Download speed - general

Have had this ok deal with a download speed: 6/1 Mbit for quite some years....
Then changed provider for other reasons and bought a 40/4 Mbit at of course a considerable higher price.
And I thought: wow,now everything is going really fast when downloading all that good porn (and other stuff)...

But no - at most sites it's not much faster - and then I thought about an input here - as I remember it was from The Drooler - which stated that your speed of download also depends on what the site offers.
And oh, yes - for the sites joined lately the download speed has NOT increased much.
So if your main deal is downloading from paysites - like most here, I guess - what's the point in paying more monthly for higher speed to your internet provider???
Not very technical here - and a bit: "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

I increased my download limits from 150-160 KB/s to about 620-630 KB/s a few months back. That was a very nice upgrade for me.

But if you're complaining that you don't get the full benefit of your 40/4 Mbit download service because the paysites don't support the ultra-fast download speeds that your ISP allows, it sounds like you are a little cranky to me.

Surely we have better things to complain about?

You can always send your excess download speed capability to my account, if we get one of the tech-savy PU members to let me tap into your ISP account.

But I don't even know what the 40/4 Mbit means.

I'm guessing 6/1 MBit means 6 Mbit/second, which would be about 732 KB/s.

But what does 40/4 Mbit refer to? Surely not 40 Mbit per 4 seconds.

I may be cranky - but also uncertain about the whole download-speed thing...That's the REASON for this thread...
But I think that 6/1 MBit means 6 Mbit/second download and 1 Mbit upload - at least it's stated that way by this users provider. And your mention of about 732 KB/s seems right - but after getting that 40 Mbit download - but I don't know if that means - guess it should be a 40 Mbit download speed and a 4 Mbit upload speed...
Still: this could be the place to get better knowledge... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

Look at it from the other side.

To provide 40mbit service to you, suppose the website has 100 people currently downloading from the site one evening, that would mean they must pay for a dedicated 4gbit bandwidth, which is not cheap in the least.

Brazzers.com is estimated to be accessed by ~15 million people worldwide *every* *day*. Though keep in mind that is *not* subscribers, just people who hit their website in some way.

Bandwidth is a shared resource, and porn takes up a helluva lot of it!

From one non-techie to another, it was explained to me this way:

You are pretty much right that the speed of any download is limited by the slowest part of the deal. So if a site limits you to a speed much slower than what you are capable of (which makes sense since they have a lot of downloaders at once) they determine the download speed. So what's the advantage to you? If you have the extra capacity then you can download at the maximum site speed while other things are going on on your end. If your wife or kids are surfing the net on another computer then that won't limit your speeds.

From another non-techie, be thankful you don't live in Canada. The Canadian PU members have mentioned that their ISPs (Internet Service Providers) limit their monthly downloads to X GB per month. Any downloads above that limit are charged at a very high rate. I'm guessing you could reach that limit in 1 or 2 days, with your 40 Mbit speed. So you would either have to severely limit your Internet cruising, or face a horrendously expensive ISP bill.

I live in the US, have never had a problem with any monthly download limits. So it seems each geographic region has its own foibles, including the behavior of the local ISPs.

I have very rarely encountered a site that exceeds 10 Mbps, for now I would say investing in a connection higher than that strictly for porn is probably a waste of money. It is nice for services that can handle the bandwidth (Netflix, xbox-live, etc.), but not so useful for porn. Your download speed is dependent on many things aside from just the site's limitations, and I have only rarely achieved my so-called "maximum" download speed even from non-porn sites.

In response to lk2's comment, I wouldn't be surprised if some US isps started instituting quotas, if they haven't already. Also, congrats on going hardcore. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I have a 100 mbit connection and have found that very few sites can supply my grot at speeds anywhere near that. There are a few tricks you can use to get more out of it. Some sites limit the speed per connection so you may find that a single file will only download at say 500kb/s no matter how fast you are cappable of downloading. In those cases, use a download manager or download multiple files at the same time. Then you will run into the problem of sites limiting the number of connections as well so you will find you can download only 2 files each at only 500kb/s leaving a quarter of your bandwidth unused. There is not much you can do except download multiple files from multiple sites at the same time. Last option is choose your sites carefully, read the reviews and join only sites that are capable of suppling your need for speed The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

It's the same in the UK, most ISPs impose a monthly cap on the amount you can download, though a few apply that cap to certain times of the day, so downloads between midnight and 8am don't count towards your download limit, in which case faster download speeds are a benefit.

I'm on a wireless system where I have no control of the throughput and actually have no idea of what the speed it. I can only gauge it by the fact that I can play WOW without any difficulty. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

jberry, there are many sites you can use to check your bandwidth, although if it will probably vary significantly with time of day. I have found them to be pretty accurate with my supposed "max". Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Not so much to add - except thanks to slutty, anyonebutme, rearadmiral, BadMrFrosty and pinkerton for the inputs/help - which leaves me to this conclusion:
"If your're only (or primarily) in it for the porn downloads, no need to pay more for an extremely fast connection - just settle for the average - and less expensive".

I was somewhat inactive with downloads recently, but some time ago the answer in such cases was "get download accelerator and enjoy it on those sites which support it". IDM is the one which I'm still using and quite happy with it.

Take a look at your favorite site in TBP review - they usually show download speeds they've observed without download accelerator and with accelerator - the difference can be HUGE. Motto: "All niches except for boring one!"

You know slutty, I even had one in my bookmarks - my second bookmark position. http://www.speedtest.net/ 19.50MBPS but I'm not sure how that stacks up.

though it does say -

"Connection Grade What's This
What is this?

Based on the currently displayed results, connection grades show how you stack up with others in your country and around the world. For example if your value is 77% (giving you a B+) then only 23% of connections are faster than yours. The scale is:

A = 80-100%
B = 60-79%
C = 40-59%
D = 20-39%
F = 0-19%

Plus/minus grades are given for the top/bottom 5% of each grade.

* National GradeB+ (78%)
* Global GradeA (85%)"

but that is just from my computer to my provider less than 50 miles.

Between NOLA & LACA four tests went from 7 mbps & 13.5 mbps.

Between NOLA & St. Peterburg, Russia 5.27 mbps.

And since I've considered becoming an ex-pat, 4.33 mbps between NOLA & Ecuador (did you know that the avg temp year on the equator in Ecuador is 60 degrees F?) If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

Listen up!

You download speed sucks because you are not using it right! You need to use multiple connections. For example, videobox would give me about 5-10 MBit/s using a single connection, but when using multiple i was getting 60 MBit/s and this was 4 years ago.

You really need to be using a download manager now. Most have the ability to download many files at once, thus increasing overall speed greatly. They also can download a single file as multiple pieces, achieving the same thing.

Many sites can use up most of your connection, you just need to give them enough lanes to drive on. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

badandy, I never got better than 10 Mbps (total) on videobox when I was a member there recently, and that was using download managers. I used to always get fantastic downloads there in the past, particularly when downloading from different locations, but this seems to have changed.

I use download managers almost exclusively, and have rarely even come close to maxing out my connection. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

I hardly ever have issues. VB was not the fastest site but it was up there. I currently have a 15 Mbps and would max out for days on end. Could be something in the path. I have not been where I got my fastest connection in a while to download so I can not truly tell you if they have started any sort of throttling, but I would not think that they had.

I had a particular site sustain 90 Mbps for the duration of downloading their entire site. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

Blimey 90 MBps that's unreal woh, seems like we are living in the stone age of internet speed here in the UK.

What download manager do you recommend, I tried one in the past and don't know if I did something wrong but I couldn't get it to work on the site I was a member of so I tried another DM and same thing, I then gave up. Probably. And some people have better things to do than take cheap shots ...

Whereas some are quite in the habit of it. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I have been using Internet Download Manager, IDM, for several years with good luck. It so happens that the review staff here use it was well, so that makes their reviews even more useful. There are other good managers out there as well.

There are periodic sites that do not work. Sometimes if your are creative you can get it to work on sites it otherwise would not.

I must also agree with Drooler. Some sites have more important things to address than download speed, but it is still important none the less. Not many people host their own stuff anymore, so the excuses for slow speeds are not very convincing. If I were to make a site I would be paying someone else with a server farm and direct internet access to host it for me. When sites are slow for everyone it is because they are being cheap and not paying for enough bandwidth. Because one person decides to stay on the low end does not mean it is not important to those of us who pay for high end. I have used IDM as well. It downloads very fast, but the downside is that it takes a while to put the streams back together into one file. I much prefer downthemall from firefox.
