I don't think this is totally true. Not everybody in favor of abortion rights are against legalized prostitution, though that would likely still involve some sort of state control, probably akin to what they're trying to do to porn.

The problem is porn and prostitution have different histories, at least within the U.S. I would argue that in the last few decades porn has become considerably safer in comparison to prostitution, largely through non-governmental control. Of course in places where brothels are legal it has become safer as well, though most jurisdictions aren't moving to become like Nevada.

The thing is it isn't always legislators, judges, or executives who "tell" us who we can and cannot have sex with. California outlawed gay marriage with the voter-approved Prop 8 back in 2008. "The will of the people," we're told to believe, though I would be inclined to call it "mob rule," since it was a decrease in civil rights. And oddly enough all those political howler monkeys who are so in love with words like "freedom" or "liberty" seem to not want to apply either of them to marriage, especially when it comes to teh gayez.

I appreciate the intent of those trying to protect performers' health, especially with so many young people who have the rest of their lives to live with the consequences, but this bill could just push businesses out of the state. California, mostly southern California, is one of the few places in the U.S. grown up enough to allow porn to be legally produced, and I don't think it's doing itself any favors passing feel-good legislation (metaphorically speaking, if it's going to involve condoms). By Kink's standards, Pissing.com always seemed mild to me, especially compared to something like the also no-longer-updating Water Bondage (which is very much what it sounds like). But it still sucks because I liked what Kink.com was doing with the golden shower genre, albeit however briefly.

Kink.com has been thinking of moving out of San Francisco for a while now, even proposing that they turn the historic San Francisco Armory into office space (I assume after thoroughly gassing it with chlorine dioxide--I've seen what goes on in their videos! ).

You know California is getting too regulatory for porn when even San Francisco is too restrictive!

Holy hell! The hypocrisy of some of these companies is just maddening. All the shit you could legally pay for with a credit card--weapons, prescription drugs, hate literature--that could do measurably greater amounts of harm, but some rough porn is off limits. Like a few years back, when the major credit card companies and PayPal started disallowing people from donating money to WikiLeaks, while still allowing money to go to some hate groups.

But are banks really that bad compared to something like a porn company? Well, British bank HSBC make take the we-do-whatever-the-fuck-we-want cake on that one--admitting to laundering billions of dollars for violent drug cartels in Colombia and Mexico. (I guess some companies really are "too big to jail." )

I may not believe in hell, but if there is one I hope there's a special pit reserved just for revenge porn assholes.

Sadly I see revenge porn as the logical byproduct of the ubiquity of the digital camera combined with some people's desires to use the permanence of the Internet as a weapon. And this is in a world where "Don't Be Evil" Google's Eric Schmidt has said "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place."

That's a chilling statement, worthy of a comic book villain and very much a reflection of our vile victim-blaming culture. If a girl didn't want to have her nude photos posted on the Internet then maybe she shouldn't have taken them in the first place. Right, because when you have a boyfriend take photos of you, you're not just having sex with him, you're having sex with everyone he's ever been with.

I think after revenge porn the next thing I hate is slut shaming, or the double standard our society places on the sexual activities of men versus women. If a man has had multiple partners or lots of casual sex, why, he's just being a man, fulfilling his instinctual desire to spread his seed far and wide. But if a woman does the same thing--fuck her! No one gave her permission to do that, and any humiliating thing that comes out of it is her fault, and hers alone.

Thus, you get malicious pricks like Hunter Moore, a sleazeball so cruel and shameless he makes Girls Gone Wild's Joe Francis look like Voltaire. If you haven't heard of him, Moore founded Is Anyone Up?, a revenge porn site that he eventually had to sell because of numerous complaints that alleged the site involved stolen photos and possibly underage postings. In a truly just world an immoral Internet parasite like Hunter Moore would be taken to the top of a very tall building and thrown off, but I'll settle for an indictment from the FBI instead. I frequently read Slate.com--or skip through it looking for something to read, since at least half of it is insufferable bullshit about TV shows and cheap clickbait--and they have a blog called the Gentleman Scholar. It's an advice column that mostly covers minutiae no more pressing than how to "properly" wear dress clothes (as if there aren't enough goddamn pointless unwritten rules to worry about already) and other trivial concerns of the white collar office world.

Obviously, I'm not a fan--which is like saying RagingBuddhist isn't always a happy camper --or even advice columns in general, but to me the word "gentleman" is so often used as a polite way to say that you think you are better than others. And asking for advice on such a subject reads like a how-to guide of hubris. Sometimes people need to realize just putting on a suit and tie doesn't magically transform you into a better person. It may make you a better dressed person, but even that is overrated.

Again, when people are honest about what they really do, like Larry Flynt has generally been, and don't try to come off as something more sophisticated simply because they don't show those uncouth genitalia or have a column called "Asshole of the Month," then I have a lot more respect for them. I guess it comes down to trying to prove that the offending shoot or video was actually shot in the district, which I guess could be done by a tech savvy prosecutor or a conservative judge. Ah, ASU, the same school that had the balls to not give President Obama an honorary degree when he spoke at their commencement in 2010. Just to give some perspective he had already been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize at that point (granted, that's an award that's also been given to such less-than-peaceful characters as Henry Kissinger and Yasser Arafat).

I may regret saying this, but I'm going to have to agree with Maxim on this one (regardless of their dudebro journalistic integrity). Let's face it; even the most progressive and "tolerant" parts of the U.S. still view porn and porn work in particular with a considerable amount of suspicion. Even if HR reps are whacking themselves silly to these students when they go home that doesn't mean they're going to come to work the next day and consider hiring any of them.

Just look at the response to the Belle Knox story a few weeks back. Of course little to no press on the obscene cost of her college tuition, just the assumed obscenity of a young female student choosing to do porn in order to pay for it. Heck, you could argue that some people do far worse in order to pay for college. I was in the military and it paid for all my tuition and housing after I left, and believe me, the porn industry possesses nowhere near the destructive force, no matter what any moral scold tries to tell you.

This is just the way our judgmental society works, so even though I can think of worse things people do at that age--attend ASU, for starters--it's just that most of our college-age fuckups aren't documented all over the web and shown on TV. The young students being preyed upon invariably aren't thinking far beyond graduation, if even beyond the end of semester. But they're of age and once they sigh the contract they're paid and that's it. No residuals and certainly no control over the material. Some contracts may be so insane that they could cover parts of the cosmos that haven't been discovered (you know, just in case).

I'm not saying it will haunt all of these young women until the day they die, put into one of those Futurama head jars, or whatever the future has in store for us. I'm just saying the Internet never forgets.

If you've even read just a few of my past posts then having to say anything further about how I view faith and religion is just redundant at this point, but I am very opinionated and make no apologies for that.

On the subject of Catholicism, I found this recent Washington Post article the other day about Pope Francis...and an exorcism conference being held at the Vatican. Yes, the one Time called "The People's Pope" and named their Person of the Year for 2013. And no, I'm not joking; an exorcism conference.

Seriously, beyond ruining a good hand towel, how is a little private time to yourself with nothing but your imagination and your genitals harmful? It's like your own one-person private confessional to think about your crazy fantasies and then clear your mind, and if that isn't allowed then religion truly is about policing thought crimes. Believe it or not, I had never heard of the lovely Asa Akira until the recent press she's gotten over her new memoir, Insatiable. (The watercolor cover even made me mistake her for Sasha Grey for a moment.)

I've never been much of a fan of porn star memoirs, or memoirs from 28-year-olds in general, so I have my biases. And in a Vice interview she warns, in regards to who she wrote the book for, that "I think the guys who like porn are either never going to jerk off to me again or jerk off to me forever after reading this book. I think more so the first one, but that is fine by me."

That interview also calls her the "Queen of Anal," which is probably as close to respecting a royal title as I'll ever come, but nothing I've read so far indicates this is a story of an abusive, horrifying career. In fact she claims to have enjoyed herself throughout the years--aside from the occasional grim hazards of vigorous porn work.

I would think the main problem, aside from the logistics of transferring an entire massive site's contents to a drive or drives, is the security problems. And at the same time I doubt they would want to make it too hard for a customer to access it--i.e., no two-man rule bullshit just to plug in the drive.

But maybe sites could make older material available for limited separate purchase, say ten years or more, as a single bulk drive for the more nostalgic smut lover (though it seems weird to think of 2003 as nostalgic).

Until something like Google Fiber speeds become the norm and, more importantly in my opinion, high speed Internet access gets treated like a true utility like water or power, FedExed hard drives will still move more data faster. That's why you need more than one address, badanday! I just wish I could have a separate mailbox for all the junk snail mail I still get (apparently junk mail is one of the revenue generators for the USPS)--then hook it up to a pneumatic tube and send all that crap into an incinerator.

I probably should be a little more careful about what I write--I don't mean because of any hidden Ron Paul-like controversy--but because I'm never really aware when my style and voice carries over, regardless of subject.

For example, I once commented on a professor's blog back in college. Much of the work of the class was done by posting writing assignments (privately, so only the professor could read them) online and the next time we had class I mentioned having checked out his blog and he had assumed I was one of the commenters on that entry just from recognizing my writing.

Maybe in the future everything posted online will be up for grabs, or at least political gaffes. The "fact checkers" will just plug in a speech or writing we know is a candidate's and then hunt down all the writings an algorithm determines are authored by the same person. All I can say for sure is thank the overlords of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro for watermarks--I would be lost trying to figure out where half the smut I watch originated! (I guess if it doesn't make you go blind, seeing all that pussy, tits, and ass can scramble your brain. )

The thing is those three magazines are practically anachronisms in the age of the web and digital everything. I don't have much desire for print porn, not even for bathroom reading or those interesting Playboy interviews. And I won't miss them, despite growing up in one of the last generations to have its The Treasure of Sierra Madre moment discovering an abandoned porn mag in the woods or an old building (there are a lot of these stories and they're always hilarious to me). I mean Playboy has become more of a clothing brand and logo to naive underage girls seemingly forgetful that it was founded by this guy.

Now, despite porn being "everywhere," who can or will honestly recognize any of the bigger names in Internet adult entertainment? It's one thing to know about Playboy or Hustler, but how many will publicly admit or even understand "Hell yeah, EverythingButt!"

You now have at least a site or two for basically every consensual taste or turn-on imaginable or practical, but conversely a greater curtain of silence around who's really into what anymore. I've seen a couple of lists of mainstream sites that should have their passwords changed if you have an account. It's good just to update your passwords from time to time anyway, plus making sure you never repeat them across multiple sites.

I don't use any password management myself; I guess it's like cloud storage, where I feel like there's is just too much separation between me and my info/data. I'm basically paranoid if I can't directly control my own passwords or access to them. And then you still ultimately need to remember the master password to unlock all the others. Sort of like how physicists haven't really come up with a practical way to start a fusion reaction without first starting a fission one.

I do use this site however to help me generate strong random passwords up to 128 characters long (I personally don't feel truly secure until my passwords reach into the triple digits ). You can also control if it includes symbols, uppercase, numbers, and similar characters. Of course I have to save all these generated passwords myself--plus their associated username, since I can't remember that most of the fucking time either!--and that's the catch for me since I know that's vulnerable as well.

The thing is you either have to save all your passwords somewhere yourself or use a manager since a password that is in anyway memorable is inherently vulnerable. Saw this article on Slate the other day, thought I'd share. If you don't have time to read the article, it basically boils down to how the vast majority of porn is catered and sold to straight men, including "lesbian" (more accurately girl-girl) material.

Not to sound too dismissive of this "pornography crisis" but I couldn't help laughing as I read. Not all performers are "Women with extra long fingernails and fried blonde hair looking bored while idly thumbing one another’s [privates]," like the author quotes one of her friends. Nor do they all have "vast, implanted chests" as another respondent complained.

Like I say for so many other issues my advice would be to watch more porn, as not all performers are blonde, bored, and buxom, if such things are ruining your fantasy (as they sometimes do for me). But it's not all bad, as one commenter noted, because despite all of its problems at least lesbian porn passes the Bechdel test.


PS: This thread and my sarcasm relating to the article's premise should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not trying to offend anyone just because they think porn should cater to more than one type of viewer, just glad to find something written about porn that's actually pretty lighthearted and reasonable for a change.

I agree, and I wasn't even talking about just porn sites so I should have expanded on my second sentence in that post. Yes, the web provides a huge range of opinions and views, but why actively seek out something that will challenge you and possibly result in you renouncing a belief or viewpoint?

Speaking for myself I don't seek out crazy right wing forums and sites (there are tons of them) but the left wing ones aren't much better (probably about the same number too). Much like you sentiment about PU, I hold for other sites: "I will be honest at times I think I do not fit in here." Because for every good article--well, a decent and halfway original one, at least--there is one spouting nonsense about the curative powers of some natural food or the latest snake oil, or the __ craziest/most untrue things __ said this week/month/year.

As an example I was reading an article about amalgam fillings in teeth--the mercury alloy that is controversial because of the known toxicity of the heavy metal--and the article went from somewhat rational and scientific to wooey bullshit fairly quickly. And then I read the comments; everyone asking about actual evidence, not unconfirmed anecdotes, get their shit handed to them. I was called a troll simply because I pointed out that amalgam isn't a chemical compound but an alloy, a basic distinction that should be understood before delving into the issue.

Thus I come back to PU just for the sanity and civility (okay, and the porn). Because even when liberal sites talk about porn it's mostly for the clicks, not any serious discussion of its pros and cons. I don't think Bonnie's tattoos are that universally loved; it's either accept 'em or leave 'em, because with that many they're hard to ignore. But again, spider-webbed nipples are not exactly what most tattooed American women have anyway. If anything she is the "trashy" stereotype that so many people would envision when they're criticizing tattoos--while of course making exceptions for the types of modifications they do to their bodies.

And there's plenty of tattoo criticism here on PU, though it's considerably more nuanced that what's discussed elsewhere on the web. So much of which boils down to "I don't like tattoos...blah, blah, blah...so just do as I say already!" I for one might not accept all tattoos as equally attractive--I'm still on the fence about the girl with the butthole tat--but I'm not about to go around dictating what people are allowed to do their own bodies. There's certainly a limited number of jobs where a woman of similar age and educational level can earn even $800/day.
