Khan is buried in snow without power. :( If you guys are wondering why your feedback has been pending for the last couple days, it's because our man Khan has been stuck without power (and heat) in his home in Virginia. The storms took a beating in his area and his home is very secluded from civilization. I believe there was 4-5 ft of snow with more to come this week. It could take a few more days before they have power again. This affects the raffle tickets as well. Tickets are not awarded to reviews/comments until they are approved. Khan normally handles them all, but if he's not back by tomorrow morning I'll go through the feedback and approve as much as I can before the raffle. For any feedback that isn't approved, it will apply for the following raffle. I hope you're staying warm big guy. Get back soon! That's a pity for him, I feel his pain (to some extent, at least I have power!) I spent 4 hours shoveling this weekend... Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars. Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Wonderful woman. We're all, we're all very fond of her. Very free-spirited.

I am starting a new career next week and my title is 'power dispatcher". If Khan is without power next week I will try to pull what few strings a new guy has to get him power. :) That is what sucks about where I live. I am north enough in Ohio to get hit with lake effect snow and south enough to get hit with the stuff that comes from that way too. I guess the only good thing is that I dont get snowed on from the mountains. I hope he has candles and can find his old Playboy magazine stash. My thoughts go out to Khan and hope he has wood (for his wood burning stove, perverts!) and gets his juice hooked back up ASAP. Nothing is worse than being snowed in and without any power to surf the 'net or fire up the hard drives. Would badandy be able to survive this? I think he has a generator but eventually the gas runs out... I had absolutely no idea Khan and I shared the same state, as I never thought this "Blizzard of 2010" would even remotely affect PU staff--shows how much I know. I didn't lose any power (yet) as all the utilities are buried where I live. I got about two feet this weekend and am still digging out, plus there's the eight to twelve more inches predicted for the next couple of days. I hope he stays warm without having to resort to burning old porn magazines. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? You're not joking; when it snows this much it seems like you're stuck in some sort of hard labor purgatory where you just keep shoveling the same pile of snow over and over and over. I know it can happen to the body, but can you get repetitive stress disorder of the brain? "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Shit - it's no fun - we had the same some years ago after a gigantic snowstorm - a week without power and with that no general heat - except for some wood and a camping-thing to make food. All the best hopes for Khan "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Right you are, Ze Droolah - that's a minor thing here and now - let's get 'the power-victim' back...........but thanks, buddy - anyway... BTW: I thought that the Virginia/West Virginia-area normally have mild winters - guess nothing is normal - not here in Scandinavia either: the coldest January in many years - so much for the global heating, another btw...(the costs of indoor-heating are exploding, so maybe some are going to cut down the pornsites-spendings..., LOL) But, Rick: Las Vegas is probably sunny and varm?? If Khan is stuck for more than a week, maybe we should be sending a Saint Bernard with the brandy flask around his neck. That should give Khan a little cheering up. Wishing Khan the best and a speedy return.

By golly: What do you mean with: 'Houses are dirt cheap too PUers.' Is that the prizes of houses i LV-area, Navada? As you can see from my latest thread, I just quit my job - and the wife and I are thinking about moving OUT of the cold Scandinavia and settle with a good pension/savings elsewhere - mainly the USA (the far East is NOT it, even for the climate). We thought about Texas, south west or east (Del Rio, San Antonio-area, Austin ditto or south of Corpus Christi) or maybe Arizona - still it's got to be warm all year and without too much risk for tornadoes, ect. Not California - even if we got family in the San Fransisco bay-area.. "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

You should seriously consider Vegas as well! I've been here 7 years and couldn't think of any other place in the world I'd rather live. Sure it's hot during the summer, but that's not always a bad thing. Winters are cold but comfortable. Homes are as low as 200k for nice fairly new 2000 sq ft. There's no state income tax, good hiking, night life, gambling, close prox to CA. The nice areas of Vegas are all new and safe. I might be able to offer you some work also at some point, but I would want to meet with you and see if there's an opportunity. I guess I overlooked this when I first read it but it makes sense because of your engineering education and where you said you interned. Also this seems to be an overly elaborate way to make sure that if nothing else you will always have power for your 'personal data.' ;) Just don't pull a Homer Simpson and start causing a meltdown or China syndrome every few months. I hate to add to Wittyguy's doom and gloom but there are a number of ways the U.S. can kill you; health "insurance," our piss poor diet, and the death penalty are the top three. Seriously, you're on your own when it comes to health and do not approach it like W did with terrorism: "Bring 'em on." Having said that, the U.S. does have some nice climates; much of California--with the Terminator as governor to boot--though you said it's off limits, and it does have earthquakes. The southwest is quite warm without the humidity, though it might offer too much heat for Scandinavians. Texas is an option but I have to admit that some people love it to death, while others hate it to death, and it could secede at any moment. ;) There's also Florida, but it can get hit by very serious hurricanes, with year round humidity, and I'm not sure if that's the "far East" you're referring to. Doesn't every place have it's weather downside? In California, it's the feast-or-famine, drought or floods, plus earthquakes, in LV it's the blistering heat. In Oklahoma it's the tornados, in Florida, it's the hurricanes, in much of the country it's the frigid cold in the winters. You know what place is probably really moderate and doesn't get much bad weather? Virginia - yeah, I hear Virginia is really nice!

Don't do it, Denner. At your age (no insult intended, I am older than you) it could be too much of a culture shock. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Why don't you try Spain, many people, especially pensioners from the U.K. retire there. I'd, personally, stay right in Denmark. What a beautiful and civilized place. Just put a bit more coal on the fire during the winter. :-)

THANK YOU, ALL! ...for the good advises and the well-meant warnings. I've traveled a lot in the US - even worked in the Houston-area for half a year (but ok, that was back in 1989) - And have not been visiting the US since 1997 - guess many things have changed drastic since then... Your inputs certainly have given me a lot to think about and reconsider - still I've always been very fond of the USA in general... Thanks again - appreciate it. It's funny - people talk about the "optimism" of the US - which is true as compared to the UK, which definitely has an "empire lost" malaise about it - at least when I was there. But when I traveled a couple of years ago in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, I found that despite very challenging and complex political situations there, that among the people there was a great deal more optimism than I find in much of the US - with things like the Tea Party movement and the Right Wing Christian crap, there's huge amounts of fear and longing for the past and a desire to hide from reality among large portions of the population in the U.S. Which doesn't mean that I'm planning a move out of this country - it's a pretty fascinating place, in my opinion - with the huge and diverse immigrant population being among the most interesting and enlivening aspects, much to the chagrin of the Lou Dobbs of the world.

Maybe like that thing with: 'The grass is greener....' Some europeans want to live in the US and maybe vise versa. About people: At my/our many trips to or stays in the US - somewhere like 90% of the Americans, I/we met, where generally much more friendly (and with good karma) that I've seen in a lot of European countries - west - and the old east - not generalizing, though - (France - those folks are for many a bit different - nobody than the french matters - was it Charles de Gaulle, that put that in them?) Maybe it's different NOW - in the US? Still we all got only ONE life! - and why be afraid of taking chances to do something new and wild - ok, getting to a point where everything is so damn easy and secure - do I want that for the next 20 years or how long I will live - man, it's also a challenge... BTW: Great how well this PU works, also off-topics - it's very enjoyable and positive to communicate with you guys! OH, getting back to the subject: Any news about Khan?? "Life is what you make it." Denner has a very positive attitude and lots of "bonhomie," to use the French term, which might seem a bit ironic considering what he said about the French. ;) But even after some "shock" phase, I think that Denner would probably adjust and do fine here in the US, though the warnings others have given are important, especially about the "health" system here, which is an utter disgrace, thanks to the greed and ineptitude of Congress -- another benchmark in the "Utter Disgrace" department. The US lost popularity in Europe during the Bush years. I mean, in Germany there was a grass roots "movement" of people who, upon finding dog excrement on a sidewalk, would place a stick into it with a picture of that president affixed to the top. I always found that amusing. As for the French, they are our allies and our friends. They can be very nationalistic as well, but so can Americans. Remember "Freedom Fries?" I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Well guys, I'm back for now. Thank you all for the well wishes. It's been a really rough few days tucked in the middle of a really rough winter here. Our power went out last Friday and just came back on late last night. As Rick mentions, we live in the woods, which means we're at the bottom of everyone's priority list when it comes to getting the downed lines fixed. Of course it also means when you lose power, your water, heat and pretty much everything else is out. Our driveway is a football field and a half long but luckily, we hire guy to plow us out after the worst storms. It got down to 3degrees one of those nights and to say the house got cold would be an understatement. On the plus side, the wife keeps us pretty well stocked in water and soup. We had a small camp stove for heating food and a small wood stove to keep us from freezing altogether. Suffice it to say, this winter ain't been any fun !! Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience my absence caused. Thanks again for the good wishes and we'll hope that though there's still several feet of snow on the ground, that the power stays on from now on. Man.....Drooler - thanks for this fine input. That your health system is an 'utter disgrace' is well known to some/a lot of europeans - but in the long run that can be taken care of from back here....something like 'world-wide-health-security' some ok (after all) companies deals with that here in Denmark. Was a little hard on the french, agree - but it's also how a lot of Scandinavians see it, it's still: Oh, we (the french) won the Second World War for Europe - NADA! - It was thanks to the british and above all the USA and the sacrifice of US-troops that Europe got to be a free place to live after 1945. AND during the Cold War, too.. We OWE our freedom to the USA - and the british, of course! But what is this 'Freedom Fries'? - never heard of it... No apologies necessary, Khan. We're just glad that you're OK and that you're back. Several days of exposure to cold, even in a house, is really bad for ya. I wonder if an alternative, such as a home generator, would be of help. Another expense, but who knows? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

There was some restaurant in the DC area, if memory serves, that changed the menu from "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries" as a snub to the French after they declined to go headlong into the Iraq war that the Bush administration started. This was in the American news/media/propaganda system. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I don't know the specifics of it in Virginia, but here in Maryland you can get something like 60% or more of the cost of a solar power system back. There are government subsidies and tax credits that make it worth looking into. It sounds like you have the ground available and, if Virginia is anything like here, it might be cost effective for you to get off the grid altogether. Yeah, more expensive than a backup generator at first, but in the long run, it can pay for itself. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

When it comes to WWII I think the Russians played the biggest part in winning it even though the U.K., Canada and other Commonwealth countries, the U.S. etc. played a big part, of course. When it comes to the war in the Pacific I give the Americans full marks even though other nations were involved there as well! The French contribution in comparison to those countries was pathetic. You would have never known it as they swaggered down the main street of my home town during the occupation. Germans better got out of the way of the conquerors! :-) I am nevertheless a Francophile, I just hate their waiters!!! As to the cold war, yes, thanks America (and secondarily NATO). America also had almost no fighting on its home soil. Yes, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked (a U.S. territory at the time); there was fighting in Alaska, though in essentially uninhabited areas; and the Philippines had American military bases (part of our growing empire at the time). There were also German u-boats that made it all the way to America's east coast, as well as a few tiny attacks on the west coast but incredibly insignificant compared to civilians living in Europe through the war. I think this had some good results because the majority of Europeans had such a shock of witnessing firsthand how cruelly people and nations could treat one another. As a result (with U.S. money to help) western Europe became one of the more civilized and progressive regions in the world in the decades that followed. Even parts of the former Soviet Bloc in eastern Europe are seeing improvements in quality of life since the end of the Cold War. If you ask me American civilians living in America during the war got off pretty easy. And in today's 'Global War on Terror' all people have to do is change the channel to forget about it. Oh man, if you don't know you may not want to know, but here goes anyway: Some geniuses in the U.S. congress got all huffy that the French refused to join our coalition of the willing prior to the start of the Iraq war in 2003 and as a result had the cafeterias at the U.S. Capitol building rename their french fries and french toast to, well, you know. They reverted to the old names in 2006 when, what you know, the reasons for going to war turned out to be completely fabricated bullshit. I remember around the same time Fox News shouter Bill O'Reilley urged viewers to boycott French goods and some restaurants supposedly did. I think some restaurants even poured out French wine on purpose...after having already paid for it, thus totally misunderstanding the purpose of a boycott. I'd like to think we'll never live that one down but I am sure the next time duty calls some lapel pin patriot dumbass will pull something even stupider of his ass because we're number one! Turboshaft, you certainly got GOOD points here.. well spoken! 'I think this had some good results because the majority of Europeans had such a shock of witnessing firsthand how cruelly people and nations could treat one another. As a result (with U.S. money to help) western Europe became one of the more civilized and progressive regions in the world in the decades that followed.' When Hitler invaded Poland, the asshole had 'a go' from Stalin - allied - the two sons of bitches. Then UK stood alone! - after the rest of Europe had fallen - literally the British had their back to the wall... And the first major victory was the defeat of the nazi-uboats - and an opening for a much better help from the USA - though a LOT of US-sailors had lost their lives up till that time. Then came El Alamein i '42 and Stalingrad in '43, then Italy, then D-day in Normandy.... BUT before Hitler invaded Russia (June 22, 1941 - Operation Barbarossa) - no one should never forget the alliance between Hitler and Stalin. Of course Hitler met his fate in the East and millions of russians were cannon fodder - again thanks to Stalin - BUT: this was fighting on OWN soil for the russians - NOT for the US and Canadian soldiers in the west of Europe... Did not know that expression: 'French Fries' - but still got shelves of WWII military history......anyone know who assassinated Ernst Roehm? Anyway - we europeans in the old West - owe our freedom and lives to the sacrifice of US, British and Canadian soldiers... try to visit the Normandy Coast (France) when you get to Europe. Welcome back, Khan - glad you made it through the 3 degree nights - whew, that's cold! And with only a small wood stove! Damn, I'd be wanting a bon fire with 3 degree temperatures - lol

I never meant to give the impression that the Soviet Union did the fighting in order to make sure we kept our freedom. I am simply stating the fact that without their huge sacrifices (for selfish reasons, no doubt) the war might have taken a different turn or have lasted considerably longer.

Thanks, Turboshaft. You remember it more clearly than I do. Maybe I was just too sick of the whole lies and propoganda that I shut some of it out of memory as a coping strategy. This little bit of holier-than-thou flag waving was appreciated by the kinds of flea brains that would put their hands on their hearts and sing "The Star Spangled Banner" in front of the Statue of Liberty -- not realizing where it had come from. But at least they didn't go so far as to give us "Freedom Kiss" and "Freedom Maid Outfit." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I visited the Statue of Liberty one time when I was in New York. I neglected to put my hand over my heart, or to sing The Star Spangled Banner. But if I ever do go back there, maybe I will put my hand over my heart in joyous celebration of liberty. Since I can't really carry a tune, never could really, and am actually getting so bad that even I can now hear how bad I sound, I probably won't be singing the ballad. Or maybe I could hum it silently. As for French Fries being renamed Freedom Fries, this is the first I am hearing about it. I think I have a couple of French coins with the Statue of Liberty on them. I put them somewhere. That's a lot cheaper than paying for a flight to New York to see the real thing.
