Hard drive disappeared.....with contents I have a C (main), E and F internal drives. When I cranked up the pc this AM, all contents and capacity figures for F were absent. When I click on F in My Computer, I eventually get a dialogue window telling my that F needs to be formatted, and "click here" if OK. Have I lost all contents forever? I did defrag F last night (along with the others). Did that cause this?

Defrag programs are supposed to maintain the health/efficiency of your hard drives. They are not supposed to make the hard drive contents disappear. So the problem of your missing F drive contents was caused by something else. Do not reformat your F drive. If you do, you will definitely erase any files that might have been on it before the reformat. (I'm talking in general terms, because computer forensic experts are supposed to be able to find files even after a reformat.) Maybe some computer guru here can suggest what are possible reasons your F drive is giving you problems. It could be something as simple as hard drive failure, or a loose wire or something similar. A virus or malware seems unlikely, because most malware is used to gain some advantage for the hacker beyond simple erasure of computer files on the target PC. If you can't get any useful hints here, maybe you can try some PC sites that offer general help on PC problems. There are some good sites for this kind of help, but it's been years since I personally followed any of them. So I can't suggest any sites that might be really helpful.

I had a computer where certain drives would seemingly disappear when I turned it on or rebooted. I would use the "restore point" tool to solve the problem. If I knew when the drive was visible, I would just pick that point, the computer would do its "restore" and lo and behold, the drive was then accessible.

Have you thought of putting it into safe mode? I'd troll around there for a while and see if something comes up. Also, Like panther said, going back to a restore point is a good idea. That's worked for me when nothing else would. if the computer won't boot normally, you can oftentimes boot successfully through safe-mode.

There are probably some folk here who may be able to help. http://majorgeeks.com/ Ask in their forum. It is where I always go when I have a 'puter problem. Cap'n. First open a command prompt and type: chkdsk f: /f If that doesn't get the drive contents back, download the software from this site and give it a try: http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ If neither of those work, then you will likely have to decide for yourself how much the data is worth to you to go through a professional data recovery service.

I once had a computer with a bunch of drives that dissappeared because my PCI IDE/ATA controller died. However, the symptoms don't quite match yours. If you connect other stuff to the port that drive is on, and tehy work then this probably isn't the problem. Nonetheless I would probably check the cables, try putting the drive on a different SATA or ATA port if available. Probably wont help, but worth a shot. Unfortunately drives fail, and in my experience don't give you much of a warning. Hard to believe defragging would have caused the problem, although it does force the drive to read/write for an extended period of time, so perhaps it was the straw that broke the camel's back. I believe defragging can cause the loss of some restore points, or at least it used to cause that problem. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars. Brandt: Ah hahahahaha! Before you take any drastic steps, I would recommend looking through a bunch of forums to see if anyone else has had a situation like yours. I did a Google search and found quite a few things you might want to try before you give up the drive as lost. Capn's suggestion of posting on MajorGeeks is a good idea. I also post problems on www.computing.net Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Solution is simple, you need to run a recovery. If you reformat the drive it actually is not a big deal so do not worry if you freaked out and did, so long as it is not a long wiping format. However do NOT write anything onto it. That would write over old data and make recovery extremely difficult. I have used File Scavenger many times with good success, even a few days ago actually. Likely what happened is the MBR corrupted, the place that records were stuff is. You will need a drive larger than the one you lost, or at least that can hold more data than what was on the drive at the time. A 500 GB drive may turn up 600 GB because it can find deleted stuff and fragments if you moved stuff around on it. Do not recover onto the troubled drive though, the recovery process will overwrite data as you go, so you need another physical drive. Once you are done you can reformat the drive and continue using it. So there you you have it. That's not necessarily so. What if the cause isn't drive related? Motherboard issues could be at fault. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Computers are great when they are working but can be a stressful nightmare when something goes wrong, especially if you haven't done a backup. My PC last week blew up (well turned on and then off again and wouldn't turn on after that, think its the PSU that' gone) Yeah hard drives are a big headache too though they don't seem to last very long these days, maybe they are too big for their boots and can't handle so much data. I had another go out on my a couple of weeks ago which was a backup drive and started taking hours to backup a few lousy files, ran a long disk scan and no faults when there clearly was. Yeah I'd try the Scavenger program as I've heard that is good but I've never used it before or try disk recovery software free in google and see what comes up. If that were the case the drive would likely not show up at all, even during post. However, I, personally, would not completely dismiss RB's thoughts because they frequently hold merit. To test simply switch the data cables with a working drive. If the suspect drive shows up than the controller could have an issue, or the cable itself. Controller issues certainly can cause a drive to appear unformatted but it would likely take out the other drives as well, which is why I do not believe the controller is the issue. Another thought is to unplug the cable, with computer off, then plug back in and restart. Replug and restart fixes many issues, but do not put much stock into it on this one. I recommend giving those a try because it costs nothing and carries little risk. Beyond that a recovery program should be the next step. Obviously there is no guarantee, but I am reasonably certain on this issue because I have observed the exact set of symptoms on my system a few times and recovery was the required action.
