Trust Votes Just wondering how many actually give out 'No' Trust votes to others. I think I've gave out one to a user who was blantely schilling a site. However, I've always kinda just ignored others who I have not trusted. Does anyone actually give out no trust ratings or are they the same as me and just kind of ignore the obvious ones? As best as I can recall, I've given one No Trust vote so far. I think it was because a new member wrote a review that had the facts wrong about a site, and it appeared he never actually joined the site he was reviewing. I've given out a ton of Yes Trust votes. That's about the only way I vote, because I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt on this type of vote to members. I've received one No Trust vote from Anonymous. Didn't appreciate the No vote, but had to learn to live with it, because there's not much I can do about it. Would like to know who Anonymous is, because then I'd like to return the favor, and give him a No Trust vote. Is that the way the system is supposed to work? No, because "Anonymous" is just a way of hiding your identity. So why not allow all reviews and all posts to be "Anonymous" as well? Edited on Sep 08, 2009, 07:34pm

This is a good question, it would make a good poll question too if it has not been asked already. I give them both out as they are earned. When a user shows to be on the same page as most of the rest of us I will give them a trust vote of yes. In the case that people seem to be shilling or simply way off base I give them a no. It is important to note that these users do not have to be in total agreement with me to be trustworthy. A recent example is the liking of pubic hair. Because a user loves a bush does not make their review or comments void. Granted when they put bush as a pro I read it is a con. I can read into that on my own just as any other member can. I personally have not give out many trust votes lately because there are not many newly established users. I have tended away from throwing yes votes out to people for a single review. Although, I think I will have a look at Dracken come to think of it. He has been very active in the review section. Back to the NO topic. NO votes are very important in a place like this. There are so many people with no (as in none) votes yet that it becomes hard to tell if these people have zero votes because people to not trust them or if they are simply unnoticed. The NO vote allows us to tell which of those people are simply unnoticed or which are untrustworthy without any confusion. A NO vote can always be changed if the person straightens out. I guess I should start giving out "No" trust votes, but sparingly. It would improve the community. I usually just ignore those whom I would give one to. That means they could slip through the cracks and get one or two Yes votes, and as we all know Yes votes tend to multiply.

How do you get trust votes? Does someone just finally trust that you are not a spammer and give you a vote? Remember I am new here and just trying to figure everything out. Trust Ratings are something for the Users ... not really for webmaster accounts. While the system has been modified a few times (see later announcements), you can see the initial announcement about Trust Ratings here Hope that helps. I'm pretty much in the ballpark with Wittyguy, and perhaps in the anaconda-infested swamp! Whew! ;) I don't like giving no-trust votes. Being in a caring and sharing mood at the moment, I'll confide that it actually hurts to do it. So I have to work my way up to it. Gather evidence. Once there is a preponderance of it, and I'm starting to get more pissed off and less caring and sharing, I might just click that "No." I almost did it recently to a member who seemed to be shilling the fuck out of a couple of dodgy Russian sites. Then I looked at his trust record ... nothing but "no's" already that were months old. So I let it go for the time being. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I have given out no a few times to those who I thought were shills. Otherwise, no comment if their review says little or not much. If a new reviewer shows effort, I give a yes. I don't like anonymous votes. If you have something to say, say it and be an adult. I have one no vote by anonymous and I think the person confused me with someone else. I am not terribly worked up by it, but it isn't right. As far as webmasters, I agree with no formal system of trust votes, but informally I give a yes to Advent. She sticks to the rules for posting and also tries to be helpful. I am glad she gets involved in PU.

One thing about trust votes that I am not a fan of is getting a raffle ticket for 5 votes. This can tempt users to give votes to people for doing very little to warrant any vote. Someone put a small review up and they get 10 trusts for it? I believe the trust system should be for trusting, not for money. I also believe the trust system should not be used lightly. There should be a little bit of establishment of a new user before voting either way. I am not saying that raffle tickets for voting should be taken away. I am simply saying I am not in 100% agreement with it, but I do not need to be. I didn't realize that anyone got a raffle ticket for receiving 5 trust votes, badandy. But if that is the rule wouldn't it be nothing but an altruistic act on someone's part if they gave a trust vote too quickly to someone new? After all there's nothing in it for the one giving the vote. I do agree that sometimes trust votes, negative and positive, are given too quickly. Still don't know who gave me a negative trust on my very first review. Bwahaa! I agree it wasn't much but I was honest in my assessment of the site as I saw it. Everyone knows by now that I'm of sterling character yet the culprit has not yet reversed his verdict so I'll have to continue to live with that stain on my record. :-) P.S. Just realized that you might mean that PUs get a raffle ticket for giving five trust votes. Was that it? Edited on Sep 10, 2009, 07:47pm

Yes, you get tickets for GIVING OUT 5 votes. There is something in it for giving the votes out and I do not agree with that. I am thinking the staff decided to give tickets for that to help get it going, which is fine. It just depends on which side of the issue you look at. I suggest that we also get tickets for posting a poll question. It is damn hard to find an interesting topic that has not already been done and it definitely would help to keep the site fresh. I also disagree with getting tickets for five trust votes. If you have been here for a while, you already have given trust votes to those before you. The only way to give out five trust votes in one week is if we at PU are really lucky that week and add five top notch reviwers or we go to those who are not truly ready to be trusted.

I got a negative trust rating about 2 weeks after I joined PU, from the same Anonymous. I try to regard it as a "stain of honor". But I do think the Anonymous label encourages PU members to give out negative ratings without having to stand behind them. I'm actually surprised there aren't more negative ratings given out by Anonymous. What a wonderful way to dump on people and vent yourself.

Maintaining your anonimity is more to guard against just what you said in post #2 here - keeping someone you've given the thumbs down to from doing the same to you just out of spite. But I do think there should be some way to get a thumbs down removed - like maybe after a certain amount of time. Just about every thumbs down I've seen has come early in a person's membership here and people do improve with time. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

lk2fireone, I just read your negative rating comments. They make no sense to me and I am an English professor. If I had not already given you a trust vote, I would do so again. I hope you don't care what someone would say who hides behind anonymous.

Thanks, mbaya. It's foolish to worry about a negative trust rating. There are more important things in life, like the next good porn site that we might discover. :)

I know trust votes are set up to encourage better reviews. However, how about something like that for webmasters? I think a positive vote tells everyone something and a negative one shows disapproval. Yes I am thinking of recent events.
