The real answer for me is not available; it varies depending on the content and volume of that content.
I always sign up for one month and will cancel a few days in. If I like the site I will re-up either for another month, or if it's a truly exceptional site (21sextury, for example) for a longer term.

I chatted with someone about this and he raised an interesting point. Until recently portrayals of human waste elimination were considered totally verboten almost as much as underage porn.
Fisting became OK, then peeing, then scat.
