of them are pre-internet and I won't get those on the internet. I enjoy watching them on TV instead of a laptop. I very rarely buy new DVDs now though - maybe just one or two per year whereas before the net, I probably bought one on average about every fortnight. I buy the odd DVD still if it looks especially hot and isn't available to download - or if the download comes with DRM or costs nearly as much, I'd rather have the DVD. Still, I spend less on porn since the internet came along - you can get a lot more for your cash. DVDs are cheaper now - they start around £10 ($14) for the cheaper ones and most are around £20. For £20 though I can subscribe to a site for a month and download loads of videos for the price of one DVD. Even if I do want a DVD, I usually buy that online - new releases tend to be several pounds cheaper online than in the stores. The stores are definitely feeling the pinch - my local gay store has had to slash prices, it has less of a range and they've made some staff redundant. I feel badly for them in a way, but they happily charged rip-off prices before the internet and when there was no competition! I had little choice but to buy my videocassettes there, but those days are gone! Edited on Aug 22, 2011, 04:58pm
