Download Managers What Download Managers do you use and are the free, if not what is the cost. Cybertoad Since 2007

I used to use GetRight (pay), but now I use DownThemAll! exclusively. It is free though they ask for PayPal donations if you love their service. It fully integrates with Firefox, so messing around with passwords is no problem. I use Google Chrome exclusively at work, but I haven't tried to use any Download Managers with it. That might become an issue if I switch over to it at home. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Second Grand Order Poobah in the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo

I just came across a site that forbids the use of download managers and was wondering if the built-in download managers in the various browsers are included. They were also mentioning that queuing is not allowed, but I do that all the time with Firefox and no site has ever complained. Are they talking about applications that "harvest" everything in site? As to "DownThemAll," I got that plug-in some time ago but never knew how to use it so I un-installed. I would like to know the procedure. How is it normally used in sites that permit it? I'm embarrassed about admitting ignorance when it comes to download managers but to me it's always been enough to right click, "save as ..," repeat on the next link etc., while Firefox did the rest.

Which is also no problem with GetRight. I just installed my PC from the scratch and it took me only a few moments to set GetRight up again. For me it works fine with most of the site I'm subscribed too.
I tried it once but gave up soon because I don't want a browser that sends back all the URLs I surf to Google. Nonetheless I have to say that Chrome is quite nice and very fast too. At least that was true for the beta version of this browser.

As for GetRight all you need to do is to set the User Agent to the string that your favourite browser sends and that's it. Event though most sites won't permit to use a download manager I never got into trouble doing so. It's only a few sites I was able to download sets (no ZIP sites only) using FlashGot exclusively but those where sites I would never ever recommend!

Hey, Mr. Smut, didn't I confess ignorance when I talked about download managers? Could you give me an example what a "string" is? :-) Thanks.

I also use DownThemAll with Firefox. I've only came across one site, Teen Dreams, that it didn't work with. Even with that it worked fine for saving video, just not photos. Something to do with the extra security they had. What I like the most about DownThemAll is that I can save the fist photo/video as whatever I want to call it with *num* behind it and then I can just right click on the photo and I can save it using the option of dTa One Click. It will then save the next photo in same spot, with the same name, just one number higher then the previous photo. Only problem is, I have yet to find a way to restart each set at 1. So the number behind the first photo in the set will probably be something random like 452. But it makes for a easy way to save photos then going save as and renaming it each time. I've never been one to download full sets, I only keep the images I like. So DownThemAll works great for me.

Basically a string is only a sequence of characters. When talking about the User Agent I had the string in mind that you see in the about dialog of your browser like for instance Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4 :-) Cheers, Smut

I was using Free Download Manager (a free program), with Firefox. But lately I can't use Firefox to log onto a site. The browser does not send my username + password over the internet. That happened last week after I upgraded Firefox to the latest version. So some program on my PC (a firewall or other anti-danger program) is blocking me from logging onto a site as a member, tho I can visit the site, such as PU, without logging on with Firefox. To get around the problem of logging on, I downloaded Opera, and now I can log on to sites with Opera. But I am still getting used to Opera, since I've only been using it a few days, and I have not been able to use Free Download Manager with Opera yet. Maybe I will work out what that problem is. But I can download from sites with Opera once I log on. I am just not using Free Download Manager to download the files. With Firefox, Free Download Manager works very simply, and it's easy to control. But with Opera, I am going to have to play around a little with Free Download Manager to see how to use it. Or maybe I will switch to one of the free download managers suggested on this thread, such as DownThemAll! Free Download Manager did what I wanted it to, reliably and simply: downloading files from sites. I would like to find the &*)_$# program that is stopping me from logging onto a site with Firefox. I've tried disabling some of the firewall and other anti-danger programs on my PC, but I am afraid to leave them disabled, and while they were temporarily disabled, I was not able to log on with Firefox. Did someone say that computers were supposed to get easier to use with time? When will that happen? After I am dead?

mr smut, thanks for the offer of help. My Firefox problem is not just one specific site, but any site that requires username + password entry. With Firefox: I can't access Yahoo email, vote or reply at pornusers, enter the members area of paysites I belong to (Domai, Justteensite, Justteenmovie), or enter as a member other sites I am a member of. That is because my PC is blocking me from sending the username + password that is required. A firewall or similar program is blocking me. This happened after I downloaded a Firefox update last week. I worked around the problem by downloading Opera, a different browser. Luckily, I have no log on problems with Opera. I could have tried Microsoft Internet Explorer browser for a work-around, but I've heard that browser is very susceptible to computer attacks, and that is why I have used Firefox in the past. If I play around long enough, try different ideas, I think I will get my Firefox working right. In the meantime, Opera is doing a good job. I'm using Opera to post this message, because Firefox won't let me post at pornusers (You have to log on before you can post).

I agree with jd, I'd tray uninstalling and reinstalling first. If that doesn't work you can also go to http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Support+Website+Forums and ask the question there. I also found this from that site http://kb.mozillazine.org/Error_loading_websites You can check it out, maybe that'll help. It seems to kinda describe the same problem you are having.

Hello lk2fireone, that was an odd problem I think. Sorry for not answering earlier but I just came home from work a few minutes ago. I didn't get the point that it was all sites that blocked you otherwise I might have come up with the same idea? At least the solution suggested by jd1961 and Jeffrey99 worked for you which is great. I suppose it depends upon how you set up your manager. I use DownThemAll! and wget. DownThemAll can be set up to download only one concurrent chunk and one concurrent file. I cannot see any site having an issue with that, or, for that matter, even detecting that files are being queued or a manager is being used. Wget can operate in the same way. Give DownThemAll! another try. It's well worth the effort. How it's used depends upon the site. I believe it's set to four simultaneous chunks with four simultaneous downloads (i.e. four simultaneous files). You can click on a link and add it to the queue immediately, or have it open the manager and change the download directory, for instance. You can right click and have it download all links on a page, or all links that correspond to a certain file type (i.e. jpegs, zips, movies, etc.). Someone mentioned having trouble with it on TeenDreams. I don't know why. That's the only manager I've ever used there, both for pictures and movies, without a problem.

Do these download managers work with Internet Explorer too? I am just curious as to the benefits of download mangers. Why would the sites be opposed to them? Sorry if I sound like a newbie :)

Not that I use it, but I would figure all download managers that aren't extensions or add-ons for other browsers would work with Internet Explorer. There are basically two benefits to using a download manager. First, they accelerate your download by breaking the file into several pieces and downloading the pieces simultaneously, That's the reason some sites don't like 'em - they can put a strain on their servers. I can vouch for that because I have a server app I upload files with. I had someone hit me by trying to download a file in 20 pieces and it damn near locked my PC up. The second reason to use one is to resume a download that gets interrupted. Personally, I like freedownloadmanger, available at www.freedownloadmanager.org. It's IE compatible (although, if you're surfing for porn, I'd recommend using just about anything but Internet ExploDer) And never apologize for being a newbie. No one is born with knowledge - we have to ask questions to learn. :-) Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. Edited on Jan 12, 2009, 07:34pm

As RagingBuddhist mentioned, those that are extensions of Firefox will not work with IE. DownThemAll! is a Firefox extension for both Linux and Windows. If you need assistance in finding it and installing it, just let me know, and I can PM you the details. I'm never a fan of putting direct links in forums. In any case, it's very easy to install and use. It's free, with no nagware or spyware. Wget is another matter altogether. It's a Linux utility and has been ported to Windows. I find it easy to use, but the commands are a bit arcane and there is a learning curve. If you take the time to learn it, however, you will find it's exceedingly powerful. It is, however, run from the command line, either a DOS or Linux shell, and not from the GUI.

Not a download manager BUT if you use Opera to download although you can't queue up downloads you can download over 10 items at once and you can pause and resume broken downloads (depends on the source as some you can't) Perhaps Not as handy as being able to through a whole site worth of content to download over night and whilst you are at work, but for casual downloading I find its the Bomb!

I've never used a download manager, but I have been having big problems downloading from Jsexnetwork lately. Their tech guy recommended that I use GetRight - so I guess I'll be trying it out - given how un-techy I am, it ought to be an adventure. Well, not much of an adventure - and that's a good thing from my perspective - time download - approx 1 minute - time to set up - less than 1 minute - effectiveness - well, a site where I was getting broken files and downloads of 100-200 kb/sec, I'm now downloading at 516 kb/sec - can't beat that for 2 minutes work. Do you ever have an instance where you right click to download a vid from a site and the download manager goes to download a php file? What do you do then? Newbie question #337 - more to come, I'm sure

If download manager shows the download file as a php, or some file type that is obviously not a video, I refresh the page, then see if the file will download as a video-type file. Sometimes that works, sometimes not. The god of computers can be very arbitrary, as far as I can tell. The only good thing about php and other file types that you sometimes get instead of a video clip, is that the file size is usually very small, so you can tell that the file is not a video clip, and the small-sized file downloads very fast, compared to a regular video file, so that indicates you didn't get the video you wanted. Usually, I just download the files, then realize afterwards that file isn't a video file, because it won't play. Looking at the file type before downloading is something I should get into the habit of doing, I guess.

If it's a php then try left clicking instead. Depending on your browser(i use firefox with flashgot) and settings it may ask you how you want to handle the file, download, open or flashgot. Then you can choose use your download manager. The problem is some file types, like wmv open in the browser, so if you left click it will do that. In that case you have to rename the file. If you use free download manager sometimes the actual file name will be in the comment.

I recently switched back to Free Download Manager. I had been using DownThemAll on Firefox, but it was really draining my system resources when trying to do something on another tab, my work, typing, would stop for 10-15 seconds when each new download started and all the keys I had pressed during that time would then start working. Though admittedly, it was pretty funny when it first happened since I was typing an email and probably typed 4-5 words during this frozen time. Then all of a sudden the words started appearing. You could probably use that as a funny practical joke on someone by saying your computer is haunted and types by itself. IDM is free for 30 days, I think. But Free Download Manager, in my experience, is a very good free alternative. Once you get the feel of it, you can click it from your start menu and it will put a little square on your browser. When you go to download something, you just drag the link to this square and that's it. It also has where you can store your login/password to each site. Without it, I would have had a horrible experience with Porn Pros, but it made a huge difference in the site's performance. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

My reservation with download managers (not that my sites exclude their use yet) is that if a couple of members with really fast connections decide to use download managers to systematically download everything they can at the full speed of their connection that can slow down the experience for everyone else visiting the site. I don't want members being put off because someone else is hogging as much bandwidth as they can and making the site run slowly. It's just not fair. Agree with Ed2009 - especially: "I don't want members being put off because someone else is hogging as much bandwidth as they can and making the site run slowly. It's just not fair." If you slow down other users because of a very fast connection along with a DM and stay put for hours and hours grabbing all you can it's questionable - good for that user, not so good for the rest of us... But it's really a much more complexed problem...maybe that's why some sites have a no to DMs - but I also dislike that - a DM is a nice tool. So will I scratch my beard, laugh and say like Indio in the movie "For A Few Dollars More": " - And then I go into the bank and just grab all the money" "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

manhole, download managers enable you to queue and schedule downloads on many sites, it is usually much easier and often faster (DL speeds are better) than downloading stuff a few at a time. I'd recommend looking into Download Them All which is a plug-in for Firefox if you haven't used one before and try it out, it is free and works pretty well - although perhaps not as well as some that you pay for. Can understand with your sites or any of the sites that are not the ones bragging "Biggest reality porn collection on the internet!" or "World's Greatest Porn Network!" and always topped off with "Unlimited downloads!!!" One of those severely limits download speeds without a download manager, a difference of 400 kb/s to 2000 kb/s, which in turn is false advertising since they say "unlimited" downloads. Another more neutral advantage to download managers is to the people who are still on dial-up or live in countries with just poor internet connections since the manager would often let them resume if the download connection is lost. On your side, I honestly wouldn't use a download manager on a site like yours. The biggest negative to using one for me is that I download way too much content that I probably won't even watch. Like my last month at Videobox, 912 GB in one month and I've probably watched 1/10th of it. My rule now is if the site isn't limiting my download speeds severely, Viv Thomas Video, also does this, I won't use a download manager at all. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

manholelover, I'm using a Mac too, and whereas there are other download managers for the Mac (perhaps not as many as for Windows), DownThemAll works just fine with Firefox. (I generally use Safari, but use Firefox to keep, er, extra-curricular activity separate.) As well as what slutty said, I find it handy: * To queue downloads; although it's generous, my bandwidth is capped by my ISP, but midnight-8am doesn't count - so I queue stuff from sites I'm subscribed to and just click start after midnight. * To download all pictures from sites that don't offer zips; and similarly grab FLVs from sites that don't specifically offer video downloads. * To rename files before you download them; some sites name their zips unhelpfully, so renaming it as you download it means you don't have to figure out who's who later. Let me know if you have any other Mac-specific queries

You are not at all! * As you've discovered, your browser (Safari or Firefox) by default saves things into your 'Downloads' folder - in your home folder, that you can get to from the Go menu, or clicking the home icon on the left of a Finder window. * Assume that you are happy finding stuff here and copying it to your external drive (just drag and drop!) * If you want downloads to go to your external drive by default, go to Safari > Preferences > General - you can change the default downloads folder there; or Firefox > Preferences > General. * Either way, just find the folder you want to save things in and downloads should go there from now on. I have a folder on an external drive for new downloads; I, er, inspect them and then file them. * Again, either way, you can right-click on a file and choose Download linked file as... or Save link as... to choose the location on a case-by-case basis. (Depending on your setup, you may need to go to mouse or trackpad system prefs to enable right-clicking) HTH

As an aside ... Be aware that saving directly to an external drive *may* slow down your downloads. IMO, it's generally a better idea to download to a local drive and then move the file(s) to the external. sorry to continue with the banal questions, the mac rookie thatI am... But when i try to drag a file downloaded to my hard drive to the external drive, it won't let me! I can drag it, but i get the"no entry" sign. I've downloaded something and selected the hard drive as the location, but it still downloaded to my Mac's hard drive? i'm sure there's something really simple that I'm missing!!

Hmm.. first thought: * Can you right-click on the disk, choose Get info - what is the 'Format'? * Is there anything on it already that you need to keep? Let me know and I'll try to advise further!

hi there, The format is Windows NT file system....I'm assuming this isn't mac compatible, hence why i'm having trouble downloading things to it. Should i get a new one? Thanks for your help.

Glad you sorted it out! I figured perhaps your drive was formatted as NTFS which is read-only on Mac OS - but wanted to check if you had anything on it before telling you to reformat it If you formatted it as Mac OS, you'll find it a bit more responsive, but can only use it on the Mac; as FAT32 you may see the odd filename glitch but it can be used on Windows too.
